POD or MotoRacer or F1 ?

POD vs Moto Racer vs Psygnosis F1: which to buy?

A user asked which of Ubisoft's POD, Delphine's Moto Racer or Psygnosis's Formula 1 was worth buying. Moto Racer was widely praised for speed, 3D-card graphics and good internet multiplayer, while POD split opinion, with Joe McGinn calling it the worst racer ever and others defending its smoothness, physics and downloadable tracks. F1 was criticised for tearing, poor joystick support and no network play.

Regardless what one thinks of Pod or F1. Motoracer is worth buying, especially if you with it's internet/networking capabilities. Q.B.M.

Oh man .. they all rock *** my system. Pod is SILKY smooth, graphics and the car physics rock .. its not a 'hyper speed' race game, the speed, acceleration, power etc of the cars is more realistic .. and new tracks are being released for it (plus a reverse mode for all tracks). Motoracer is super fast and smooth, easy to control with a joystick and just plain FUN!! F1 is great on my system .. but others seem to have problems with it. I'd get a demo copy and try it before you buy it. POD will rock multi player, I've not tried it yet .. I would recommend POD and Moto for sure. If you have a fast machine you cant go wrong. Keep in mind I have a p200mmx with 3DFX card. Peace. KrisPY

Why not give an example or a situation where your car bounced around like "weightless little pinball machine balls." In my experience of playing the demo, I thought the cars felt really heavy. My complaint with an overall pretty fun game was that the turning was a bit unrealistic. Meaning I could turn on a dime at 135 mph (a full 90 degree turn). Which basically made braking useless. You'd go full speed until you had to turn, and then you turned. Carmaggeddon's physics are not 1000 times better than POD's because they're not all that different. Same arcadey lack of physics feeling. I'm sorry, but the only person not saying much here is you. -che

Moto Racer is a lot of fun on the internet. Meet other Moto Racers by going to #motoracer on any EFnet IRC. Unlike XvT, Moto Racer actually plays really well in 2-4 players on the internet. I've been having a blast. -che

He brings up a good point, and it should help you decide. POD doesn't give the sense of speed because your not going that fast. Its more of a driving skill game, with realistic physics. You can really 'look ahead' in POD, as you do in real driving, as the tracks graphics are sooo smooth and well drawn. You can't go full throttle all the way, there are shortcuts, multiple paths ..etc. I LOVE POD myself, but I also enjoy Moto Racer. Moto Racer is the 'fastest' game I have ever played, but its one where you can go full throttle most of the way once you learn the tracks. Its replay value is less than POD, as new tracks and cars are released for POD monthly. They are so different I would recommend both :) If you can't get both pick which type you like the best .. speed and little skill, or less speed and a bit more skill. peace. KrisPY

The game is OK for single play...if you like chasing ghosts around the track ten feet above the other cars with the 3DFX. The AI is just bump and grind....Blows. Do not get this game.

Pod is one of the worst racers ever made. Nobody would have paid attention to it if it weren't for MMX and 3D cards support.
: it, the way you drive with two tires after partly hitting : a slope etc.), it appears to behave rather realistically. : You have to admit, though, that even though the frame rate of NFS2 is poor, its physics are unmatched. You can even see shock absorber reactions on the car's tires (in replay and cam views). And one thing that bothers me a bit about POD is the sound. Up at the starting line, the car sounds like it has a 427 Hemi under the hood (GREAT!) But when you take off, the engine sounds degrade to that of a Hyunday Excell (YUK!!) Rolando.

As in moto-racer with the dirt bike, when ideling at certain points it actual sounds like a dirt bike. To bad it can't sustain that. OK, so it's a racing-lite game. But damn, the game is smooth, especially with 3D acceleration. When I first saw this, I thought it was an FMV! But then, the game is LITE. Clee

I like POD myself. It has great graphics. I think a lot of people here are looking for simulator type games, POD is an arcade type game and is fun to play with arcade quality graphics. I like both arcade and simulator racing games. Nascar II is the best simulator racing game in my opinion and would be great in a 3dfx version.

>:POD is the worst racer ever made, avoid it like the plague. I'm still >I've grown to hate these "avoid it like plague", "worst racer >ever made" etc. posts. But it really is. I own or have owned just about every arcade and sim racer that's been published on the PC. I'm ***ed to them, I buy them all. And I've never been as disappointed with a racer as I was with POD. It was just so bad, I think it's the first racer I've ever owned that I didn't even try all the tracks. I tried about half of them and then deleted the piece of ***from my hard-drive, sold id for $25 and counted myself lucky that I got that for it. Too late, I got rid of it - maybe if the game has included a manual or even keyboard chart that contained this information it would have helped. It is an essential requirement in an ARCADE racer. Without it little else matters. Not if you like driving a pinball machine ball. I was hoping for CARS myself. A high frame-rate is meaningless if it doesn't translate into a feeling of speed or at least good control over the cars. A BIT garish? That's an understatement. That's another thing that bothered me about POD - after reading about how great it looked I couldn't believe how downright UGLY it was. If it wasn't for the stupid looking cars (why no normal cars like in nfs2?) it would be my favorite racing game. You kidding? NFS2 is my #1 racing game. Voodoo support would be nice, but i still like it better than all voodoo games together. I play it on a p6-200, with all settings set to maximum, and as far as i can tell fps never drop below 30. The only thing that annoys me in nfs2 is the 'intelligence' of the other drivers in tournament mode: they would rather run into you and crash themselves than letting you pass them by. I've been in a three player TCP/IP Moto Racer race and it was very good -- till we switched to another player as host. John Burrowes.
Another opinion - MotoRacer is _really_ good fun, with physics which pay homage to the real thing while maintaining arcade playability, and fantastic multi-player performance. The only problem is that the margin for error becomes tiny - in our race everyone is racing virtually perfect, with laptimes of around 38s on Speed Bay. Essentially that means that one mistake dumps you out of the race, which is a bit of a bummer just trying not to make a mistake. There's no high-risk possibility to gain time or catch-up mode which arcade racing usually needs. POD is far and away and without a shadow of a doubt the worst racing game I have ever played. A serious lack of impression of speed, dull tracks, uninvolving physics, pinball like car properties, I even deleted the free demo. That's playing it with a 3dFX card. I personally would avoid this at all costs. Second only to POD, NFS2 seems to be one huge FMV nightmare. Driving involvement falls far short of NFS1, and new cars and clothes do not make up for it. Of the current crop of arcade racers, Moto Race is most fun, with "F1" second. That's my opinion, primarily based upon how much fun they are to drive. -- Cheers! We'll he is right, if you switch to the***pit view you definitely get more of a sense of speed with POD. I think its an excellent game. Although going up a hill shouldn't be bogging down the car like it does. I also would have preferred less futuristic looking racing cars.

Totally agree with your comments about POD, and I was beginning to think I was the only one who disliked this game. I bought it, installed it and deleted it the same day. Motoracer however, now this is a game I could get *seriously* ***ed to. In fact it's probably saved me money on my phone bill, every time the PC gets switched on now I'll have 'just a quick game' (it never is) of Motoracer instead of spending hours playing internet Quake! A special mention must go also to Carmageddon too. Never has a demo spent so long on my HD, I've played it to death but I still keep going back for more! -- Deek, Edinburgh, Scotland. I gotta get a new spam killer, this one's shit!

Sorry, but I have no idea what the future engines sound. ;-) Heck, I don't even know what kind of fuel they use! Maybe the POD cars are new nuclear powered, silent engines?

>>I've grown to hate these "avoid it like plague", "worst racer >>ever made" etc. posts. >But it really is. That's your opinion. Many people actually like POD, so apparently it isn't the "worst arcade racer ever". You like Cruisin' USA better? You like Megarace better? To each his own. I've had lots of racers where I haven't played all the tracks. Nascar for one. So I guess Nascar is the worst racing game ever then. Hey, come to think of it, I haven't played all the tracks in Moto Racer either! ;^) For some reason the European version did have a hardbound manual. Are you sure there were no README-files or anything? Many people still love Monster Truck Madness and Nascar. Nascar is not an "arcade racer", but I'd think that your requirement of "sense of speed" applies to all racing games, including sims. Yes, I find the sense of speed in POD better than in the original Nascar Racing by Papyrus. Seems to me you were playing a different game than I was. Do the cars bounce off the walls like a pinball ball, or what do you mean? Didn't see that myself in POD. Have you tried real life mini cart racing (or whatever it is called)? The handling of the POD cars resemble it a lot in my opinion. For instance, you can try to take the corners in full speed, but that may make your car spin, just like in POD. Or if another "car" hits you from behind from an angle, you most probably spin, just like in POD. And the sense of speed in POD is actually better than in real life mini cart racing. ;^) POD has both IMO. Try the***pit view.

>>Why not give an example or a situation where your car bounced around >>like "weightless little pinball machine balls." >OK: Start a POD race. Drive a car. That's it. Tried that. Still didn't see it bouncing off the walls like a pinball machine ball. Usually it stopped if I hit the walls. I wonder how a real car would behave in a similar situation? ;^) Wrong. There is an option for the driving wheel, which feels quite different to the joystick option. One difference was that with the wheel there basically seems to be no "dead zone" (just like your car most probably doesn't have one), while with a joystick there is a dead zone to help you drive straight more easily when needed.

I dunno, I don't usually go crounging around the hard-drive to find out basic interface information about a game. It's always come with the game before. Yes, and of the other cars, which were also bouncing around. It seemed impossible to get any RACING started. Joe

Well, there wheel support suck then. It didn't feel even remotely like a real car. Joe

I've seen Megarace 2 and I think POD is very different from it. The tracks in Megarace 2 are pre-rendered. So the tracks are actually playbacks only. In POD, however, the tracks are fully 3D. This makes a difference because in Megarace 2 the player is very much limited and cannot look at the tracks freely. IMO the physics model in POD is good enough for an arcade racer. The cars climb up the wall if it's not too steep and also flip over if they pass a slope with two wheels on the same side.

To this day I will still say that Megarace 2 is one of the best racers out there (although Megarace 1 sucked)... Its gorgeous (who cares if its on rails, ALL racers are that wont let you go off the track), and it plays fast even on low-end machines at a higher than 320x200 res. Andy K.

Exacally.....POD is an ARCADE game...not a sim, so don't judge it as a sim. Sheash! ;) And it is a very good arcade game too. I am...i guess one of the few that really like the game. I have played the demo alot, and now am seriously considering buying it. Although I have one complaint... the engine sound is preaty bad. When your at the starting line it sounds great (like their is a 12-cylinder turbo somthing under the hood.....muhahaha) but once you get going it sounds like an electric car. I will admit I am being critical, but it would have been nice to have a nice engine sample. Nascar is the only game I have played that had good engine sample (really realisitic to be honest). All the other car sims I have played have the same electricish engine noise. Oh well, that was my couple o cents. Get Moto Race and Monster Truck Madness. Both of the games r0X in multiplay via Kali (www.kali.net) and are phun 2 play. POD is OK, alot of style (ie grafiX) but not much substance

Hey ! i agree with the below mentioned***PIT view as it was called . . Power F1 is totally AMAZINGLY FAST to me when i can see out just over the dashboard . . Have a totally new awe-inspired respect for those real-life race car drivers ! --- catamount
MotoRacer is by far the best. POD is the worst racing game I have ever played. WIth my Screamin 3D card, MotoRacer looks awesome and runs very fast. On the same system, POD crawls and looks wrotten. I have not played F1 yet, but I would recommend MotoRacer to everybody looking for a great racing game.
I don't think Pod supports the Rendition chip (?), which may explain why it crawls. It does support the 3dfx, and runs fast if you've got one for sure, but I agree with you that it looks and plays rotten. During the brief time I had it loaded and played it, I kept asking myself, "Why?". Not being able to give myself a sensible answer, I freed the drive space and returned the (?)game. I will say one thing though. There is some A-1 support on the Pod website. Darned shame there's not more to support. Jerry Morelock
Well on my system with a Monster, POD rocks!!! Yeah , so it's not the most realistic racing game. I didn't buy it for realism. I have a P100 with 32megs, and I get 30+ fps always. POD was written natively for the 3dfx, not just D3D. And for those of you who have it or have the demo. The best tracks aren't in the game, but on UbiSoft's site for downloading. I've seen the demo for Motoracer, and it too rocks. can't wait till it's out in the US. And Formula F1...it should be in stores any day now. The screen shots look phenomenal, and I can't imagine how much fun it'll be to race with those graphics at 30+ fps. This is going to be the best summer ever for PC gamers. One's with 3D cards that is. <G>

I've been playing the MotoRacer demo, and although there are some hilariously fun tracks and tricks, the arcade driving (riding?) model is hard to get used to. I keep thinking that my hard earned sim techniques will diminish if I get good at a game where you can corner without skidding, do a jump and rear end somebody at top speed, then keep going like nothing happened. I really hope that in the final game you fall off the bike more often, even compared to Road Rash this game was way too forgiving. It is permanently on the 'easy setting, so hopefully that's it. Fun, though, except that annoying voice at the end if you don't get the podium: "You lost the race.." well, duh. Now, I wouldn't go that far, POD is what it is, a futuristic arcade game, and it seems to do that well, maybe it just requires a higher end system. Once again, I hope in the final that they fixed that garbage can sound when you run into the walls, little things like that would keep me from buying the damn thing. Good God, from what I've played of it, and what I've heard... it seems like an irrelevant addition to the racing scene. Oh well... Have fun racing, Raevyn

I have a question about F1 to all you folks out there: is it really fast on a Matrox Mystique graphics card (4 MB) ? I've seen a test in a german pc-games magazine and they were very disappointed about the speed of the graphics. As I said, I own a pentium 200 MMX with Matrox Mystique and I would buy the game if the graphics are smooth and fast. Can anybody comment on this ? Thanks. BTW, I own F1GP2 and I believe the graphics are quite fast - probably except the monaco course (all details switched on except the textures in the mirrors). Will F1 be faster on my machine ? Man, was I let down by this title. F1 sux bigtime. U can't use joystick and the resume feature only works when U'r in the game. If U leave the game and the enter it again the resume button is not available. U'll have to drive the whole championship in one sitting. And the tearing. I mean, I've got a P200MMX and the Righteous 3D so I belive that I shouldn't put up with that kinda ***programming. The racing model is just awful even in the Sim mode. I went to the store and exchanged it for Carmageddon. Now thats fun. On POD: This game rocks. The speed. The fun when playing both championship and multiplayer. New tracks and cars all the time.
