Notable threadFlame warInsideSimRacing video preview of iRacing

Tony Rickard linked a 16-minute InsideSimRacing video explaining how iRacing would work. Andrew MacPherson and Schooner doubted the business model, pricing and lack of offline or league options, while beta testers Larry and Uwe Schürkamp said field sizes depended on skill-level splits and that yellow flags and pit stops were not yet implemented. An anonymous poster's questions about grid sizes sparked accusations that he was David G Fisher, and abuse followed.

At the moment my personal jury is still out on this whole project. I want to be wrong though, so good luck to everyone involved. Andrew McP
And people complain about the fees for Xbox live and DLC, iRacing is many times more with a $20 a month fee and $15-20+ for each car and track. I suspect this is all meant to keep most people out by design. That combined with the forced series and licensing, cockpit view only, no league supports, limited paint schemes, etc. Very regimented and expensive IMHO for most. Be interesting to see how it goes... "Andrew MacPherson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Thanks for the link Tony. It explains a lot. As someone who once paid $2/hour to pretend fly WW2 fighters the monthly fee does not look particularly steep and it is more or less in line with the industry standard fees for most online worlds. From the video it seems pretty clear to me that the online world is the main feature once you get past the basics of track & car. It looks to relieve all the admin functions of running a league (plus many other features like ranking) and allow the participants to focus on the racing. That relief alone makes the monthly fee worth it for me. The initial content does seem a little thin. I would have been happier if they'd included a Formula Ford as well as the Solistice ( a little GM sponsorship there?) and the Legends car. Tracks look Ok and its a decent starter pack for what purports to be a serious sim. Hopefully IRacing will get the numbers they need to generate full quality fields at any level I might be interested in racing Dave E "Tony R" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:N2Z1k.118567$[email hidden]...

If it isn't in the basic package, you can't race it anyway. You have to EARN your way to those faster cars. When you get to that point you can acquire the car and race it all you want :) -Larry "Andrew MacPherson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

From the video: "Since iRacing is located in Boston, let's start off at the South Boston track." By that logic, since I live in St. Petersburg, FL, I guess I would start in Russia? :) (For those that don't know, South Boston Speedway is in Virginia.)

The Red Sox was a passion but astutely managed to become self sustaining in terms of generating income to take on the Yankees and then through the use of sabermetrics (a system he devised for mining baseball stats to find undervalued players while avoiding long contracts for aging stars) ensuring the income was used most efficiently. This turned around success within 2 years winning the world series in 2004 for the first time since 1918. Sim racing maybe a passion for Henry but I am sure the vision is for it to become a viable proposition so it can continue to be developed through self funding rather than ongoing investment. What kind of numbers online Larry? Will it support 50+ 60+ ?? drivers in a race? Has that been tested? What's the highest number you have been online with? Thanks in advance ==--== "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:hYk2k.4099$[email hidden]...

Larry - Can you confirm that yellow flags and pit stops have not yet been implemented? Think I seen that on the RSC forum and was just curious if it were true and what other big items are still missing. Thanks. "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:hYk2k.4099$[email hidden]...

Off topic here, but John Henry didn't devise sabermetrics. Bill James (who now works for/in collaboration with JH) is the one who came up with the idea. I owned a lot of books by Bill James as stats were the life blood of the APBA baseball league (a card and dice game based on actual stats) that I was in each summer as soon as school ended.
As a follow up to my own post, I suppose the Bill James himself isn't even the one who "invented" it. He is just the biggest "name" associated with it.

Logically, it shouldn't be too difficult to deal with a brief loss in communication with the server as far as the server software been able to realise that that would be what has just happened - if the server queries the player's position and no reply comes back then the server must assume a connection problem whilst guessing at player's location on the track. If player then re-appears at different position then don't punish player for this as it was a connection issue. As an addition to this, do you know where players have been connecting from, so far. Have there been players from all over the globe, or just the USA?

Thanks. And smaller fields based on your previous posts I see as well. Again I think I will take a wait and see approach, seems to be a lot missing from what other sims offer, some things added, some things removed or not implemented yet. Kind of feels like the next phase is a paid beta until they get things a bit more finished. "Uwe Schrkamp" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:484cf2c3$[email hidden]...

Heck...I hate to have to answer my own question.... but it seems like no-one else will !?! Strange me thinks >> Hasn't really been a concern so far. -Larry << Nice "cover answer" Larry, but is that it? Can you or anyone actually answer the other questions posted here? Of course in the same way, iRacing "hasn't really been a concern for me either" as I haven't and probably won't pay for it. I'm also a bit appalled with the "marketing strategy" er, um, I mean "special offers" (do I have 10 yet?) that are being paraded around and MASCARADED as it they are actually some sort of "special offer". ~allowing me to join and pay~ is NOT a "special offer". A FREE TRIAL - well that might be a special offer. 2 for 1 - I think that is a special offer... but sign up now and pay forever.... so that someone else can pay later (get everything up to that point for the entrance fee) and then pay forever? Seems a little inequitable to me. Or will people that join in say a year from now... will they have to pay $500+ "initiation" to get the updates and features that are available at that time? Personally, I smell a bad concepted business model and a WORSE smelling marketing "special offer" campaign. Excuse me.... the stink makes me want to leave the forum for a moment. I'm afraid it's more complicated than that, but when the beta started we had close to 100 online at one time. Bear in mind, those signed into the race were broken up into like skill levels on their own servers. I believe we had around 20 in mine. It's not due to bandwidth. It's due to racers being grouped into like skill level's. The system is far more complicated than a single question like "How many can race at once" -Larry "<==-==>" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:lZ93k.16038$js6.1003@pd7urf1no...

Boy, you really seem to be mis-reading things. I know nothing about special offers. There is no break if you get an invite. You are simply being afforded the opportunity to be one of the early signers. Nothing more, nothing less. If you want one, fine. If not, that's fine too. No one is masquarading anything around here. As far as the warp, what I said is what I mean. Since a certain period in the beta, I have witness zero warp issues. Some may have, I'm just indicating what _I_ have witnessed. That is correct. Yellows and pitting have not been implemented yet. iRacing is a growing animal that will probably never really be 'finished' :) -Larry "schooner" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:88t2k.98$L03.55@edtnps92... > Larry - Can you confirm that yellow flags and pit stops have not yet been > implemented? Just to re-iterate, field size is not a simple thing to figure out. It is based on driver skill levels and the number of people signed up for a race. I have been in races with upwards of 20 people and have had no issues. -Larry "schooner" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:MB63k.373$sg6.334@edtnps91...

The lower series (which they all are right now) have smaller fields (and shorter races in some cases). The top-tiers will be full tracks. :)

It looks to me like a lot of folks are reading things into this that just are not there....:-). Like you have already said, it isn't going to be for everyone. To me, it looks interesting and I would like to give it a go. I did some club racing in the 60s and when it got too expensive I quit......:-). Yea, I am that old.....:-). I don't know if I will get an early invite or not, and don't know how long I will stay in it if I do but it is an interesting concept. I just have DSL at about 7-800k and may or may not have issues. I do fine on other online sims like GTR2 etc. I got tired of wreckfests and haven't done any online racing for a long time. I like aggressive racing, but not crazy racing. There is a difference. I like online races that I can drive as if I were driving my own vehicle.......:-). That seems to be the kind of business model that iRacing is using. Ed

Zero facts. Or should one assume a "full track" is 14 drivers (see above)? iRacing must be very complicated if no-one can, or will, admit to the MAXIMUM NUMBER of drivers online at once. I think you're being a bit dim. 12 to 14 closely matched cars and drivers is plenty to race against. Some of the beta testers have stated that they've raced with big grids. I think the number 30 was mentioned. This sounds just like the kind of stuff David G Fisher used to come out with when GPL first arrived. Here's a reminder from ten years hence:

Whatever.... I race in a league now with 50 cars on track at once. I race in another league with 34 cars on grid (limited to that only for "historical" reasons GP'79) 12 is seriously NOT enough. I would quit a league that only had 12 competitors per race. 30? I may have missed that - I apologize if I did. 30 seems closer to what I would hope for.... but still a long way from anything NEW or GROUND-BREAKING. For Jolly Roger, or whatever moniker you are using today ---- I have told you already that I am not this David Fischer that you seem to have an unnatural attachment to. If you feel better or somehow self-satisfied by beleiving that I am, go ahead and do so. It doesn't change the fact that I am not that person, nor does it change my opinions, and finally it does not change my impression that you are just a loud-mouthed, cocky (probably with NOTHING to back it up) little mouthpiece with a lack of repect for anyone else and of little or no value to this world. -==- "Roger Longcock" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:80i3k.21606$[email hidden]...

Thanks Larry. I'm just looking for DETAILS and INFORMATION. Sorry... perhaps I mis-used the "special offer" term. I only used that term becuase I have recieved so many emails that contained the term "special offer". I will assume that it is co-incidence and nothing more. Again, thank you for any answers you provide(d). I am NOT intentiaonally "bashing" the product - how could I? I don't even have it. I have been asking questions so that I can make a more informed decision - that's all. It's too bad that the questions have touched such soft spots. Sorry tiny, but you are wrong. BTW, I was one of a very, very small group who were chosen to beta test VROC by one of it's main developers. That same developer gave me beta testing duties when he moved on to another company afterwards. Think about that for a moment. Feeling as stupid as your nickname?

That's only a limitation of racing in the rookie classes, I believe. I've read of larger "fun" events being run on the forums, but never mamaged to participate in one because of the silly time zone differences, so I cannot really comment on how many were able to race without problems. I'm certain that the fixed maximum number of drivers per race in the rookie classes is not of a technical nature, but a regulatory one chosen by iRacing to put a limit on the number or crashes and incidents that can occur (less cars == less chance of big pile-ups). Hahaha, your <====> header has now been compared with an email you sent, so we know it's you, Dave. Now you won't be able to post anonymously from your usual email client. You're have to go a create another web base account, like you did for this post. Like you weren't going to attack iRacing on behalf of you r2r master on this front! You lose, you loser. HAHAHAHAHAH LOL! We are legion PS, Thanks for coming out and denying it so quickly. That remove any element of doubt from our minds that it was you. <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... On Jun 9, 6:20 pm, "Roger Longcock" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Sorry tiny, but you are wrong. BTW, I was one of a very, very small group who were chosen to beta test VROC by one of it's main developers. That same developer gave me beta testing duties when he moved on to another company afterwards. Think about that for a moment. Feeling as stupid as your nickname?

Now you've resorted to complete and total lies about e-mails/headers. Pathetic.
Thanks Uwe Yes, that is what I interpreted from your message already - not a tech issue but a manement issue - I did get that. That's fine with me.... however I would still like to get an idea of "potential full grid" numbers'' iRacing does oval racing and there is likely to be a lim it to how many possible drivers. Don't know if iRacing will ever do Endurance type races or not..... but I am only wondering (a loud) how many "potential" drivers could be hosted in say a simulated Le Mans style race. Again thanks Uwe *-* -*-*-*- for anyone that thinks otherwise ---- I am not bashing or complaining or trying to be disparaging..... I am only trying to get the answer to the question "Will iRacing be able to host MORE THAN (or equal to) 50 drivers at a time." If you question my motivation that is fine. There appears to be some limits within rFactor that seems to create problems when you have OVER 50 drivers at once. Don't know if the problem is code; bandwidth; server (hardware) limits; or otherwise. But the "wall" is still there. I am curious as to whether iRacing has managed to overcome this wall. End of story. -==- I am really just wanting to know how many drivers "could" be racing online "Uwe Schrkamp" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:484e5d04$[email hidden]...

Most of the new intake of beta testers (like me) just won't know as we are running in relatively small fields which form the Rookie series. Some of the longer term guys may have done some test races in the past? For road racing (my preference) grids of that size sound more like a commuting run simulation :) I just don't think possibly anyone on here knows rather than being coy. Cheers Tony

Hi David Sorry to have somehow? gotten you involved in this. Apparently you have a stalker!? He CANNOT read email headers obviously - but that does not seem to stop his claims of knowledge - LOL A few laughs at him initially... but then it just plain gets stupid and boring... he doesn't know what the hell he is talking about nor what he is claiming. He's nothing but a loud-mouthed little shitwad. I suggest you plonk and/or otherwise ignore him as "feeding" the brainless twat only makes him hang around more. Again, apologies that the mindless reject focused his limited attention to you.... but you can imagine that I never would have expected that or saw it coming. Perhaps we (you and I) could offer to drop by the losers home and let him see we are not one and the same... but of course that won't happen as this "type" is most often nothing but a wannabe person - not worth thinking about - and certainly not going to step up to another man. He is probably a huge coward and that is why he enjoys this "safe way" of insulting, provoking and otherwise annoying people.
