GTR joke thread drifts into Kubrick and movie debate
A joke post parodying 2001: A Space Odyssey dialogue about installing GTR prompted more HAL 9000 quotes. The thread then drifted entirely into film talk, debating whether Kubrick was the greatest director, comparing him with Frankenheimer (director of Grand Prix), and later discussing Tarantino and Rodriguez.

HAL: Affirmative, Dave, I read you.
Dave Bowman: Turn off the Pit Limiter, HAL.
HAL: I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.

The keyword here is Kubrick :-)
A director to whom all others are judged.
He is to movies like Papy is to racing.

At first I thought that the only one of his moves that I'd seen was A Clockwork
Orange. I just looked him up on imdb.com, and I've seen a few:
Full Metal Jacket
Spartacus
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
Those movies were entertaining, but I like other directors better.

Is that the best movie of all time? No. By definition, that means that I'll
like another director better. Hell, I even like Frankenheimer better(Grand

I don't think there has ever been another director who delved into the
psyche more deeply than Kubrick.
This guy was so far ahead of everyone else that he still impresses us with
2001 today. (made in 1968)
No phony rocket ship blasts in space...yet the silence was deafening.
Oh, and that AI?
I'm sure Stanley had a much darker image in mind than a teddybear (no
offence Steven).
He was not one for Hollywood commercialism....which is why he sometimes took
years to complete projects.
Like a perfectionist, a true master, it wasn't about the money.
I can't help but have great admiration for the guy.

Seconded. One of the greatest films ever, I'd probably rank it as my
favorite Kubrick film too.
The book is a must-read, altho I'd probably recommend seeing the movie
first since the underlying theme of the story is a bit more subtle in
the film (the book sort of thwaps you in the head with it, especially
towards the end).

True, but I must say I didn't understand the visual language at the end of

Hmmm... wouldn't consider Grand Prix anything special in the
cinematographics stakes. Some innovative racing footage for it's day, but
nothing special in the way of composition/lighting/editing, IMNSHO.

No, those two just happen to be my favourites. I quite liked "Dune" and
"1984" too, BTW, and I do enjoy movies on levels other than it being one of
the artforms.
Trouble is, maybe, there's little "pure" science fiction movies beying made.
Sci-fi adventures, sci-fi thrillers and sci-fi horror(*) a plenty, but
fairly little of the, often slow-paced, social commentary/philosofical
stuff.

Jebus! You're comparing Reindeer Games (a silly, non-sensical crap filled

The supreme god of movie-making versus a B-movie director. TKO in the
fourth round.
I mean cmon, just watch the Island of Dr. Moreau. Frankenheimer has much
bad movies as he did good ones. You only remember Grand Prix because of
it's technical aspect of on-screen racing. Kubrick has made masterpiece
after masterpiece, until he died.

Does it really matter *why* I like and remember Grand Prix? I'm sure some
people only like the movie because they like Eva Marie Saint. So what - it
still gets them to watch the movie...
2001 may be a great film. I'm interested in seeing it, but it's more
curiousity of what all the fuss is about. It's been out for more than 35
years. Since I *haven't* seen it yet, it's obviously not that high on my list
of priorities. Why does that seem to get people in an uproar?

before seeing 2010, and afterwards it went up in my estimation,
although I still think its rather overrated.

No man Eldred it's just not an opinion versus the other. You've seen like 3
movies of Frankenheimer, one being a really bad one (Reindeer games). You
then compare them both as directors. That's like comparing James Horner to
Bernard Herrmann <G>

Actually, I've never seen that. I was thinking more along the lines
of Dead Alive, Meet the Feebles, etc.

You might say Tarntino got his inspiration from Rodriguez. Rodriquez
has done two series of films...The Spy Kids movies, and the Mexican 'El
Mariachi' movies.(El Mariachi, Desperado, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico)
<the last two of these movies with Antonia Banderas> If you watch the
Mariachi films, you can see where Tarantino got his Kill Bill comic book
movie style. (QT was even in one of them.)

Yea, but "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" is a POS and "KillBill" isn't.

That's better than AmeriCUNT. ;-)
Robert Rodriguez...
From Dusk Till Dawn, and just about any Mexican action movie starring
Antonio Bandaras.
He and Tarantino work very closely together and their styles are very
similar.

I'm sure you're familiar with George Clooney.
I assure you, you have NEVER seen George Clooney like he is in "From Dusk
Til' Dawn" :)
