I have just installed Network Q RAC rally and although it works not too
bad in Win 95, I can't get it to run properly in DOS. The graphics keep
locking up and everything seems to happen much slower, almost as if there
is insufficient memory, I'm running it on a P100 with 24meg RAM I've tried
all three install options but still the same problem. also in Windows the
sound starts breaking up after about 2 or 3 stages of the Rally.- any
ideas
TIA
Mark

I installed RAC network Q rally in DOS originally and then re-installed
it in Win95 and the music on the into was braking up but everything else
was fine.

I heartily agree with all your points, I bought the game because I was
looking for something that came close to sega rally.
RAC Rally feels totally unrealistic, the cars skate about like they're
on castors, and have as much realism as a shopping trolley.
Every other racing simulator/game I've tried has VGA support. RAC Rally
doesn't. I have a 120mhz Pentium, and It still doesn't refresh very
well.
Europress Really need to get their act together, If you look at their
Support BBS page, their are unbeleivable problems posted.
Another problem is that the program requires too much conventional
memory. You end up removing sound drivers etc to make the thing work.
At the end of the day Europress having released an unsuitable product,
that quite obviously was not beta tested correctly (On anything smaller
than a Pentium Pro 200).
Sort it out Europress, and sort out a patch.
By the way, the removed my messages from their BBS. Embarrissing if you
can't take critisizm

I tried the game on a pentium 166 & 200.
While it works good under a P166 it blasts off with a P200 (+ Matrox
Millenium)
I hadnt problems with DOS memory though I have SCSI drivers installed
The driving itself becomes unrealistic if you e.g. try to initiate a drift
using braking
and steering => it isnt possible ....
I'm also looking forward to a patch ......

I n reply to recent postings about the "playability" of RAC rally
may I have my twopenneth.
I run my full version on a 133 clocked at 150 , 32 MB , Matrox Mill
2MB ,SB 16 and a sammy 17GLI.
The frame rate seems to be far in excess of Indycar & GP2.To
coin a phrase it goes like shit of a shovel!.I've had more lockups
with GP2 than I can remember, not one with "Rally".
On the point of realism surely the point of PC *** is to have
a bit of fun ? If I wanted smack on realism I'd go on one of those
"Rally Weekends" you can pay for.
Maybe a Newsgroup split is required rec.autos.sim.moaners?
(says he donning flameproof overalls)
Don't forget life's short have a laugh while you can.
Regards
Stu.

RALLY only one car is being modelled at a time, whereas GP2 has to model 28
cars on the track at a time - all of which also have to "interact" with
each other
(passing, slipstreaming, crashing into each other). I think that this
modelling
is a lot more processor intensive than drawing the graphics. RALLY only
has to move the scenery past the car at a reasonable rate which is fairly
simple. GP2 is doing that as well as drawing the other cars and the
modelling.
In summary I think GP2 is doing a hell of a lot more work than RALLY and so
runs slower.

GP2 is a simulator, not just another no-brain racing game with
great graphics but no feel that you're actually driving a car.
Although Need for Speed isn't a rally simulation, I think it's still
the closest you can get to the feeling of driving a car on a twisty
road. RAC has good frame rate on my P100, but it doesn't make that
repetitive scenery and corners feel like a real road at all.
GP2 with all it's slowness when too much graphics detail is on
is still the best simulator, but you can always hope they will
make a special version for some of those new 3D cards 8)
