All things being equal, will a (or all ) Radeon 9200 cards out perform my current Voodoo 3 2000 ? The way my agp slot on the mobo is keyed, the 9200 is the highest model that will fit into my abit 133 bx. I'm going by the diagram at this link ( bottom of page ): http://www.ati.com/support/faq/agpchart.html I know a 9200 isn't exactly earth shattering, but I don't want to change my motherboard, and cpu, just yet, so I'm just looking to get something that will give me 32 bit color and be equal to or better than my voodoo. Any help much appreciated.

Depending on the CPU of course, but I went from a Voodoo5 to the ATI R8500 and the speed difference was amazing Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

Yea, it will be faster than a Voodoo3. 9200 is even faster than a Voodoo5, if memory serves me correct. 9200 is about the same as an R8500, right?
There are different versions of the 9200 (R280 chip). It is basicly a 8500, but it comes with both a 64-bit, and 128-bit bus. SE versions are 64 bit's, and some none SE are too. Go for a 128-bit version. Then there are the Pro versions with faster ram, and faster core. / Borchers "Slug" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Fri, 7 May 2004 04:20:47 +1000, "Incubus" <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >All things being equal, will a (or all ) Radeon 9200 cards out perform my > >current Voodoo 3 2000 ? > > > >The way my agp slot on the mobo is keyed, the 9200 is the highest modelthat

I found that the difference depends primarily on which way you want to go. If you want faster frame rates, go for the Radeon. If you can live with slower rates but want outstanding Full Scene Anti-Aliasing, I think the Voodoo wins there. I would still be using my V5 5500 agp if it supported a Transform and Lighting Engine, which is required for all new games now. That is the only reason I went with the Radeon (8500). The Radeon will smoke the V3 in any game/application which doesn't support the latter's native Glide renderer, but relies on D3D or OpenGL instead. Heck, even a TNT2 Ultra will kick the V3's ass in OpenGL. Jan. =---

I went from a V5 to a Ti4600, and didn't really notice any improvement(actually LOST fps in GPL). The only thing the upgrade gained me was that I could now run n2k3. I couldn't with the V5. Incubus, I have the Abit bx6r2, in that machine I have the geforce2 Mx (before they came out with the 200 & 400 versions). It replaced my voodoo4(? I had the highest one they ever produced, in fact the X-wife still has it in her machine, last I knew.), yeah it was lots faster. but the "voodoo" tittles looked like crap. Not that long ago, I bought a better card, for the computer I have since upgraded to now, & since I bought the card long before I had finalized the purchase of the upgrad motherboard & cpu), for giggles, I tried the geforce4 ti4600 128 card in that same old machine. As you can imagine, It was not but a smidgen better than the geforce2mx, due to the 1000 Mhz CPU I had in there was definitly a bottle neck, as was the 2x AGP... (the BH6&BX6 are older than your board I have to bet, as they wouldnt do 133mhz/buss or cpu's (they were slot1 boards, BTW for P-2's )) So I dont think that the radeon's that are comparable will "not" work in your motherboard. they will be sort of crippled, I guess... but I know a crippled geforce4 ti4600 was lots faster than the voodoo4 I had. I can only say your experience is not the norm Eldred ;-) I went from a V3 to a Kyro2 (about the same speed in D3D as the V3 in GLide) to a Gf4200 that absolutely killed the V3 & Kyro2 in every respect and is faster, more compatible & almost as good at filtering & AA as the V5 in my second PC. I don't know why it isn't, but your Gf4600 should be /significantly/ faster in OpenGL than your V3 even in GLide. Malc.

Or software... In those days, NOT sending a triangle was very important. GPL uses a tree to render its triangles, so it can cull per triangle. Nowadays, it's better to just send bursts of triangles and let the gfx card deal with some of the culling (doing only rough culling on the CPU). So GPL is better suited to old hardware; the new hardware is just so fast it doesn't matter that much anymore. I installed my Ti4600 in my other computer for comparison. I'll post after I get it typed up... He has a Voodoo3 though which doesn't do FSAA. I used to have a V5 and it was a very nice card but it's only equal to about a Geforce2 in speed.
