1997 Richmond NASCAR race: TV coverage and Gordon's tactics

A question about who televised the March 1997 Richmond Winston Cup race (ESPN) turned into a debate about Jeff Gordon racing the leaders hard while a lap down. Some saw it as reckless, others as legitimate racing to regain his lap, and posters noted that Rusty Wallace's win stood after his engine was declared legal. The thread was entirely about real-world NASCAR.

Was the race at richmond televised this weekend I just seen raceday and the race was held but who televised it damn it I didn't want to miss a race this year ....
> Was the race at richmond televised this weekend I just seen raceday and > the race was held but who televised it damn it I didn't want to miss a > race this year .... ESPN (not the deuce) broadcast it flag to flag live. Did anyone else think Gordon was a little out of control on the last 10 laps? He almost cost Wallace the win, all the while a lap down. Maybe he thought he was on the lead lap, going for the win!! ;) Mike

Either he didn't know he was a lap down (impossible), or his mega-ego prevented him from allowing the leaders to pass (probable). Was there any other possible reason for him to be racing with the leaders? I hope NASCAR has a word with him. Patrick.

He was going for the win! There were only four cars on the lead lap. Had he not lost the momentum slowing down to miss ervin he would have made up the lap and could have raced for the win on the last few laps. It almost paid off. After he didn't make it, he still had to race hard because Rudd was on his tail and that was for position. Brad

If he could have gotten his lap back he would have been fourth and had a shot at it.No he wasnt out of control he was just racin.Thats what Nascar racing is all about. You dont stop just because your a lap down, If they did that it would only have been five cars on the track. Eric

Wrong. Nothing wrong with Rusty's car, despite the fact that Jeffy was trying with all his might to put some wrinkles in it. Oh, and by the way: Ernie's crash -- started when Jeff drove over Ernie's right front tire, which caused it to go down a few laps later. So, Jeff's 'been around the start of' (don't want to offend any of you Gordon fans) two wrecks this year, Irvan none. I think Jeff's making a run ar supplanting Ernie as the King of Crashes. JG also hit two water barrels at the start of pit road earlier. What was he doing anyway? Gordon also hit got into Irvan which made him lose a tire and hit the wall. -- To all you villans out there I say, knock off all that evil! ESPN had it I believe Rusty won but that is unofficial something about his engine is getting inspected by the officials. I guess he was messing with the .TXT files:)
ESPN ran the race on Sunday. They'll probably rebroadcast a couple time on ESPN2. However, Ernie had not crashed when Jeff was racing really hard to get by Rusty. Until Irvan's wreck, all Jeff had to race for was finishing 4th on the lead lap as opposed to finishing 4th a lap down. That's what bothers me. Irvan's wreck and ensuing caution just gave him an excuse for racing Rusty that hard. But that was after the fact. I've got to agree on this one Kyle. I'm a Gordon fan, as well as a Wallace fan. But, I don't think what JG pulled those last few laps were professional _at all_. I was happy to hear Rusty slam him on it in the post race interview. Shawn Wise

I thought he a little out of control, especially when he started rubbin' fenders with Jarrett on the next to the last restart with about 20(?) to go. However, he was faster than both Jarrett and Wallace at that point, and if he had been able to keep his lap, he could've picked up fresh tires, started 4th behind Bodine, and maybe even had a shot at the win. So, I can't fault him for trying to make up his lap, but I do think he was driving much too hard for being a lap down that far into the race. It's pretty fortunate that he didn't take Jarrett out. Has anything come out on Wallace's engine yet? I know they confiscated it after the race, but I haven't heard the outcome. Jarrett, in essence, took himself out. Why did he have that lousey restart? Wallace drove right by him. After the race the announcers said they'd be right back after the commercial to speak with Jarrett. Instead they talked to a lapper(J.Gordon) and I didn't hear Gordon thank God for putting him a lap down. Wallaces engine failed a compression test twice after the race. However, the next day is was OK'd. Go figure. Terry

Actually, if Godon would not have slowed (due to the wreck), he would have raced back to the line to remain on the lead lap. The yellow flag would have bunched him in with the rest of the leaders. He would then be right behing the leaders. Maybe he would have finished better than 4th, maybe not. But it would have made a big difference on the restart. (4th and a lap down, or 4th right behind the leaders)

And if you're lucky the local affiliates of ABC and CBS won't pre-emt the race with a local game like ABC did with the indy cars last Sunday (They showed a local basketball game instaed) and CBS did with the Tally re-broadcast last year (It was never shown at all here in Cincinnati) Sorry, but I'd be happy if Nascar only let Espn, Espn2, and TNN carry the races. Sounds like Rusty was playing in the gray area. With the popularity of Nascar Racing growing the "high and mighty" didn't want to turn off all the new fans by telling them the teams resort to "Cheating" to win. But I could be wrong. -- MyKey

Although, after all the discussion and Monday morning quarterbacking, Benny Parsons said on RPM2Night that JG was completely doing the right thing, ie. what he had to do to win the race. I think that it was a little out of character for him (JG) and maybe a little out of line, but I also think that BP makes a valid point. Tough call and just maybe in the heat of the race, hasty decisions were made. Hmmmmm. Mike

Rusty said in the post-race interview that he had backed off a car length and tried to anticipate the green. I also noticed he was scrubbing his tires a lot, where Jarrett didn't seemed to be. Could be that Jarrett just didn't have the traction when the flag dropped. That was pretty sad. They also completely ignored Bodine, who I thought ran a pretty good race.
