Which OS for GP2?

Does GP2 run significantly better under Dos than under Windows 95? I'm getting a new computer soon and am undecided on whether I will put Windows 95 or Win 3.11 + Dos 6 on it. According to the manual, it may perform poorly with Windows 95. If this is the case, I would consider it a point in favor of sticking with Dos and 3.11, rather than going to Windows 95. I would appreciate hearing any comments on how GP2 runs under different operating systems. Please post your thoughts. Thanks. Brian
Go for Win 95 - much better than Win 3.1 once you get used to it. To run GP2, though, you will need to (re)boot into Win 95's MS-DOS mode. The problems referred to in the manual are if you try & run it in a DOS box from within Win 95. Cheers, Richard

says... Unless you get a pentium 3000 with 128 megs ram..win95 is NOT a games playing platform... trying to decide an os....do it the easy way and use all 3!!!!!!!!
I run GP2 on a P-166 32mg HX 3dblaster,and the ***y thing kept crashing in dos 7.0(Win95),so now I boot up in 6.22 <g> no more problem!! Phil -- Don't look back, they may be gaining on you !

Uhmmm...not necessarily. I have a P166 with 64MB, and under Win95 GUI DOS games run fine (those that support the ability to do so, ie Nascar2 demo, GP2, NHL97), however, some games require a re-boot to dos-prompt (Nascar). Don't confuse "Win95 sux" with actually booting to command prompt only (F8 - option 6 at boot up). At command prompt only, I haven't had one OS-related problem with DOS 7.0. I believe GP2 manual was stating that GP2 may perform "poorly under Win95" as the GUI DOS session, and that is probably true for machines in the low-end (sub 133MHz, and less than 32MB), but as far as re-booting to DOS, it runs fine. You should be able to run > with better graphics details or a higher frame-rate if you reboot into > MS-DOS mode. I found a bigger performance hit in the menus than the game, but yes - even allowing 16mb DPMI memory and preventing the dos game from detecting '95, I had an occupancy increase of 30-40%. Run from MSDOS-Mode and all will be fine. Jet

On MY p166 32 Mb, I don't experience any problems running GP2 from within Win95. It might be a little slower, but I never really checked: I prefer the ease of use against a small gain in performance. I just boot to my previous version of DOS (6.22) and play under that. That's what the boot menu under Win95 is for. I never play DOS games under the 95 enviornment. --

Hello all: Ok, I did the next and worked really well!!! The last week I bought a new PC with a P166Mhz, then asked a technician (a friend of mine), for the best installation and he told me that the best way was to leave entirely the old DOS 6.22 that I always used. So when I started to upload W95 the program ask me If I wanted to leave the old DOS version I said yes and now when I start the PC through F8 I have the choice to run the old DOS, with all the advantages that this represents. Anyway as Jo said the performance in a P166 (at least) dont suffer, I tested the game running in the old DOS and in WIN DOS mode and only one point in the speed test was lost in my video card.
