Check out the peak circa summer of 2000. Just before the proliferation of
web-boards.

Google's posting history of rec.autos.simulators
A link to Google's statistics for the newsgroup showed a peak around summer 2000, prompting members to reminisce. Stephen Ferguson recalled the group forming in December 1993, and others blamed the later decline on web forums. Posters remembered past controversies such as CART Precision Racing, the first GPL add-on track, GP3 versus F1 2000, and Jack Rambo's unreleased GPaL.

Same problems as ever. In Dec 1993 I was complaining about framerate
problems with ICR2, bemoaning the artificial steering help in World Circuit,
and starting to solder together my own wheel because nothing decent existed
on the market...

ICR2 didn't come out until 1995, and GP2 in 1996.
I recall getting my first Pentium based PC, a 133mhz cutting edge "monster"
that cost $5,000 US as a Christmas present to myself at the end of 1995, and
buying a Thrustmaster T2 wheel and those two games.
It was a few months after that, sometime in early 1996 that I first came
upon this newsgroup.

Amazing. What happened in the summer of 2000 to cause 12,000
posts a month? Now we get about 1/4 of the posts we averaged
back then (~6000 in more normal months vs. 1500 now).
I'm going to check out how some of the other groupsI frequent
have done over the years...

This could have happened in late 95 though.

Just a guess, but wasn't that about the time that the West Brothers first came
to the forefront?

Perusing the samples, it looks like there were a number of
controversies at full boil - GP3 against the upstart F1-2000, NH
against Nascar4, and GPLRank had started and GPL was gaining interest
(I think the first GPL graphics improvements were coming out then
too).

Like I wrote, it's simply the normal Internet growth, before the appearence
of web boards. When they appeared (about around that time in 2000-01), most
NG on the Usenet starts to go downwards in # of posts.
Soccer moms at home, brat kids on their college PC, they all prefer web
boards and their cheesiness.

Of course I meant ICR1. In December 1993, GP1 (World Circuit) and ICR1 were
very much a topic in the newly-formed newsgroup. I remember transferring my
GP1 discussions from r.a.s.f1 over to the new hangout...

My typo. I meant ICR1, and it was definitely commercial in late '93 (as was
GP1).

chat about GP1)

late 90s. The most controversial period I remember was upon the release of
Cart Precision (man, that word still makes me laugh) Racing. (LOL-makes me
laugh just thinking about it). Talk about shit hitting the fan! Never has so
much hype been about a sim that turned out to be alpha rubbish!
It was this event that got simmers to be extremely pessimistic about all
sim releases since - and normally for good reason. So many expected so much.
Some were convinced - some were outraged that some were convinced. Shit was
flying in all directions, threats of legal action (slander) and generally
the internets version of a WWF Smackdown! Good stuff!
Can any of the regs point to a more stirring time? Probably the release
of GPL was the exact opposite.

Or the release of Brands Hatch for GPL, the first addon track.
That CART Precision Racing incident was really something indeed. It
was also probably the last time any developers were posting to this
newsgroup. That game was a total waste of a good CART licence, but it
had the first (and only I think) attempt to make a race engineer into
the game. It's too bad that you have to be a setup guru to go really
fast. No professional racing driver has to go through that.

You always knew that when either of those two Microsoft guys posted in a
thread, it would be entertaining.

I think 2/3'rds of them simply state "It ain't no GPL".
That may have also been that dreadful period where MHO Gaming was down.

Randy Cassidy posted a fair bit after that, plus more recently Ilari
Lehtinen from Bugbear.

It would be good to see JR around again, he provided me with some of my
first "organized" racing with GPL on his server, and I learned a lot about
simracing in general.....it still bums me out a bit that people only
remember Jack for GPaL not coming out, instead of the servers he ran for us.
GPal was due for release right around the time that WinVROC came out, which
effectively made GPaL obsolete before release, as I seem to recall. Maybe
some of the other historians know more,
