GPL 65 - Don't you think it has too much grip?

It feels like an arcade game to me. Isn't it a bit too easy to drive? Ok, low speed grip is too low in GPL, but here I think it is a bit too high. GPL65 cars feel like they have big fat slick tyres. I have oversteering setup with 30/85 diff and can't get wheelspin on corner exit if I don't over rotate the car on corner entry. What do you people think about new phisics? [email hidden]

Are you sure your '65 cars rev highly enough? -I thought they were very easy to drive too, until I noticed I'm getting the '67 F2/F3 sound and a 8500-9000rpm rev limit. Otherwise GEM+ 2 seems to work fine. I can return to '67 settings no problem. Jan. =---
I haven't had much time to drive in it yet, but had a nagging doubt along the same lines as you in initially. Remember there is only half the horsepower in these little screamers, though... That's why we need the same updated tire model for the '67 cars so we can evaluate it properly on a level playing field so to speak. I can't believe the default gear ratios...I can rev to 9000+ in 1st and 2nd...3rd at about 6500 and in 4th, I can't rev over 5...not even on Bloodbath. "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:WoVlc.95993$[email hidden]...

The default setups are encoded in the tracks and are for '67 cars. I had a link to some setups by the beta testers, but I can't find it at the moment. I'm sure it's mentioned in here somewhere... Mid-engined cars are (compared to say, 50's GP cars or pre-aero Trans Am or Can Am etc) much easier to drive near the limit than most people seem to realize. Couple that with the low power to grip ratio from the 1.5L formula and of course it's going to seem easy. You still have to be a great driver to go from being near the limit to actually on it. Remember that when F1 teams started switching to mid-engined cars in 58-60, they were initially slower than the front-engined cars, but were much easier to drive and much easier on fuel and tires so people like Stirling Moss would qualify 13th and end up winning the race since he could just relax and do smooth laps and didn't have to pit for fuel or tires.. Read an account of Aintree 1958 sometime (or was it Barcelona or Casablanca? Whichever race the mid-engined Cooper debuted in). Jason

Well, it was developed using the input of several (ex-)Formula (FFord etc) drivers, who thought it felt OK in the end. This mod was seriously fine-tuned in nearly a year. 'Expat' (who owns a 1966ish Brabham BT21 F2/F3 with about the same size 1500cc-ish engine) tried it yesterday and stated outright he thought it was very good. So make of that what you will. Personally, I think it does feel a bit better handling-wise, but the 'high grip' feel you get is A) caused by the lack of BHP compared to the 67 3 Litre brutes B) because you are not going near the limit yet. Do, and you will notice things are getting on the edge of adhesion. The BRM, btw, has good power but feels more 'slidey' than the Lotus to me (which seems a smidgen down on power, which may influence things as well). So if you think the latter is a bit too grippy for your tastes... Regards, Rudy -------------------- GPLRank: -22

Ok, Expat has given some more info on the subject. So I'll quote and let him speak for himself: "Real Racing vs 65Mod: Brilliant Had not been out and about in the BT 21 since a scorching day at Goodwood last August. As some know, in the past I have found GPL to be a help before testing/track days and also afterwards to reinforce lessons learned. I was therefore all the more delighted to be able to try out - very briefly - the 65Mod the day before my first outing this season at Brands Hatch on Sunday. (..) Great fun dicing with a bunch of Formula Fords!! They have less power than my F2 Brabham - but better grip as they run on more modern Avon compound tires compared to the regulation Dunlop control tires for my class of car. (..) 65Mod: have only had time for a few laps but I think it is a remarkable improvement and much more realistic handling than the 67 cars - which turns into an air hockey game once you lose grip at lower speeds. The 65 cars can be caught more readily - just as I did managed to do (phew) with the BT 21 on Sunday through Clearways and Paddock ( ) and doesn't immediatley go weightless if you put a wheel on the grass. Haven't been able to even d/l some correct setups so the gearing is still all wrong (revs max out too low + drop way down like the engine has a monster flywheel and then you get bogged down - assume/hope the 65 set ups fix this. . .). NB: - I do NOT think the 65 cars are too easy to drive: I think the developers got it absolutely right - congratulations to all for the effort and imrpessive results." So, that's just about as close info-wise as we're going to get, I guess. I still don't think GPL 67 was all that far off btw, it got it right by and large, just needed some fine-tuning; but IMHO with the 65 Mod out, it remains the premier open-wheel sim atm. Now if we could only fit a gfx engine update as well ;) Regards, Rudy -------------------- GPLRank: -22
Like they say in the McDonalds commercial: "I'm lovin' it." Definitely more grip than 67, but dl the proper setups and have a go. There is still a limit to the grip. If you watch the speed, you may see the grip limit is pretty close to 67 at the same speed. At first I thought it was pretty easy. Then I realized how slow I was going! Now I'm seeing some limits as I push harder. 65 is much easier to recover, as said elsewhere. I find myself taking greater risks than 67, getting onto the grass more and using more track. I'm finding it much easier to stay on the proper line and use all the track ... and a bit more. ;-) Jim Marijan wrote:

Kev Firlien (who owns an scca racing team and is a very experienced race driver) Said the mod was extremely well done and reminded him a lot of an ff1600 (formula ford... no wings). I think the mod is great myself dan
