iRacing website relaunch and joystick versus wheel speed

Tony Rickard noted the updated iRacing.com website, and former TEN racers reconnected. Tim Wheatley confirmed iRacing would be manual-shift only, and posters wondered whether it could detect joystick users. That led to recollections of Wolfgang Woeger and other fast GPL joystick drivers and explanations of how pedals allowed left-foot braking tricks.

Ah the best netcode out there. I see the minimum requirements on controls are a wheel and pedals. You know, after 3 years I can't answer the question about auto. I'll have to look :) Roof Riding is no more. You race for real in iRacing :) -Larry "The Coward Robert Ford" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Rqv4k.7483$Jx.4368@pd7urf1no...

Manual Only.
I actually asked Dustin McGrew about you a couple weeks ago. After BETA testing on iRacing and seeing alot of the old TEN racers around - I was going through a bunch of my old sim racing items and came across a photo you posted on the old forum and was wondering what you were up to. If I recall correctly - you gravitated to flight sims didn't you? Scott Don wrote:

Hi, Tim. There is one really "important" thing that I would like to sort out. I noticed that some ratings depend on the number of corners you pass by in a race (so that ratings from oval and road courses can be compared). I am wondering do they count an oval course as two or as four corners? Can you help me with this, this information would really calm my soul, : ). -- Mario Petrinovich
Yep, it has been quite some time, since I have had a racing sim on my system, or one of my wheel's hooked up to it. I guess I just kind of eventually got burned out. I picked up GTR2 one day while I was at Best Buy a few months ago, and haven't even bothered to install it, just can't seem to get motivated. I modded my Cougar with a gimball mod and hall sensors, and got into flight sims ( offline ), and have been having a lot of fun with them, mainly FSX right now, just lazily flying around the countryside enjoying the scenery. I will admit, I looked around the iRacing site and was intrigued, so will be following it's progress, but am not quite ready to plunge into something like that yet... Good to hear from ya, glad to see your still around and racing! -- Don "Scott B. I'm not sure. There is a different mathematical formula used for different types of tracks... So any answer would probably work out being wrong. Dave and John did all the mathematical stuff. ;)

I see you (Don) on a lot of the groups.....:-). I have been using FS for many years and also involved in racing sims since the Hawaii days. THAT was really expensive compared to iRacing's prices. It was not feasible for very long in my household.......:-). I am retired now, so I have some time to give iRacing a go and will probably go for a year to see how it all progresses. Many of the FS folks are also involved in the tech groups because of the horsepower that FS has always taken to run it well. Ed

Roof riding is another matter though and should be banned in all online racing games.

As not everyone has a clutch pedal you also can use the same semi auto paddle setup F1 drivers do, even in a car with a sequential shifter or h shifter. I don't really think you can learn to race drive with a full auto. Cheers Tony

A number of top NR2003 use to use joysticks instead of the wheel. Considering that a joystick and/or wheel are just a couple of potentiometers and buttons at the end of the day, the system wont know what the user has unless they start tracking the device ID of the manufacturer. I'm not so sure. :) Wolfgang Woeger used to use a joystick when setting records with GPL. I think he got slower with a wheel.

I can recall runing a race in VROC/GPL. Wolfgang joined at the last minute and was at the back of the grid. Through some carnage on the first lap I ended up leading. After a few laps I saw Woeger, the GPL legend on my pit board. The gap came mercilessly down until I could see him in my mirrors. I watched him in my mirrors as I drove off the track...

I moved from joystick to wheel. I used wheel when I finaly got it, but I could swear that jostick was somehow more precise. Maybe this really *was* the case. I was also faster with joystick, but I stopped to use it never-the-less. -- Mario Petrinovich
I know this was always a bit of a debate, but I always felt the joystick guys, and to a lesser extent almost all of GPL-iens actually learned to exploit the games "gaps" better then the rest of us. (In one of the early Nascar games for example, if you could hold the car down, half on the track, half off, you would get just insane lap times, something that was actually easier to do with a joystick... not a GPL example, but that sort of thing.) I always wondered how something would do in a better sim with a joystick. I guess we will never find out.

The same for myself, really. Was much faster with a joystick. In fact, could compete nearly with the best of them at the time. Was ranked not far outside the top 20 racers. Finally, after changing to wheel and pedals I never could match those times. However, I used to spend a whole lot more time whilst I was using a joystick - anything up to 14 hours a week - compared to wheel and pedals. Just never seemed to have the same amount of time available. Wouldn't want to go back to using a joystick anymore though. -- Pete Ives Remove All_stRESS before sending me an email

Most of the very fast fellas took advantage of the split axis that can obviously only be offered by pedals - this resulted in an effective ABS. They would set brake bias so that the front end would not lock under full braking and then balance the rear end with throttle. The use of simultaneous brake and throttle meant that the car could be balanced by anyone skilled at this which was especially important with the skatey GPL cars. The only "cheat" in doing this is that brake heat/wear was not modelled in GPL so there was simply a small fuel economy disadvantage. I remember Wolfgang changing to a wheel for this very reason but from memory he never mastered it to the degree that some others did.
> Most of the very fast fellas took advantage of the split axis that can obviously only be offered by pedals - this > resulted in an effective ABS. There's another advantage. A very loose coast differential can be used if a player uses the throttle and brake at the same time. This allows a player to modulate lift throttle oversteer induced from the differential while braking at the same time.

Indeed, as if memory serves did a fellow with the initials DK. Had some small role in the development of GPL I think; maybe you should ask him! Even tried it myself for a bit just to see how it would go. Used the stick with my CH pedals and found you could go really quick since you had near-instant lock-to-lock steering response. But it didn't feel like driving a car, so I went back to my good old Wingman Formula wheel. Still, only time I ever got through Masta flat was with the stick... ;-) SB

--->>near-instant lock-to-lock steering response<<--- That's the key or nail on the head right there Steve! I tried a joystick too - to replace my -at the time, TSW wheel and the first thing you could see in GPL was that with the Joystick you just set the steer ratio nicely and then when driving just "whack" the stick to full lock at corner entry and keep throttle in it. The joystick was fast -maybe faster- than a wheel in GPL. 0-0-0-0-0

They actually do that in real life, it creates oversteer and helps the car turn.

I actually raced GPL with keys for a bit when my wheel broke, when you got used to it you could go pretty darned fast... The longer you held the key the more it turned, you could be fairly precise. Of course traction control was always on as a driver aid though...
