NFS-SE - Viper 6th gear?

I was playing NFS-SE the other day and got up to 160 in the Viper (top speed). When I hit the "shift-up" button, the car went up to 6th gear, but my speed started to decrease. 6th gear is the double overdrive, and the RPMs are too low to reach top speed. Many cars reach their topspeed in the gear next to the highest one. ie many 5-speeds reach topspeed in 4th, 6-speeds in 5th. Reason is top gear is an overdrive designed for comfortable cruising at low rpm. I have a 6-speed tranmission myself and can attest to the game being accurate in this regard. However, the Viper should exceed 160mph going downhill... -- Markus

Although I've never had the pleasure of driving a Dodge Viper, I think you'll find there's nothing 'wrong'. The 6th gear on the Viper is for reduced engine speed at high road speeds, and should not be considered a 'power' or 'sport' gear. Put simply, there's no need to use 6th gear in NFS. This rule does not apply to some of the other 6 speed cars (Supra, 911). The ZR1, although I never drive it, is (I presume) the same - 6th gear is redundant. Hope this helps. Cheers, Dan

To put it *technically*, the engine in the Viper does not put out enough power in 6th at 160mph to overcome the forces of friction and drag, and so slows down. 5th gear ups the revs and provides enough power to maintain a speed of 160. Kinda sounds ridiculous, doesn't it - "the engine in the Viper does not put out enough power...." :-)) Hope this helps. Cheers, Dan

Welcome to real-world. On cars equipped with six speed transmissions, fifth gear is the last "speed gear"....your highest speed will come from fifth, not sixth. Sixth is...well...a novelty. Its designed simply to maintain a crusing speed while lowering your RPM, and thusly...your gas usage...when you back off the throttle. Brant
Intelligent American engineering...this is what the real car does. The sixth gear is useless for driving--it was apparently added for fuel economy rating purposes only. ============================================================================ == ============================================================================ ==

What's up there? >> Sixth gear shifts the Viper out of its power band, just like in real life. 6th gear is an overdrive gear designed to help the massive 8.0L engine get better milage on the freeway. 5th gear is the Viper's top speed gear. I had NFS, and did the tournament, got the Vegas track, etc.. I now have NFS SE, and again won the tournament, but NO NEW track! What gives!?!?! Second, is there a way to play via network over the internet?? What about Nascar2 (I was thinking of buying it). Thanks in advance! ...Sam BTW: The Viper will go over 200 mph in 6th on the VEGAS track for NFS...
