F1RS terrible slowdown in races

What a terrible shame, the game looks and plays great, that is until you race with other cars when the framerate becomes awfull when cars bunch up in slow corners, and the car becomes impossible to drive. I have an Intel P166 32MB RAM and a 3Dfx card so I don't see why there should be a problem. UBI have gone to a lot of trouble to make the game realistic, and then ruined it by making it ***when racing.

This is so disappointing to hear. Why cant there be a racing sim that doesn't ***everytime you want to race against a full filed of AI. I can't believe that after all these years, no other company can give a game as good as AI as Papy and Crammond's GP2 have had. GP2 was a system hog in SVGA but I liked the driving model and the AI was darn good IMHO. ICR2 had good AI and a great framerate with a rendition card. What the hell is wrong with the current crop of racing sims? Is the limitations of the video cards or is it, poor programming and rushing the games out the door before they are finished like with CPR? I hope Ubi does not ***like MS has with CPR. Kas
<snip> There is one word that answers your question......Win95. Without true pre-emptive multi-threaded multi-tasking the AI calculations just take too much CPU time. Eventually I suppose they will come up with some thing like a DOS extender that will let things run. Or CPU's will get enough horsepower to handle it. Win95 is just too much stuff piled on a single-task design. My Opinion, Ralph Williams

At my system (200 MMX) there is only a small drop in framerate in the first lap. Nothing dramatic. Still a good car control. It runs much faster than GP2. I did not expect such a good performance from a Win95 game. (Also much better framerate than CPR).

There has not been one Win95 racing sim that is superior to it's older DOS counterparts. There is an interesting Win95 flight sim, Longbow2, which may be the first Win95 sim of any kind (that I know of) to be better than any available DOS sim. It still uses 3D support as a crutch rather than an enhancement, which is becoming an ugly trend. It seems the better the hardware gets, the sloppier the software is -always negating advancement. --
Here we go again - I seem to remember similar posts for Nascar & GP2 Games manufacturers will always aim at the top end PCs - otherwise their product will be outdone by their competitors before it is released. We expect better & better products - unfortunately this means keeping up to date with the latest hardware (CPU, memory, 3dfx cards). For those of us lucky enough to have high end PCs - F1RS runs superbly. A P166 runs GP2 ok, but many of us did not have one of those when GP2 came out. I think you either have to keep upgrading, or accept that you can only run smoothly with the previous generations of the software. Its a fast moving arena - but I don't think we should slag the manfacturers off for keeping pace with the hardware. Ubisoft have created a product that runs far faster on a top end PC than Nascar or even GP2 did at the date of release > > This is so disappointing to hear. I've found if you switch off the replay and mirrors, set the view to the second graphic from the left on the set up that the game is as smooth as silk-it appears that the replay mode is the real bug,and seeing the quality of the replays, why bother. Love the game though

You're right F1 is probably aimed at top end PCs, I just wish software companies would stop claiming their games will run at full speed on a certain system (as Ubisoft did with a system like mine!) when it is just not true!

>There is one word that answers your question......Win95. Without true >pre-emptive multi-threaded multi-tasking the AI calculations just take >too much CPU time. What do you mean by this? That a) DOS couldn't handle it either, because it doesn't have "true pre-emptive multi-threaded multi-tasking" either, or that b) If you can run Ubi F1 under WinNT, like you can many other 3Dfx games, it will be much faster, because NT has "true pre-emptive multi-threaded multi-tasking" for the "AI calculations"? On the other hand, if you believe MS-DOS could have handled it so much better, how come MS-DOS Carmageddon and X-Car are so slow even with 3Dfx support, even with simpler graphics and AI than Ubi F1? Frankly, I don't believe Ubi F1 would have been any faster under DOS, unless you ran it with some 486 machines. This so called "Win95 CPU overhead" for games is rather insignificant on P133 and up. Is that why e.g. "Ignition" Win95 version is faster on my machine than the DOS version of the same game?
Hi! simonp> You're right F1 is probably aimed at top end PCs, I just wish simonp> software companies would stop claiming their games will run at simonp> full speed on a certain system (as Ubisoft did with a system simonp> like mine!) when it is just not true! It's running very smooth on my P200/3dfx combo. But I'm still not able to run GP2 in full detail! I have to disagree here. Motoracer may not be a true *sim*, but as a racing game it is great, and as a bike racing game it is awesome, and it runs under win95 as good as, if not better than, any dos game? Mind you, that's the only one I can think of? so you were *nearly* right!!!!! d:-) * Peter * 8-) Please remove asterix from address to email.

Kas, Performance with games is as much (if not more) down to your own PC & set-up than the programming. How many times do you see posts with some whinging about poor performance whilst others claim the opposite. Are all those claiming "all's fine" liars? Does everyone experiencing problems not know how to properly set-up a PC? (actually in 90% of cases the latter is probably nearest the answer - but that still leaves 10% that do). In terms of Ubisoft's F1rs all I can say is - it runs like a dream on my PII 266 - 64Mb RAM (but I agree - if it didn't run on this then God help the rest!) there's not a hint of slow-down even on the 1st corner at Monaco so many complain of with all 21 opponents and the wet weather switched on.
