IndyCar Racing II re-released as CART Racing

Posters discussed Papyrus re-releasing IndyCar Racing II as CART Racing, with DOS, Windows 95 and Rendition versions, a driver's guide by former Car and Driver editor Steve Smith, and a $29.95 price, due mid to late October. Marc Nelson said there would be no new features and that the release signalled Papyrus was not abandoning open-wheel racing. Some saw little reason to buy it, especially with Microsoft's CART Precision Racing coming, and Jim Sokoloff noted that Creative Labs had declined to bundle the ICR2 Rendition version.

I have heard many posts about Papyrus releasing ICR2 under a new name, can someone please tell me what the difference will be. Thank You E. Khan

Mark, Do you have any more specifics you can share about the differences between ICR2/Cart? That is, accurate carset? Some new features or updates on the basic game? Thanks Andre

The main difference is in the name: CART Racing. The release will include the DOS, Win95, and Rendition versions, but the Mac was left out of this one I'm afraid. Also included is a Driver's guide written by former Car & Driver editor Steve Smith. The game should be released mid to late October. Cheers! Marc J. Papyrus says there won't be any added features (if that's what you were getting at). It's more or less a repackage of their earlier release. You may be wondering "why?"...Papyrus wants it known that they have no plans on abandoning open-wheel racing... They also wanted to get the guide out, and what better way then to re-release the sim. I've got my optimistic fingers crossed for the future. =) Cheers! Marc

I think think maybe Papyrus is hoping People will confuse it with CART Precision Racing? =) Hehehe.....One thing I dont understand though is...Why would they "re-release" a game,With people still having to pay $39.99,And only getting a new name and a track guide?
Well, from what I've seen of Microsoft's upcoming CART Precision Racing, It seems Papyrus will have to do alot of homework. Dumb guess here, but didnn't Sierra refuse to release ICR2 Rendition version so that only Screamin 3D and Integraph card purchasers got the 3D accelerated version? If so, this is the first shot at the 3d version for the other folks who got cards not bundled with ICR2. Hope they upgrade the art for other tracks like they did for Road America, Michigan and Laguna Seca in the redo--that could be worth the price of re-admission. <g> Bob

The game should retail for $29.95, and I would assume that many outlets would offer some sort of discount on top of that. From what I hear, the guide, much more than a typical track-guide as you indicated, is worth at least 20-bucks. This, coupled with the fact that it includes Rendition support for those with the 3D-Blaster (or any Rendition card without the ICR2 bundle) would most certainly benefit. Seems like a pretty good deal to me - I'll buy it. =) Cheers! Marc

R: If they add networking and a little tighter control for it I'm sold. Q.B.M.

Well even if they didn't, isn't there someone on the net who has gone and done that?? I remember from last spring or so somebody having done the rest of the tracks..at the time he only posted a walkthru so others could do the same, but maybe the whole package is floating around out there... I think you are talking about the process of copying textures from other enhanced tracks to the non-enhanced. However, there is a project which should be finished "real soon now" which has painted "new" textures for all of the non-enhanced tracks. More correctly, Creative refused to pay for it to bundle it with their card. Canopus, Sierra and Integraph all did; CLabs was the only card (at the time) to NOT include the Rendition version of ICR2 AFAIK. ---Jim

They would have to add the new tracks on the circuit to sell me but I doubt that'll happen. Gary Saucier
Really? Even Indianapolis? That would be great! Oh, speaking of Indy textures, there is a utility to improve the scenery for Indy in NASCAR 2. Will this work for IndyCar 2, or is there one for this game? -John :|:

If you use the ICR2 track editor which lets you play with the mip files, and adjust the colours in the NASCAR2 Scenery patches to work in ICR2 (Importing the proper palette with Paint Shop Pro or a similar program), you can use the Indy NASCAR 2 Enhanced scenery for the ICR2 version. The mips will work for either game... just don't try to move the native NASCAR 2 mips into ICR2... seems NASCAR 2 will accept some backwards compatibility but ICR2 will not accept forward compatibility. Will this work for IndyCar 2, or is there one for this game? A while back, I posted a detailed procedure to "enhance" Indy using files from the enhanced tracks included in the 3D version of ICR2 _AS_WELL_AS_ files from N2. I can repost it if you like (if I can find it) as well as post links to "before" and "after" images. Night and day difference man!!!! Not so... see above. I've moved several files from N2 to ICR2 with no problem. Although, it is the 3D Enhanced version of ICR2. I don't know of that makes a difference since that's the only version I have?
Why would anyone that already has ICR2 buy this simm just because of a name change and multiply versons? I think that I'll pass on this one. Joel Willstein

I would think that at such a cheap price ($29.95 US), that Steve Smith's guide would be worth consideration if nothing else. =) Marc

Maybe $19 would be better. Then when you load, we won't need no s***king patches!! :) I just hope they fix that "read-only" patch problem. Once again, sloppy work in that. Just sloppy.
AKhan226 26 Sep 1997#378254
I don't think that this new version of ICR2 will be a success, because with CART precision racing racing coming soon Papy will have to do alot more than than this to blow there competition away.
