Hopes for the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Grand Prix Legends

Fans hoped the old 22 km Nürburgring Nordschleife would make it into Papyrus's upcoming Grand Prix Legends, with some saying they would buy the game for that track alone; one poster said Spa rather than the Ring was the unconfirmed track. Discussion covered the number of corners, Jim Clark's 1967 pole time, Bellof's lap record, the Derek Bell 'In Car 956' video, and how to drive the Nordschleife in a road car on public days.

As far as I know the Nurburgring is not one of the confirmed tracks and Papy is still working to get the licensing deal done. I would really miss the ring if it would not be in the game. Am I the only one who feels so?

I doubt the marjority of people here know what Nurburgring is ... but alas, we have SpeedWorld where I live ! <grin> Doug p.s. I too hope it does have that track for the historic value and for the pure fun of it

Actually, It is Spa-Forcanchamps, and not the Nurburgring, that is presently not confirmed into the game. And they also decided to bring us others tracks that were not in the 1967 F1 Season, with 2tracks in France (Pau and Rouen I think) and also Brand's Hatch (who had a special F1 competition that year). But still, it will be the reference in Simracing titles when it comes out. I have that special feeling that I had when I saw pics of Nascar1 for the first time :-) Fran?ois Mnard, ymenard on NROS Team driver, Zombie Entreprise Sponsored by http://www.awpss.com/ May the downforce be with you, always... Certainly not! I would be greatly disappointed if the "Nordschleife" (the *real* Nuerburgring; the 20 kilometers track, not the modern GP track) was missing from the sim. I too would buy the game even if it only had the old, looooong version of Nurburgring. It's a real classic and it would probably take ages just to get good on this one track. Karl
For those you who's interrested, Jim Clark's 1967 pole-posistion time on the 22835 meter long track was 8min 4,1sec. (avg. speed 169,8 km/h) Achived in the 3.0 V8 Ford Cosworth DFV powered Lotus 49. Now... if we compare this to the outright track record by Derek Bell and/or Stefan Bellof during the Nurburigring 1000 km race for Gr. C cars in 1985... They (i.e. one of them) managed to "drag" the turbo powered Porsche 956 around the circuit in 6min. 25,91sec. Thats an average speed of 194,33 km/h !!!! Now when you remember that the track has 178 corners - that's bloddy fast!! Edwin Solheim, Norway http//:home.sol.no/~solhmrek "Early on, the cars were getting faster and faster. I seem to remember that there was a charge of 20DM per lap? In 1985 it was a shorter track. They could not use the original start/finish section because of the new track being built at that time. But nevertheless Stefan Bellofs ride was very impressive and can be compared with Jo Sifferts pole with the Porsche 908/3 in 1000 KM sportscar race in 1970. (A 7.43 when Im right which was faster than the Formula 1 in these days!) The Nrburgring is a must for GPL. It was the most well-known track in these as. Im rather curious how Papy will manage to create such a long track! Klaus H?rbrand

Yes, you can drive on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife with your normal car, but only on certain days, because: a) there are still races, mostly endurance but in 98 also one race for the STW cup befor the 24h race. b) the track is used for testing of new cars by many car manufacturers. For more information go to http://www.nuerburgring.com (Sorry, only in German) Go to 'Angebote' -> 'Selbsterfahren am Ring-"Bammel statt Bummel" ' and you can find the days; at the moment only for 97, but I think the will have changed it when you come to Germany. You can also take a ride with a real racing driver around the ring in a BMW. Holger Reinhardt

I got the info from Nurburgring's official site. Anyway, if I'm not wrong - in the film "In car 956" Derek Bell lap the long "Ring" in 6,25 min. - bracket during the practice/qualifying for the 1983 1000km race. (that run was according to Bell himself the sixth fastest time ever (well uptil then anyway). The really awsome part about Bell "in car camera" lap is that he's being passed by Jacky Icxx (who is on a qual run) sort of halfway thru the lap, and he is _really_ flying !!! I imagine the time Icxx clocked on the run is _the_ fastest lap around the Ring ever - allthough is't not an "official" record. When you crashed you had to run to your bike and if you pressed the "B" button you were running faster :) 2) Road Rash. PC (1994?) If I remember Papyrus went into the creation of this game. I think it's still possible, and I also think your idea about the cost is approximately correct. Be aware that no insurance is included in the fee, though... Sometimes, there are still races on the Nordschleife (touring cars, mainly, and vintage cars). On those occasions, the track is not open to the public, obviously. ^^^^^^ truly insular mentality, or is it? :) When going from Spa to Switzerland, you almost have to go by the Nuerburgring. I'd recommend visiting it in any case. They have a nice little museum, too. If you have the chance to drive on the track, be warned - it looks in many places just like a harmless country road, but it isn't. Guilty! I had a German housemate last year at Uni, and he found it very amusing that we still talk about going to Europe or "the Continent". Its totally inbred, I'm afraid. In my experience we have enough problems thinking of ourselves are British as opposed to English, Scottish, etc... That's the kind of thing I'd expect. I certainly have no intention of driving it really fast (although my opinions might change once I've been driving on autobahns for a couple of days!). I wasn't going really fast either, back then. But I also was a stupid kid, and had had my license for just three months. The official speed limit is 100 km/h, I was going approximately 140 through the "Fuchsroehre" (a straight which goes downhill for a few hundred meters, and steeply uphill afterwards.) I wanted to feel a bit of the famed "compression" at the lowest point. Afterwards, I did everything wrong: lifted in the turn, the car became loose, I was too surprized to even brake, let alone counter-steer. The nose of the car turned towards the inside of the turn, we went rectangular to the track and hit the inside planks with a relative velocity of no more than, say, 20 km/h, while still going 80 in the "right" direction. The car left some components of the front bumper and headlights at the barrier, gently did a 270 degree turn and finally stopped properly parked at the righthand side of the track. I had much luck, though: 50 meters further on, there was a work crew repairing the planks where some bozo had hit the wall... Imagine what could have happened if I had hit them. The Nordschleife is like the Mafia - if you don't show "respect," you'll have to pay for it. :) -- Wolfgang Preiss \ E-mail copies of replies to this posting are welcome. wopr"at"stud.uni-sb.de \ There is no "2" in my real e-mail address. (Hope my boss doesn't find out cause it is a company car). It was very very entertaining. The price was 17 DM per lap. /Magnus

Why would the Nurburgring be too large? Are you reffering to the sheer length of the circuit as a sim problem or our problems learning such a challenging circuit? I cannot wait to get my teeth into it! There are very long stages in Network Q RAC Rally, not the same thing but close, so the only difficulty is accurately recreating the circuit. The other GPL circuit I really want to try is the full length Spa: just over 8 miles with the fearsome Masta kink. If GPL is any good it will be worth a full system overhaul.
