Flame warTeen who posted the pirated Indy track defends himself

A 16-year-old Canadian claimed credit for uploading the copyrighted Indianapolis track and argued that US rules did not apply to him. Regulars explained copyright law and newsgroup etiquette, while he complained of mail-bombing and claimed Sierra was deleting posts. The thread became a pile-on.

The problem(s) are both large, and small. First the small one. You, or whoever, posted a binary file in a non-binary newsgroup. And to make it worse, the file you posted is copyrighted. This has since been corrected by those whose job that is, but if I am not mistaken, the newsgroup ( R.A.S. ) was served notice not to do this again. Now, I don't know what they can do, if anything, but I did hear something about the possible dissolution of this newsgroup if it continues. No friends will be made if that happens. To quote Richard himself, he is a: business in Savannah, GA. This statement is still being debated though. Pretty bad attitude for a VP of anything. Most likely he/she is a ***ager whose actions are not being monitored closely enough. before Who knows? Perhaps someone dropped him on his head repeatedly as a small child. Don't know, wasn't there. :-) Actually, I started giving him trouble because I could not ( and still can't ) believe that someone would come on an international newsgroup and admit to having in his possession an illegal copy of a the IMS expansion pack. Then to ask for help on how to use it. As everyone here knows, Papyrus, the creator of the software, monitors this newsgroup pretty closely. Guess they know where several illegal copies are now. And then the tone of his replies, to others as well as to me, didn't set too well. Toilet mouths have no place here. Now the larger problem : I am sorry, but I must profess ignorance of your laws. Are there no copyright laws in your country? Or does Canada just not honor those of the U.S.? Since NAFTA is a reality, I would have thought that they did. Perhaps not. I am sure that there are those that do. Since the IMS track is almost impossible to get legally, what you did, however I feel about it, was a godsend to a number of people. It is just that only one of them was careless enough to admit having gotten it! Some of us respect the laws of our country, some of us don't. Some of us don't know what they are.
Hey little Robbie, are you every going to let this thread die? Oh yeah if i'm such a bad guy why have I gotten at least thirty e-mails from readers of this newsgroup requesting I e-mail them a copy? I have gotten exactly 2 negative e-mails attacking me while I have gotten ten saying you are just pissed that you paid full price and we got it free. I'm still looking forward to the day you look me up in the Savannah phone directory. Here's a hint. Look under the M's for Manning!! On second thought maybe I should look you up Your friend, Richard

NEWS FLASH: Vice President for (company name here) arrested early this morning for stalking a local man over an argument on a Interent Usenet group relating to a computer video game. Richard Manning has been detained and is awaiting trial in the county jail under close watch by a team of psychiatrists. His lawyer refuses to answer any questions except to say "this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. What a complete moron." More details as they become available. Again, I couldn't resist :) David Range

I can't help but feel pseudo-responsible for this *fiasco*. It was MY response post to a newbie question regarding the Brickyard track that had triggered YMENARD's action of uploading the illegal binary. I want to make a few things clear. A. I do not know YMENARD or R Manning. B. I have a legal copy of Indianapolis, (found at a Wal-Mart bargain bin) and I have NEVER transmitted it over the Net. C. I do not condone software piracy. I am not a hacker or pirate, just a simple die hard gamer that has paid for every game currently on his HD. D. I would HATE to see rec.autos.simulators dissolve because of user's ignorance of the law.
Steve Smith 17 Nov 1996#344025
You are a class A f*ckwit :) Do you think that Canada doesn't have any laws related to copyright? All you've done is to start a flame war about posting binaries in non- binary groups and on copyright issues. I hope that someone reports you to your ISP and gets your account terminated.

Hi all you Birckyard fans, I was wondering something. Who is on my side?? Richard Manning or Robert Johnson. One has the track legally, the other not?? Who's who?? You could also , each of one, send me a post or E-Mail on your position. Thanks a lot. REMEMBER, I'm the first that posted it, and I feel free that everybody else could post it. If a web page want's to put it, it's ok. But just put my name in the description of the track(ex: Yves Menard (real name) had the guts of posting it, so thanks him because it would not be there if he ain't post it at first!!!) //// O O Go RubensB., go J.Gordon, go J.Villeneuve, go G.Moore!! < And all you that thinks that Jacques Villeneuve is --- from Canada, your right!! Hi all you Brickyard fans, Hope your all playing day and night on the new track. If some people missed the post E-mail me, I would be happy to send it to you. It's only 382 kb. If people have some problems with the track E-mail me on the problem. And also, I'm not in jail now. I think that Sierra guys or Indianapolis Motor Speedway guys don't pay any more attention to an old track that simracing people wan't to play with. I did not have a E-mail or a post from them (hope not!!). Also, I was wondering if Adam Levesque (Nascar2 guy) is French. I think that he lives near Boston so we never know. Sierra said to a web site (Don't remember the name) that had Las Vegas and Mantorp track to not publish them any more. I think it's because they are New track, not from an old existent track like Indy. So thanks to all that have it and good race, REMEMBER, I'm the first that posted it, and I feel free that everybody else could post it. EVERYBODY READ THIS IMPORTANT, I think Sierra is controling this Newsgroup. She deletes Post that she does not want. Like here's an exemple. IN Netscape 3.0 I can not find any message about the Indianapolis track, or the Nascar2sucks. Hope it's not real because ther's a problem here!!! The Blue ribbon speech could make a good paper for this. Anyway who's in charge ofd this Newsgroup???. <paranoid stuff cut> Please, please just stop. The only Sierra I ever had any contact with is a Cutlass Ceirra, and it came in contact with my truck. The truck and I won. Have a paranoid day.

shooting through ***space: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ In deference to your difficulty with English, I won't touch this one with a ten-foot pole. In deference to your age, I won't try to explain the intricacies of international copyright law. Try thinking of it as you going out and robbing a bank and then handing out the cash to people to "MAKE [them] HAPPY". Robin Hood is a romantic concept, but it is pretty impractical in real life. -- SimRacing Online Webmaster http://www.simracing.com/ Hawaii: IWCCCARS

Wrong! Learn about usenet before killing it for the rest of us. No one is "in charge" of this newsgroup. If anyone is issuing cancels for discussion topics then that is a very serious breach of netiquette. I have seen no evidence of it in this ng. _However_ there are some people out there who do automatic scans for large binaries in unmoderated, non-alt groups. If they find them, they issue bincancels that ISPs may, or may not, choose to honour. Most do, as they accept that large binaries have no place in discussion newsgroups. So face it, most of the people reading this ng never even saw your ill advised attempts to pirate the IMS track. This newsgroup IS NOT A PLACE FOR DISTRIBUTING BINARIES. If you really feel the need to do so, find an alternative method. Richard

Look up paranoid in the dictionary. Beside the definition, is a picture, I assume that's you? If that isn't enough, just go back and check the messages you have written. P.S. Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't out to get you! Have a Silent Stalker Day!

Most 16 yearolds know the difference between right and wrong. So, your age is no excuse. and wanted to make people HAPPY. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY I have nothing against making people happy. Want to make them happy? Send them cash, or buy them a puppy. Stealing, then saying it was because you wanted to make others happy, is pretty stupid. What about the people you stole the game from? You think it made them happy? Yes, please do. Afternoons here are pretty slow, and I need something to amuse me. Want to know where your biggest supporters are? Go look at a prision video. They are the big fat dudes waiting for you to drop the soap. Hey!! They just want to be happy!
