Just to loosen up the old Xfiles brain cells. Has anyone noticed that Indianpolis native David Letterman, who is partnered with Bobby Rahal, has taken a bigger financial stake in Rahal Racing(owners of race winner Buddy Rice's car)? Is it just coincidence that the local hero's team, with a substitute driver, outruns all the big boys? Dontcha just love these coincidences? Or that last time Team Rahal used honda power he couldn't even qualify? dave :) henrie
lap 174, rice makes a mess of overtaking Takagi, slows, Kanaans about to catch him, then all of a sudden the yellow came out. pah! pez "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Are you related to Oliver Stone? Uhhh, when did Rahal Racing become a second tier team? You're just showing your ignorance classifying BR as just a 'substitute driver'. Lack of proper sponsership monies . . . not talent, has been his (and the majority of young american road racer's) roadblock. And oh yeah, weren't the top 7 all Honda powered? ;-) Get over it DH . . . . . your TG/IRL conspiracy speculations have worn thin with me, give me some substance next time please!! I never said Rahal was a 2nd rate team. I did say that Rice was a substitute driver, he would not have that seat if Brack was healthy. From the sound of his interview he had to pay part of his car costs. I just think that it's odd that Indianna native Letterman, who's been virtually a silent partner all these years, suddenly ponies up more Dollars and buys more interest in the Partnership. And his reward? T***'s Track, T***'s engines, T*** wins. Last I heard, around Motegi time, Toyota was already concentrating on the 3 litre formulae for Indy, but Honda was so desperate to win at Motegi they had focused all their development on the old 3.5 litre engine to win there. And when May started the Toyotas had a definate edge. But..Honda was the big spender this year...buying out Fernandez, buying out Rahal. Instead of Rahal/Letterman it should be "Rahal/Letterman brought to you by Honda." Supposedly Honda is offering 24 MILLION dollars to Carl Haas to bring one car and one driver over to the irl. I would imagine the Rahal/Ferndandez deals were similar. So like any good Don, T*** rewards his loyal minions...top 7 cars all Honda. The plot thickens...Remember...I'm not just making all this stuff up...it's all out there. I just draw lines from one item to the next. Do you really think a company like Honda will spend 75 MILLION US dollars just to have 3 more cars in the irl? Risk vs Reward. Except for Indy, the IRL Cable ratings are less than 1 share. 75 million for Rahal, Fernandez, & Haas plus whatever Team Andretti gets and all this for a 1 share on TV? I think I'll go find some used irl tub and sign on with Honda. Enough substance for now? dave henrie

Why are you so surprised that a large corporate entity would throw their money around needlessly. . . . where you been? ;-) Also, do you really think Penske, Ganassi and Foyt would stand by idly if what you're insinuating was fact :-) The Toyota powered Hornish . . . . until his accident . . . . was without a doubt the man to beat, he worked his way past the Honda powered Rice and was actually drawing away until his misfortune in the pits. I suppose TG was responsible for his 'faulty' fuel rig, or maybe he pushed the button that was soft-wired to Greg Ray's car, detonating it at juuuust the right time to take out the evil empired Toyota? ;-) I've followed American open-wheeled racing for 25 yrs., I'm as frustrated with the current situation as one could get and I'm 'not' a TG supporter, but it pisses me off when people like you choose to focus on thought up conspiricies as to why B. Rice won The Indianapolis 500 instead of giving the man & team it's due. Seems to me your hatred of 'The Dark One' has become unhealthy, surely (you watch TV don't you ;-) there are meds available to help you get thru this. DN

You are right of course. But, Buddy's win does deserve credit. And...I will freely admit that my views of the s.e.b. have become 'slightly' skewed. However.....it is just sooooo much fun to trash the l.r.b. that I find no reason to stop.....ESPECIALLY when THEY(the evil empire) give me so much ammunition. And what THEY don't provide...I can make up. :) Now back to Letterman....ABC(the broadcasters of the indy race) made a large unsucessful bid about a year ago to lure Mr Letterman and his World Wide Pants company away from CBS and into the ABC fold. Back when he was just a name on the letterhead at Rahal Racing, ABC didn't have the clout to bring him over. Now that they are defacto partners...how long til the current CBS contract expires? Another bit of substance...The two Japanese manufacturers left CART for two reasons. One they said CART capriciously changed the engine specs and only gave them about 1.5 years to implement them.(of course when the IRL changed engine specs just a few months BEFORE the new season, they seemingly had no problem adapting.) Two...and honestly I forget who first was accused...But I think it was Honda that went to CART and claimed Toyota had bypassed certain rules to increase the amount of air the engines were receiving. So CART slapped Toyota's hands and made them fix the plenums. But then it was revealed that Honda had also done pretty much the same thing and THEY screamed bloody murder when CART also disciplined them.(as I stated..I'm foggy on the exact order of guilt...but the context remains the same regardless who blew the whistle first.) All this time Ford was prepared to offer some of the new engines in time for the season. Even Ilmor the Mercedes/Phoenix engine builders offered to sell CART old Turbo blocks until the other manufactuers could implement the normally aspirated engines. So now you have these two known cheaters supplying the entire front half of the grid with engines. you TRUST these guys to play fair? dave henrie

Letterman decided not to switch stations because he would have taken over Ted Koppel's Nightline slot and put him out of a job. I remember the Letterman show where he finally announced his decision and explained himself. Of course, I could be thinking of the wrong year :-P >dave henrie > Todd Wasson Racing Software http://PerformanceSimulations.com http://performancesimulations.com/scnshot4.htm
