The best Daytona 500 yet!

Discussion of the 1997 Daytona 500

Fans debated the 1997 Daytona 500, especially whether Jeff Gordon caused Dale Earnhardt's crash and Earnhardt's return after flipping. They also criticised CBS's coverage and frequent commercials, and Ken Squier's commentary. The thread was largely off-topic for the sim group.

> And thats a fact! This isn't really the place for this...but, here goes... Obviously, you've never seen the 1976 500, the '79 race, and a few others... Too bad that punk a$$ kid had to park Earnhardt in the fence to win it...I know, dale said he pushed up off the corner and bounced into "Jeffy", but I still think Gordon took 'im to the wall... At least a Chevrolet won though...
WOW, that's all I can say. Although I'm fairly new to the sport, I can safely say that this was the most exciting race I've ever seen. I was on my feet for the last twenty laps, pulling big time for Bill Elliott. And I was really impressed with CBS's coverage, except for a few Ken Squier gaffs it was really excellent, I don't remember missing the beginning of any incidents at this race. Now, did anyone make a tape of the race? If so, I'm looking to get a copy of it from someone. If you can help me out, email me. Thanks! Craig Jacobson P.S. Welcome back Awesome Bill!

1988. Bobby Allison 1st, Davey Allison 2nd. Hard to get better than that.
: >And thats a fact! : It sure was. Too bad CBS still doesn't have their act together. Elliot : was in 4th or 5th, they break for a commercial, come back, and now : he's in first. CBS didn't even bother to show the replay! They still : have a lot to learn from the Big Boys. ( ESPN, TNN, etc... ) That isn't the only bug in CBS's program. I kept pressing F2, but usually only got the top 4 or 6 runners. I think only twice was I able to see the full field and where they were running. I was also impressed by Earnhardt. The car flipped over and was all bent up, but he just had his crew tape the spoiler back on and then went out again. Too bad they had that caution at the end of the race, or Terry might have had a shot at the win.

Oh, if you havn't seen the race yet, don't read my other post about the Daytona 500. I didn't say who won, but I still gave a few things away.

Obvious you're a newcomer to the sport. When is it race when the leader (whoever it may be) is the slowest car on the track. You should have watched some of the 1960's races, 429 hemis and drivers with steel balls. Back then slower cars actually got lapped! As for CBS, they didn't do a bad job, but Ken squire knows less about NASCAR racing than I do about launching a space shuttle! (I know a space shuttle goes up, and that's more than Squire knows!) And how about CBS Driver Field. Did anyone notice they had the pole-sitter (Skinner) on the left and Grissom on the right. I suppose that would be right if they ran clockwise! Oh well

ditto. Gordon had the line therefore Earnheart is supposed to let him by. Well being his aggresive self, Earnheart was where he shoulden't have been. Then again, from Earnhearts perspective he MIGHT not have seen gordon having the line so he stood his ground. They both ran out of room and earnhardt was on the outside. Earnheart tapped the wall, NO PROBLEM. Then Jarret freaked out and swerved fliping over earnheart. Watching people from both sides of the argument (Being a Ricky Rudd fan. :) ) Earnheart fans think gordon is a young punk (not true) and gordon fans think Earnheart is a old stinker not willing to give up the glory. Mike, I'm not sure what you mean when you say Ken Squier made a lot of mistakes (from my seat, with 25 people talking all at once, I couldn't hear much of anything anyway). I do know that Ken Squier has been around racing for a very long time...and all racing fans owe him a lot as one of the pioneers in motorsports television. And if you have seen anything with the World Sports logo at the end of it, be aware that this is Ken's company. And besides, if you spent 30 seconds in the TV truck and saw what a madhouse it truly is to produce and call a live race, you would definitely have a much different opinion of what's going on before it hits the air.

True enough. The way it looked on my TV, Gordon was passing Dale, not the other way around. Since when are you are supposed to slow down and let someone pass you? been. Yep, he was really aggressive, running in line like that. Where he shouldn't have been? Gotta agree with you there. I don't know the deal ( thanks for nothing CBS ) with his pit crew, but they had big trouble yesterday. Come in 1st, go out 9th. Come in 3rd, go out 15th. Yep, he was right where he shouldn't have been. He should have been in the lead, and out of the pack, not coming up through it. having the line so he stood his ground. If he had slowed, not that he should have, Jarret would have ass-ended him. Hey, wait, that is what eventually happened, isn't it? How can you call hitting someone who suddenly slows in front of you " Freaking out "? Ever race those AI cars? He didn't freak, he just had nowhere to go. What about when Grissom just ran Schrader into the infield instead of letting him pass? Dale Earnhardt did nothing like that. All he did was hold his line as best he could and keep his foot down. If Jeffy had been able to keep his car on the bottom of the track there would not have been an contact with Dale. Instead his car was up a full car width higher than it should have been, so when Dale bounced off the wall, little Jeffy got tagged. At least part of Dale's car is part of history. See that mark on Jeff's passenger door?

The end was more than a little disappointing. Yellow flags and teamwork wrote the story. Bill Elliott deserved to win (and I'm a Chevy guy). Maybe instead of restrictor plates they should make special narrow tires for the "too fast" tracks. As it is restrictor plate racing is definately a team sport. Bill just didn't have a teammate. bob

One additional note. By getting that close to #3 coming off the turn #24 took the downforce away from Earnhardt creating the PUSH in his car. This forced Earnhardt wide and made him lift to collect his car, and of course Gordon gave him no room (mentioned above). Jeffy was even quoted in today's paper saying that this was what he intended to do. Jeff

I used to give Ken the benefit of the doubt since he was broadcasting NASCAR when NASCAR wasn't cool, but after the race Sunday, I wish CBS would never broadcast another one. Ken was horrible. It seems that the sport has passed him by and he's not willing to relearn it. They would flash to a shot of Earnhardt and Ken would say, "Here comes Earnhardt" as three cars would pass him. He goofed many times in getting names with cars. He tried to tell technical facts he had no clue about. Ken needs to step down and let the masters--Ned Jarrett, Benny Parsons, Eli Gold and the others take over. I wish I had set it up in advance to listen to MRN and turn the volume down on the TV. And what about the year it rained and CBS decided to go to golf? When it stopped raining and they raced, CBS didn't go back. ESPN and TNN will wait all day for a race. Sure, they'll broadcast the previous year's race and keep checking in, but they show the race once it starts.
I also think cbs stands for commercial broadcasting station. is it me or was it show 6 to 8 laps of racing then go to commercial. then come back with a race summary because we missed 10 laps? and squire got to learn who's in what car and he's got to learn when someone loses the draft its just that how many times did he say ohh whats wrong with this one when they just simply got out of the draft. buddy baker has got to go as well. I think he has hit just about every wall in the series. they should stick them too in a booth and let them commentate their own race. If CBS wanted to have good commentating the should hire Mike Joy Benny Parsons and bob jenkins. Ned jarrett is cool but he's talks about Dale Jarrett to much. i know its his son but there are 42 other drivers out there as well...One thing that is great though is the pit reporters. Jerry Punch John Kernan do a hell of a job......
OK, here's more... Earnhardt held his line as "Jeffy" went under him. Dale was where he WAS, not "where he shouldn't have been". Dale ain't gonna back off for nobody; EVERYBODY knows that...:) As they came off the corner, both cars pushed up, and Dale tagged the wall. When he came off the wall, he tagged "Jeffrey", hit the wall agin, and then back down in front of Ernie. Ernie, having no place to go, was hit from behind by "the other Dale", Jarrett then sent Ernie into Earnhardt. Irvan's car sent the 3 spinning wildly, and the way that the air got under Earnhardt just sent him up and over Ernie. Too bad "Jeffy" didn't get caught up in it like Irvan and Jarrett. About the Grissom/Schrader thing: Grissom just flat mirror-drove Schrader to the grass. By the time he tried get back up in the groove, it was too late. Schrader's LR got down off the track and it turned him up into Grissom. It was all Grissom's fault; he should have let Kenny go by. As far as Elliott: I was pulling for him and the 3. We saw the old Awesome Bill on Sunday; mixing it up. He was pretty much all alone against the team cars of Hendrick and Childress.

> Too bad CBS still doesn't have their act together. Apologies for getting off topic here but this was the first time I've gotten to see the 500 live (I live in the UK). Whilst it was a great race it was, IMHO, totally ruined by the constant breaks for adverts (or "commercials" if you prefer <g>). Toward the end it was plain ludicrous with more breaks than racing. Why don't all you US fans start writing to the companies that advertise during these breaks and tell them that you don't appreciate this sort of coverage and that you won't buy their products if they continue to buy advertising time whilst CBS or whoever show too many adverts. Enough people write to them and they will take note and so will CBS as they won't be able to sell the advertising time! Adverts during yellows are fine and the occasional one if there is a very long green period maybe, but 5 minutes of adverts every 10 minutes is a farce :(( If ITV have more than two advert breaks during a F1 race this season I will be writing to the advertisers and complaining. > The way it looked on my TV, Gordon was passing Dale, not the other way > around. Since when are you are supposed to slow down and let someone pass > you? Since your heading for the wall! Gordon was running his "own" line that gave Earnhart a little pinch. Still he gave earnhart enough room and Earnhart simply refused to let of the throttle or give up the position and payed for it by hitting the wall. After bouncing off the wall he bumped Gordon and Gordon said it was all he could do to keep outa Earnhart's way. Earnhart was well aware of Gordon's position and knew he was clearly on the inside and pinching. Again, he shoulda checked up and since he didnt he put himself outa the race by tagging the wall. You sound like your an anaylist on "where" the best line is to run a Nascar on a superspeedway! "where it shoulda been"?! Gimme a break. Gordon was racing a "clean" line and was pinching the outside car(Earnhart) like any good driver does to insure the pass. Earnhart evidently did NOT want to lose the position and gambled his line. The gamble didnt fly and he brushed the wall and almost took Gordon out! If Gordon hadnt controlled his car properly after the tap, he'd have been takin out. If you look closely at what really happened, you'll see that Gordon did not cause the accident. After Earnhart brushed the wall he had to check up to maintain control and Jarret didnt check up in time and got up under the 3 car and flipped ole' "Iron Head". Look at it a little closer, its called "replay"! -David Gary-

Ok, my 2 cents worth: about 2 laps before Earnhardt's crash (2-5 laps, OK?) the announcer reported that DE was complaining that his car was loose. as there were about 10 laps to go (about?), this denotes the point where most drivers "make their move" to try to get past everybody else to get a win (especially Daytona, where reporters said all day "It's tough to pass here") As I watched the replays, I did notice J.Gordon never touched Earnhardt's car (he did get damn close, tho!), so I'll speculate the following: (1). DE made the mistake of complaining of being loose. (2). "someone" from the #24 crew overheard the complaint and informed Gordon's spotter. (3). Gordon's spotter informed JG that, and JG took advantage of the situation by 'taking the air off the 3 car spoiler' which put DE into the wall in the first place. (4). the 88 car, saw the 3 car getting loose, so 'helped' the spin by giving a little nudge. What DJ didn't expect, is that he'd get involved as much as he did. (He may be a good driver, he isn't that good!) Yes, I feel DJ could have avoided touching DE...ever hear of "brakes" -- I didn't say to lock them up, he could have slowed and allowed DE to correct his fishtailing. (5). The 28 car may have been able to avoid losing his hood the same way. I don't think I would have lifted in his case, either tho... Which only goes to re-affirm my belief that DE is a true sportsman after listening to his post-race interview as to why he got back into his car to finish the race. Unlike Ken Squire.. -- ::::::::#########::::::::::David Burton aka Vetteracer :########################::http://www.rust.net/~daland ########################:::"You have to first finish, :::::::#########:::::::::::before finishing first" <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Damn it, I wasn't going to continue this discussion in this newsgroup, but... : Ok, my 2 cents worth: : about 2 laps before Earnhardt's crash (2-5 laps, OK?) the announcer : reported that DE was complaining that his car was loose. <snip> : As I watched the replays, I did notice J.Gordon never touched : Earnhardt's car (he did get damn close, tho!), so I'll speculate the : following: : (1). DE made the mistake of complaining of being loose. : (2). "someone" from the #24 crew overheard the complaint and : informed Gordon's spotter. : (3). Gordon's spotter informed JG that, and JG took advantage : of the situation by 'taking the air off the 3 car spoiler' which put : DE into the wall in the first place. All week long it was known to everybody and anybody that Dale's car got loose whenever a car was under him or directly behind him. This was how his car was set up. I think he even mentioned it during the twin 125's. : (4). the 88 car, saw the 3 car getting loose, so 'helped' the : spin by giving a little nudge. What DJ didn't expect, is that he'd : get involved as much as he did. (He may be a good driver, he isn't : that good!) Yes, I feel DJ could have avoided touching DE...ever hear : of "brakes" -- I didn't say to lock them up, he could have slowed and : allowed DE to correct his fishtailing. No WAY. Jarrett was too close & too boxed in to do anything but what he did, let off the gas. This caused Ernie to push him into Ironhead. Same goes for Ernie. : (5). The 28 car may have been able to avoid losing his hood : the same way. I don't think I would have lifted in his case, either : tho... By then it was too late, the only way Ernie could have avoided touching Earnhardt was to have Scotty "beam his car up" immediately! : Which only goes to re-affirm my belief that DE is a true sportsman : after listening to his post-race interview as to why he got back into : his car to finish the race. Everything everybody and anybody has been saying about this is pure speculation (mine included). However, it's usually been heavily clouded by each posters' "favorite" driver (or hated driver). It was just one of those racing deals! It was just too frightening to see, for me. We came close to having some severe injuries or even a death out of this one. Thanks to NASCAR, they build some mighty safe cars out there. I wonder if Earnhardt sat more upright, like most drivers, if he would have been injuried. Gordon did what he felt he had to do, I am pretty sure that he knew he would loosen up Earnhardt's car. But, I really doubt that he knew his own car would drift up as much as it did. I am sure he had no desire to see Earnhardt wreck. Just as I am sure that Earnhardt has never wanted to "wreck" anybody that he has pulled the same stunt on many times in the past. (I'm serious here, this isn't a tongue-in-cheek statement.) This is NASCAR racing we are talking about, not some Sunday afternoon quilting party. -- **************************** Michael E. I agree with you. Dale Earnhardt is my favorite driver, but it was just racing. I don't think Gordon did anything intentional to wreck Ironhead. I read an article in Stock Car Racing magaizine about the positioning of the seat in stock cars from Jeff Burton. He is fanatical about the positioning of his seat and his belts because he broke his back in a Late Model because his belts were mounted above his shoulders. He stated that the lower you were in the seat the better off you were. Also, Earnhardt's car was sent to Hopkins and he said the frame wasn't bent. Only one bar has to be fixed and they are going to use the car again.WOW!!! Kerry Grant

>If ITV have more than two advert breaks during a F1 race this season I >will be writing to the advertisers and complaining. Hi Richard, Apparently ITV are to have five two minute breaks during each Grand Prix, though they say they'll show any action that was missed straight after the break, with the appropriate commentary. They also said they would try take breaks at times that didn't interfere with routine pitstops etc., so the director will have the choice of when to take a break, rather than them being at set times. We'll see next month... Mark 'Damon' Gill "Only rock can save us now!" http://gillcomp.demon.co.uk/damon.htm O==-O\

DJ was being pushed by the 28 car when he hit DE..... This is Daytona...if you lift you are watching the pack leave you. DJ and EE were in wrong place at the wrong time. JG is know for driving up under people and getting them loose. DJ is not... As for DE...he had better not touch the 43 car this weekend. On Thu, 20 Feb 1997 01:18:19 +0000, Mark Gill >Apparently ITV are to have five two minute breaks during each Grand >Prix, Bummer :(( Looks like some advertisers are going to get letters then... So what about the action that is missed because they are showing the action we've just missed ;-) F1 races may be pretty boring these days, but the whole point about seeing something live is because you don't know what is going to happen. Any delayed action and the whole effect is ruined IMHO. If I want to watch videos, I'll video the race and fast forward through the boring bits myself. Why else do we get up at such ungodly hours to watch the Australian & Japanese races live rather than the re-runs? Cheers, Richard

Let's see........ If Jeff gets close and takes the air off Dale and DON'T touch him it's called pushing him, If Dale does it, It's called racing? I watched the same race and I seen good hard racing though out the whole race. And that is racing not pushing. Jarrett and Irvan didn't have a chance to react to the problem ahead. sorry to drag this on, but I just noticed the reply... <snip> I hate to inform you . DE is far from my favorite driver, and JG isn't in my top 20 list either, but I do acknowledge talent and sportsmanship. Sorry, I disagree here...his rookie year ended a few years ago. he should know (by now, especially after the talladega race where he and RC got together and Craven took out the fence and Schraeder did cartwheels along the back stretch) sure. ok. you're entitled to your opinion. which is why I feel the way I do. it would be one thing if these 'accidents' were caused by rookies making rookie mistakes, but Winston Cup Champions? Sorry, I don't think so. --John Melair They're not bugs! >DJ was being pushed by the 28 car when he hit DE..... this is possibly true, I won't deny it, because I haven't seen many replays from another perspective. You care to tell me that if you were doing some low-altitude flying at about 200 MPH and a car in front of you starts to spin out, you wouldn't lift? You'd take a chance on wrecking your car at Daytona? where aerodynamics take a significant play in your top speed? You can't win from the back of the pack (well, almost...RC did a good job finishing 3rd -- but not from the back that late in the race) nor can you win with significant damage to the car. DJ lost out in either case. EE is too, remember? I can't imagine why people think i'm a DE fan! I'm not! I just like to recognize talent (hey, deny it. 7 championships are not won by luck) ;) >>Opinions still welcomed via email, that address again is --John Melair They're not bugs!
