NFS SE, NASCAR 1 Modem Woes (Aptiva woes?) (NEED HELP)

I've been trying to get a "playable" modem game of NFS SE going now for about 2 weeks. Win95 version connects OK but play is VERY SLOW. Tried the DOS version, but the computer on the other end is an IBM Aptiva S with an MWAVE modem sound card and this computer either crashes or hangs after modems try to link up (noticed this with Nascar 1 also). Tried all types of init strings etc. to no avail. Anyone with these games and an Aptiva get a modem game to work well? Any help would be appreciated!
