It gives you access to some VESA resolutions (in VQuake for example)
not available in the cards BIOS. As far as performance though, I
didn't see any change.

Although 5.3a dose not improve on the performance of the Verite cards, the
Reactor (Intense) 3D card unlike the Blaster card does not have a utillity
to change the monitor refresh rate in Dos, so that when you have a 2D
bright screen i.e. the setup sheet in Nascar2 there is a lot of flicker.
SciTech's Utillities that come with the 5.3a driver allow you to set Dos
refresh rates. I changed my Dos (2D) refresh rate from 60Hz to 85Hz.
Bingo! a very stable screen.
