Anyone ever notice that the AI cars race much quicker than their
qualifiying times even near the beginning of the race with full tanks of
gas? In reality, I thought qualifying times were always faster than what
is actually achievable during a Nascar race. Can anyone set me straight on
this (game vs. real life)?
Thanks.

They will run slower in a race UNLESS they are drafting like at Dega where
they can pick up 2 to 3 mph. If u have watched Nascar lately, you will
notice that at the super speedways each team is trying to get the fluids
(oil-trans/differential lube) as hot as possible before qualifying hoping
to further lessen drag by thinning the fluids. I would imagine that a 5th
or 6th race lap would be very close to a qual lap since the fluids are even
hotter by that time. Just my 2 cents and no flames if I'm wrong...just my
OPINION. :)

}well nascar2 is setup to qualify with 22 gallons so at the start your

}.
Yes, I know N2 is setup to qualify with 22 gallons. But why do the AI cars
run faster under racing condtions. I qualified in the middle of the pack
at Rockingham (or was it another, hmmm...doesn't matter) and I started to
turn the very lap times that I qualified at (since I used the same setup).
But then the AI cars started to pass me like I was 1-2 seconds off of pace,
which I wasn't. It was clear that the AI cars actually were turning faster
lap times than they qualified at.
In real life, isn't a qualifying lap a tad faster than what they can run in
a race (since they taped off the front grill, etc.)? I have seen one where
they were running near qualifying times because they were drafting on a
super speedway.

On most tracks, qualifying times are faster than race times, the exceptions
being the restrictor plate tracks (Daytona and Talladega) where drafting
allows the cars to travel faster during the race.
As far as N2 is concerned, I know that Papyrus worked on balancing the AI
race speeds and qual speeds to those of the human player. Without the added
advantage of less fuel in the tank (ala NASCAR 1), it's much harder to put
together a decent qualifying lap. I typically run faster laps during the
race (once the tires are heated up) than I do in qualifying.
