Now, I know many of us saw the DAYTONA 500, yesterday. I too watched
the race. Also, I want you to know this posting is purely OPINION and
NOT FACT, therefore, it is not a way to start any kind of rumors, just
a means to retreive some information from those who have more
knowledge than I.
However, during one of the latest yellow flags, the program shifted
its focus onto the new DAYTONA SPEEDWAY Exhibit Hall. Watching very
closely, I spotted some very unique screen shots and sounds from the
simulators that appear to be from Nascar 1 Racing, not SEGA. Does the
exhibit hall use Nascar 1 Racing as their simulation for all who come
to the exhibits to qualify and race the DAYTONA SPEEDWAY?
Now then, if indeed this is Nascar 1 Racing, and indeed the people
were qualifying on a replication of the DAYTONA Track, where is the
global release of the Daytona Track to the thousands of consumers that
have been begging for it?

Having actully been to daytona usa and playing the game it doesn't have
Daytona in it. It just has all the other tracks. They have about 5 or
6 computers set up with wheels and everything. Hopes this answer your
question.

The previous poster is completely loony or a pathological whatever! I
was there, Daytona USA, the day it opened to the public last year, the
day of the Pepsi 400 rainfest. They have ONLY the Daytona track and it
is ONLY for qualifying. There are no other tracks and there is no
racing! It is Nascar 1 however. You qualify like Tally and if you're
good enough to be in the top ten for that particular day, then you can
enter your name and it is displayed on a huge red LED board overhead for
all to see. The track is different from Tally though. It seemed to
have more of the undulations in the track, ie. it was bumpier or wavy,
not perfectly smooth. To all the RAS people its like a Holy Grail and I
can tell you that it lives up to the expectations. Could only be made
better by faster PCs; theirs were kinda slow.

I think the reference was to the Papyrus booth at Daytona, where
there's a "special" one-off version of NASCAR-Daytona (by same
company)...They can only have this one booth (due to licensing),
so don't go off by asking "where's my Daytona?!!" ;)

I'm pretty sure Sega has already extended their exclusive rights to
Daytona for a few more years, so it's doubtful we'll ever see this
track for a Papyrus sim. Indy is another story all together, but I
don't see why Texas and California wouldn't make it into some sort of
add-on eventually.

Sega has an arcade game called Brickyard 400. It's just like the
arcade version of Daytona USA. Don't expect an Indy add-on anytime
soon.

The actual story of what's going on at Daytona USA (correct me if I'm
wrong Papy) is that Papyrus was contacted by Daytona USA during it's
construction to create for them a Daytona only qualifying simulator
based upon the NASCAR Racing 1 engine. Papyrus concurred and, after
making modifications to the engine (which make the module incompatible
with the retail version of NR1), and constructing the Daytona track
presented them with the product. Apparently this was a one-time deal
and in no way could be seen as an indication that a licensing bargain
was in the works to bring Daytona to the retail version of NR1 (or NR2
for that matter). FWIW, I still carry hope that the release of the
NRO to the public may cooincide with the release of a track pack which
will provide us all the opportunity to visit Daytona, Indy, Texas and
California. This is only my opinion and should in no way be construed
as fact.

us Daytona,Or they would have out bid for the rights,It is time for some
one here to get the balls and make it ourselves,Even though they say if
we do it will hurt our chances in ever getting the rights to Daytona. The
hell with it,Sierra/Papyrus has dropped the ball again,If someone can
teach me or tell me where I can get the right tools,I will do it myself
I am sick of being deprived of Daytona because those guys are to damn
cheap
MY 2 cents worth
Steve
You think this was a bidding game?..From what planet do you call home?
That aside, if it had come down to bidding (which I believe it did not),
then it would have most likely been a closed one. AFAIK, Papyrus felt
they had the deal sewn-up, but Sega's renewal had caught them by surprise.
But of course, this info is falling to a deaf ear...
As far as balls, your bank account better be bigger...I hear Sega's (and
NASCAR's) lawyers can be very persuasive. You're even aware of what
could happen, and yet you're willing to***everyone just to be able
to have the D on your drive?...How stupid and uncaring can you be?
Geez...You can't even learn to be patient, let alone learn to be cool and
have fun with what you have...Want to learn to make Daytona? Then get
an education (perhaps in CIS or IEEE), and create it. I suppose by that
time we'll have N4 (Daytona and Indy included), a solution to world peace,
and an end to hunger and poverty!!
I'm tired of being deprived of certain items when jerks (such as yourself)
take it upon themselves to do things there own way (in an illegal sense).
You're worried about being deprived of a stupid track (which IMO would
be quite anti-climatic if offered now)...If you want a fair representation
of
the track, then change the name of 'dega to 'tona...Otherwise, buy the
Sega game, because it'll probably satisfy your immediate fixation to this
problem.
Normally, I avoid stupid comments about "I want this, and I want that,
why don't I get it?" kinda' crap, but something about your post brought
out a little monster in me...For this, I apologize to others forced to
wade
through your garbage, as well as my own. You'll no doubt hear from
others far more elliquent than I.
...your change, sir.

This isn't about having the balls....this is about lacking intelligence.
Otherwise you'd know why Sierra/Papyrus hasn't given you Daytona, and
you'd know why you shouldn't try to make Daytona yourself. Sega is a big
company and has more $$$ than Papyrus. It's about money. That's why
Papyrus doesn't have the license for Daytona. I hope that you don't think
that Papyrus should try to come up with all the $$$ just so that you can
drive around Talladega with some minor changes and renamed to Daytona.
As Marc mentioned, you better have a big bank account before you think
about making the track yourself. If the lawyers catch you....Because
making the Daytona track, or pretty much any other real track that Papyrus
doesn't have a license to, is illegal.
No, if you made the Daytona track you would not just upsetting Sierra or
Papyrus, but also the people who own the track.
Why can't you just enjoy what you have? Be patient. Maybe Daytona will
change it's mind some day and give the license to Sierra.
I'm sorry if I got a bit insulting, but I don't understand why some people
have to keep on bringing this issue up and also label Papyrus or Sierra as
the bad guys
because they don't have the (or don't want to give out) $$$ for Daytona,
when it has been explained so many times.
Really.
If someone wants to make Daytona and drive around in it, that should be
their
bussiness. I'm sure the line would be drawn if they try to sell it an make
$$$ from it. That would not doubt hurt Sega and infringe the license. Even
distributing it on the internet may not be that great. But if someone
wanted to
make a track & use it at home and make not $$$ on it, that ought to be OK.
Right...
I believe it would be illegal to make the track & have someone sell it.
This is what I am doing. But I just do not see some of your points. I
believe the difference is whether you sell your track & take $$$ from
Sega. IMHO Sega's licensed use of Daytona is a joke.
> It is quite obvious that Sierra/Papyrus arent to concerned with giving

Jim Sokoloff's very informed reply to this (sunday) sums up the
situation very well. As far as the bidding/licensing situation, I am
not fully aware of all the details. But my sense of it is that if it
were within our means to bring Daytona to the customers, we would.
Licensing (particularly with respect to the Daytona track) is neither a
simple nor straight-forward issue. If it were to become possible in the
future, Papyrus would love to include Daytona, as Jim pointed out.
It is not so much a matter of cost, as it is a matter of availability -
and
right now, the rights aren't available, for whatever reason.
ryan smart, engineer for the "Daytona Project" at Papyrus
Hi Jim,
I why just wondering why does SEGA doesn't want to let you release a
Daytona 500 track. Do they have a little vendetta on you ??. Do they
want some big bucks that you can affort ?. If yes so SEGA doesn't have
any non-sense. It's not because SEGA is big and strong that they can do
some idiot things to little compagnies like you. Maybe Sierra will have
the guts (and the money :-] ) to be able you release the track.
Because I know that you have the track for N2 in your office, or it's in
a mid-final phase. You're just waiting for SEGA to use their brain and
say "Hey, those Papyrus guys want's to do the REAL Daytona track. Good
idea!"to release it. Hope I'm not going to far in my opinions. It is
just that Papyrus is just to small to be able to get the Daytona/Indy
track. Small doesn't not mean bad. Sometimes little are better then
big ones (SEGA :-[ ). But that's how the world turn's. Don't stop
your magic work Papyrus,
Thanks a lot,
Good race at the Brickyard, (Old'Indytrack guy)
