Psygnosis F1

Can anyone please tell me whether the PC release of F1 will have an in ***pit view (as per Microprose GP2)? This will bring it closer to being a sim. If not, do we have to settle for the up above and behind view (as the Playstation has I think)? I've seen some screen shots that seem to suggest there is a compromise view that is like the view from the front spoiler (ie. looking straight at the road in front of you with the key readouts superimposed on the screen). Can anyone please set me straight.

I don't own the game, but when I rented it, I think I remember being able to change the***pit view between several choices. I would assume PC version would do the same.... Tim

The PS version actually has quite of lot of different views (including the Ridge Racer type) but not a *proper****pit view :-( According to the current PC Zone [UK] the PC version shares a lot of code with the PS version. I doubt we'll see anything more than a (hopefully) debugged version with much-enhanced graphics. One other point is that the PC version will require a Voodoo card or D3D. Incidentally in the UK the ITV coverage of the first GP actually featured some footage from the PC version - it looked very impressive although something was amiss with the framerate; presumably the PAL conversion. I was as scepticle as you but Sarah from Bizarre Creations confirmed on the 3DFX newsgroup that it was running on a PC! Dean

What is a sim and isn't a sim is a matter of personal taste. Frankly, the actual simulation of the tracks and sounds is far better than GP2. And it is a bear to drive; easily as on the edge as GP2 or even ICR2, and far less forgiving on the grass or sand. But it doesn't have the "I'll be the crew chief, mechanic, owner and driver of the car" sim feel that Papyrus set the standard for many years ago, which most sims like GP2 follow. You are the driver, that is it, not much garage input or tweaking. Your job is to forget about setups and see if you can outdrive your opponents. I think the drive model is pretty good. The AI of the other drivers *really sucks*. They are the most agressive jerks you could ever hope to imagine, as if they seem to know that, uh, they can't be pushed off the course and that you can! Sort of like indestructable Eddie Irvines, I guess would be the most recent apt comparison. Psygnosis has the default view being "behind and above." It is a lousy view, and fortunately you can change it. The only view worth racing is the "down on the front wing" view, but I think they didn't make it default because, well, you really have to learn the tracks to drive that way, which is pretty similar to what I guess you'd see as a driver. It really isn't very different than being in a pretend***pit in ICR2 or GP2- except 1/3 of the screen isn't taken up with a faux ***pit. It is as if you are looking through the camera on the wing, complete with the stripped in Tag Heur (sp) split times and all. I like both GP2 and Psyg's F1; when you get sick after a while of one, the other looks good.

<Big Snip> Surely not, the version shown on the telly looked incredibly detailed and smooth compared with the PS version I've played on my mates PS. I know the PCZone article said it was better than the PS 'cos it was a 3D accelerator game only, but these graphics on the telly were amazing. Another thing, I thought the PS and PC versions were gonna support the same season 'cos Psygnosis bought the '95 licence only. Melbourne has only been raced at in the '96 and '97 seasons. I think the Psygnosis ITV Martin Brundle F1 experience was a special track built by Psygnosis for the programme (spending more of the massive ITV F1 budget!) and was done on the Silicon Graphics WS that the game is probably developed on. Does anyone know if there will be a "true***pit" view in Psygnosis F1. How about the dynamics engine. Will it be more complex than the PS version? I have tried the PS version and it seems to be lacking in this field, but i was also using the dipshit gravis-like pad that came witht the system and therefore could not really get a good determination. If anyones tested the "beta" please post any info! Thanks, -David Gary-
