Photo of car wrapped around a tree debunked
A photo of a car wrapped around a tree, captioned as a 155 mph Autobahn crash, was shared. Posters doubted it, noting the car was a Ford Escort, and Ian Riches linked a source saying it happened in the UK and the driver survived.

Ouch. The tree looks unscathed at 155 mph. Not too sure that travelling at a
sensible speed limit as the site suggests would have helped against that
tree, although arguably he wouldn't have hit in the first place depending
upon the circumstances that caused the accident.
On the same site is this pic of a tax disc inspector at work:

real :(

Is the Auto Baum some sort of tree?

No, it's the Autobahn (highway), and funny enough "Baum" means "Tree"...

That's crumple zones for ya... hit that tree with a 1955 Buick and you'll be

No, it's a freudian slip.

I know. =)
Ouch! I have been on the Autobahn once; it was a bus for my high-school
tour. (Wheeeee) We got pulled over and told to exit because the driver
was going to slow. It was a Mercedes bus though... :) I did see a
Ferrari BB512 zip by at one point; that was cool.
I'm trying to figure out what kind of car it is (was) but can't.
In the second pic there seems to be some letters on the back-left but I
can't read them. My initial guess was a BMW 850 but I doubt it.

I think the photo has been debunked as another internet hoax. It originally
came out about a year ago, and shortly after it came out somebody somewhere
wrote a far too detailed analysis of it. The short version - it's an
Escort. Which almost certainly will not do 155 mph. Also that's not that
big a tree, how can there possibly be so much damage to the car and so
little damage to the tree? A very clever hoax.

I don't think slapping stickers all over your car increases the
performance by that much.
Have you ever seen how little damage there is to a tree after it's been
whomped by a vehicle?
Apart from torn bark, the trunk of a tree that is no more than 300mm in
diameter will be unscathed if collected by a modern vehicle in a side-on
impact.
In fact, the tree will withstand the impact slightly better than a timber
power pole of the same diameter as the living wood has more resilience and
shock-absorbing qualities.
I have seen an immature Plane Tree with a Mercedes 300 sedan folded around
it and all four occupants were dead on impact.
The car had to be prised apart to get it off the tree and most of the damage
to the trunk of the tree was done during that operation.

You mean like this? http://fun-witze.piranho.com/bilder/m09.jpg
In article <pBHJc.261549$[email hidden]>,
[email hidden] says...
A stock Escort Cosworth will only do 140mph maximum.

And the tree (which was obviously at fault here) would be no more.
Don McCorkle
I seriously doubt that that car would ever reach 155 mph. (248km/h!)
(whats this got to do with r.a.s anyway - Mr. CEO :o)

When I was in the army, three guys in my bataloin (sp?) killed themselfs in
an old Opel Ascona. They "exited" the road at arpund 100mph - hit a tree
that was about a foot+ thick - which they chopped down like a thoothpick
before they stopped in another.
That photo's got to ba a hoax imho - not to mention the caption.

Not 155mph and not on the autobahn.
It was apparently a Ford Escort, somewhere in the UK, and the driver
survived.

Well spotted, Eldred. I was trying to work out where the driver would have
been. No wonder I couldn't work it out!
That was MY question!

Obvious officer material Jan. ;)
http://www.wreckedexotics.com/ for some that will make you cry...but not if you
have enough to own them in the first place I guess...
Artillery. We did the shelling :o)
(Actually all I did was sit inside APC and pushed buttons on a computer :o)

Ah...an page full of BS. You will get run over doing the speed limit in
the US, unless conditions are limiting traffic speed. I learned to
drive in Germany, but driving in the US is far scarier.
