GP2: With P II 300

I read a note asking if GP2 will run on a P II 300. While it is TRUE that the install program does NOT see the processor, it reports none, it does run the install and does run the game. In high res mode, with full frames per second selected it runs very smoothly. JEB "OZ"

Oh yes, GP2 works with PII 300 and it works great (21 to 25 fps if I remember, al options turned on at 640x480). I did not have any problem with the install. Bye! Martin Simard

I beg to differ. I have a P2 300 here with 64Mb Ram and a Mistique video card and with all the options switched on and full detail (with the frames rate set at 30) it runs at about 130% occupancy (not bad) but anytime something happens (ie. smoke, spin or just other cars) the occupancy climbs up to 200%+. And I am not mentioning replays either. To me this means that a P2 300 is not enough to run it smoothly. Smoothly is when I get flamles (or close to it) framerate most of the time. So I suggest you wait for P2 600 or someone who can rewrite (not optimize... that's a lost cause) the code to run more efficiently. Such a shame, I would love to play this at 30fps... as all sims should. David Mocnay

If only Geoff Crammond had not programmed the "o" key in GP2, you'd have one less thing to worry about. Jack Russell

Is your Mystique an AGP card? I just got a Dell P2 300 with the STB Velocity 128 AGP. I've tried swapping the video board out for a PCI Hercules Stingray 128/3D (PCI/Voodoo rush) just to see what effect it had. Wow. 3DFX came off looking bad, but I suspect that its more the AGP than anything else. With the AGP board plugged in running Direct3D, I can actually run full-field races in CART Precision Racing with everything turned on at 23-30 fps depending upon traffic. GP2 ran very quickly as well, though I haven't done a lot of testing on the starting grid to see what happens there. Randy

I have the same model of Dell and STB AGP as yours, and added a Canopus Pure 3dfx to get the best of both worlds. As far as framerates go the 2 cards are dead even!

David, I cannot understand why you are finding this. I have a Dell PII 266 with 4Mb Millennium and 64Mb RAM. GP2 runs at between 85 & 100% processor occupancy with everything on in SVGA mode. I've seen the odd peak at 124 for a fleeting instant whilst ploughing through a gravel trap trying to test your assertions but otherwise would say the 266 handles GP2 without a bother. Therefore, one would assume your PII 300 should cruise comfortably. However, there may be another factor (culprit) namely the Mystique. Any chance the difference is down to the abilities of the Mystique vv Millennium? I don't know (as I've no Mystique to test with) just suggesting a possible cause. Say, are you the same "OZ" who claimed when GP2 was released, that it ran smooth as butter with all details on in hires mode on your Pent 200? Guess your still eating that Mexican grass in your enchiladas cuz even on a PII 300 it still runs like crap! Go buy UBI's F1 with 3dfx support and see what a great framerate you get with all details on and with all 21 cars on the track!!!!!! Cya, C

I'm using a PII 266mhz and at first thought GP2 wouldn't run, because I had seen the concerns here, and I tried to run it and it locked up. I just restored my previous version from a tape backup, and realized that my sound settings were different because I re-installed Win95, so I did setup again, and works fine. Still can't turn EVERYthing on, but far better than my P5-200!! >David, >I cannot understand why you are finding this. I have a Dell PII 266 with 4Mb >Millennium and 64Mb RAM. You don't need the "o" key to notice the slowdowns. If only Geoff Crammond wrote a dynamic 3d engine that plays in real time and not his "dinamic" time :) David Mocnay

Yup, same guy, same story. On this P II 300, it does, indeed, run very smoothly with full detail on...go figure. BTW, I still have the PPro 200 on the other table and it still runs GP2, with the detail lowered as was noted at the time, very smoothly too, cuz we waz just racing it serial .....go figure II.....
