Has anyone any idea what the comparitive figures for speeds running our faves such as N2 and GP2 are for the Pentium Pro 200 compared to the P166 or P200. I'm thinking of upgrading to one of the two from my ageing P90 and as these games are my most played (plus flight sims) - is the Pro worth getting over a P166 or 200? I will also get the obligatory 3D card too - any pointers yet on future support - the Verite chip is used by Papy, but any idea whether Geoff will support it in any future games or upgrade to GP2? Hi! Is your gp2 framerate estimate with all mirror textures on? I would like to know as I am planning to purchase a config just like yours. Thanks in advance!

Hate to disagree, but I wouldn't buy anything but a Pentium Pro now. Sure, the PP200 will run about 180mgz in DOS, but in windows, it'll far outperform a classic 200. And eventually, it'll all be 32 bit anyway, so why buy for the past? The Pent Pro will give you better performance now in your DOS games (not exponentially, but still better), and dramatically better performance in Windows on that side.

I would say get a P166, because from what I have read and been told a P200Pro doesn't run games as well as a regular P166 or P200, the pro is optimized for 32bit apps, and gp2 is a 16bit app, you can get a fast video card with a p166 like I have and the game runs very smoothly. I run with everything on except sky, and get 19.6 frames a sec, with an est of 21.6 on my P166 with 32 meg ram and 4mb Matrox Mill. The P200 is only about 9-12% faster then a P166 according to pc computing. But its about 100-200 more then a P166.
My PPro 200 blows away my P200 for anything I run, NT, Win95, Nascar2, etc. Both have 3d cards and similar disk. Regards, ---Wayne.

Well my friend has a P200 pro and it runs every game he has every gotten for it like crap, my P166 runs gp2 and nascar way better, and he has 32megs ram 4 mb video card monster 3d 8 speed cd-rom and it still blows chunks! When we called intel to find out way it sucked so much they told us we were better off running games on regular P166's and P200's not a pro.

FWIW, GP2 is 32-bit, that's the 4GW thing. I have the exact same setup, Triton II chipset, 512K burst, and I ain't getting that with track textures on. What are your mirror settings? Texturing? Jeff

You probably need the utility "Fastvid" to speed up the video performance. Search for it on the Net. I have seen a P133 run like a 486DX 33. There is an obvious problem. First thing is to make sure the bios is all setup. Best place to start for a speed increase. We soon had it all humming along nicely.. Shane Lansky Hobart,Tasmania Australia

Pentium Pro's work best with "true 32-bit" operating systems. Windows 95 is a mixture of both 16bit/32bit, and DOS is 16bit. Unless you are running Windows NT (or LINUX I guess), most of the time the Pentium Pro's will be slower than a regular Pentium. If you are using Windows 95, Windows 3.1, or DOS, then get a regular Pentium 200. If you are using Windows NT, then get a Pentium Pro 200. The Pentium Pro itself isn't crap, you just have to use it with the right operating system.
Any game that runs under DOS6GW (most of them) don't use DOS for any time-critical functions and are running in a 32-bit environment for all practical purposes. You simply need to run "fastvid" during bootup to enable write-combining to your video card. At that point, the Pro will be significantly faster than the equivalent Pentium. Check the Quake benchmark page for verification. Fastvid also works with WIN95. It needs to be run in your autoexec.bat file before W95 is invoked. -- --------------- Scott Pritchett

Where can I find Fastvid??

Not at all true. A Pentium Pro will almost always be faster than a similar megahertz pentium irrespective of the operating system. I can provide benchmarks to show that this is the case.
