Hello!
I own the quite old but still nice Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel
Gameport version.
Sadly i use Windows XP and M$ is bnot supporting this hardware with software
anymore.
I can get the Wheel connected and working just fine but i have no force
feedback.
Sometimes like a miracle i have force feedback and then it disapears as soon
i close the application.
I tryed the Gameport of my motherboard and the gameport of my soundcard
(hercules Gamesurround Fortissimo III 7.1). I played with the midi settings
but nothing helped.
FF ist not working 99.5% of the time wich is a shame.
Please don't post: Get a USB version since i am not willing to do so.
I payed a lot money for this device when it came out and it's in perfect
condition. I just want to get the FF to work under Windows XP (PRO)
I know this is a common problem and i've searched a lot but haven't found a
solution so far.
Thanks for your help in advance.
P.S: Sorry for my poor english. It's my 2nd language.
I think there's a version 4 of the Sidewinder software that works with XP
and gameport wheels, try a search of google, I believe it's not on M$'s web.
Andi.

That's exactly the problem. I can't use 4.0 Software. It only works with USB
devices. An USB to Serial adapter wont work either. People have tried that.

.Before you boot up your PC unplug the power pack.
Boot up
Load the game. Enter the track, while sitting in the pit plug in the power
pack.
I have a USB verison of the wheel and when I do that the wheel seems to
tighten up and feel like it did when I ran under win98. Downside is when the
server resets the wheel does back to the weak FF feeling... You know the
almost no FF feeling. The wheel feels very loose..
Well, give it a shot and see what happens.
Its sad MS pushed this wheel under the rug.

trick didn't get the FF activated.
Sometimes it just does it itself. It's totally wierd. :(

Gameport version of the MSFF are not supported, you know that already, you
have probably figured out by now that there is no reliable workaround.
That leaves you with 2 choices..replace the wheel, or replace XP. That is
pretty much what everyone else in your situation did when they tried
upgrading to XP. I'm sure you also know that most parallel port scanners
and many other 'legacy' devices are also not supported under XP anymore. If
you're not willing to upgrade teh hardware to be compatible XP standards,
don't use XP.

be any graphics/other drivers for 98 anymore so switching back to 98 for
gaming wont be a solution.
For now i'll do that though.
Microsoft sucks.

Why not go with a dual partition? With a little bit of research on how
to do it, you could get it done yourself. Though it's been a couple
years since I've done it, I have Win95 (my 98 disc disappeared years
ago) and XP on my machine. I don't use '95 at all, 'cause my
Soundblaster 128 isn't supported, but I doubt you'll run into a problem
like that with '98.
Then it would just be a minor hassle to restart and boot up Win98.

Could you possibly have a joystick connected or selected under controllers
on LFS?, mine has controller 1 & 2 if I have both connected and select the
wrong one then the wheel only gets centering and no ff.
