The coverage of this Pocono race is pathetic. Tony just spun and we watch
how many replays, then useless commentary. Then we watch the pit stops then
we watch more replays and useless commentary and finally it goes green
again. We get to watch 2 green flag laps then a fn commercial. After 3+
minutes of commercial it comes back to yet another yellow flag for debris on
the track and we missed the lead change to boot. Jeeeez, the actual race
plays second fiddle..
Rinse repeat....

Complaints about NBC's Pocono NASCAR coverage
Mitch_A vented about NBC's coverage of the Pocono race, with constant replays and commercials causing viewers to miss lead changes. Others recalled delayed coverage on ABC's Wide World of Sports, recommended TiVo, criticised NASCAR TrackPass, and one poster said the topic belonged elsewhere.

well after the actual race, we'd see about 15 minutes of highlights on
ABC's Wide World of Sports...but we'd have to wait, often months, for the
coverage, and THEN, we'd also have to endure 30 to 40 minutes of Cliff
Diving from Acapucalo and World Cup Give Up To Jean-Claude Killy Skiing
coverage.
I never even knew Nascar raced on Short Tracks til ESPN was invented.
The Great Pacific Northwest of the USA is a desert for racing.

The MizLou network was the best, even before ESPN.

I feel for you Mitch. Got NASN here recently. They stay on an in-car shot
during what appear to be endless commercials breaks. It spoils the coverage
a little over here but it must be a whole lot worse for you guys over there.

coverage to motorsports (besides the annual tedium of the Indianapolis
500) was when someone -- or better yet, ABC seemed to think, LOTS of
someones -- got killed. One of the earliest GP events I can remember
actually getting TV air time was the 1961 Italian GP, when Von Trips and
eleven spectators died, and America got its first World Champion. ABC's
coverage was FAR less about Phil Hill than it was endless grainy replays
of Von Trips caroming off Clark and into the spectator fencing. Even
their Indy coverage dwelt on the ghoulish, exemplified by the tragic
inferno of 1964 that claimed the veteran Eddie Sachs and the great road
racer and Indy first-timer Dave MacDonald. That clip must hold some kind
of record for replays. TV is so much more civilized now...

Gosh, how I've missed watching cliff diving. Those were the days.
Bill
I have to agree with everyone......the old days of racing coverage on TV was
either non-existent, or was delayed by weeks before ABC WWoS coverage. I
even remember laying on the floor with my mom when I was a kid, and
listening to the Indy-500 on the radio......with no TV coverage (even
delayed/tapped).
But, that was then and this is now!
So I have to agree with Mitch that I didn't think today's Pocono coverage
was up to par, either!
I generally don't watch much past the pre-race and the opening laps, then
listen and work in the shop or something.....until the final 50 laps or so!
And, that's pretty much what I did today and I still noticed the coverage
wasn't very good. What happened to all the in-car cameras? I don't recall
very many shots today from them and those are by far the best coverage you
can get, especially at a long track like Pocono. I also think the
commentary from the main booth isn't up to par with FOX, even though Benny
and Wally have a lot of racing experience, so I really don't understand why
this is.
I also don't like the numerous times TNT uses this, "let's take you through
the field" sequence. It's mostly useless information that is old by the
time you hear it, and they do it way too often, IMHO. Who cares who is
loose and who is tight? Every car on the track is something......and those
are the only two choices! And chances are, only the leader at the moment
has got a balanced car....and even that's a big "maybe!"
I do believe that the Pocono races tend to be somewhat boring......field
strung out and not much drafting. Guess what, that's what we used to have
at Tally and Tona......and those races now are among the most exciting I get
to watch each year now. Maybe the aero package, restrictor plate and
limited fuel cells need to be implemented at Pocono too? It sure wouldn't
hurt to give it a try to find out.
And my last comment: I hate that NASCAR splits up the year between FOX and
TNT/NBC! And, this is even worse now that we have a "run-off" for the
championship for the last 10 races. Bring back FOX....for the whole
year....P.L.E.A.S.E!
The CTS race yesterday at Michigan was anything but boring! And the
coverage was awesome! Then I remembered, that was a FOX/Speed broadcast
team and production crew! Oh yeah, no wonder!

Tom

I totally agree. I guess coverage is better than no coverage, but I
can't stand watching the NBC crew . If they would just focus on the
great racing that goes on throughout the pack, they wouldn't have to
do that lame-ass through-the-field crap. They always focus on some
part of the race where nothing's going on and you get moronic
commentary from the three (especially BP, who's getting more senile by
the minute), and the three guys will engage in some in-depth, but
totally uninteresting, discussion about some driver.
Total.bunch.of.idiots.
I think they're just trying to be the anti-Fox. They just want to do
everything differently, regardless of whether or not it's better. I
wish Fox could do the whole season. They're not perfect by any means,
and Larry Mac can be such a dope, but NBC looks amatuerish compared to
Fox.

Unfortunately, because Fox has the Major League Baseball broadcast rights they
have to cover a lot of late summer/early fall afternoon baseball games during the
pennant drives in September, and the playoffs and World Series in October. So
there's no way they could broadcast the entire Nascar season. Not to mention
that their broadcasts of the NFL on Sunday afternoons starting in September
present a direct scheduling conflict with Nascar.
NBC only got the late season Nascar rights after they lost the rights to both
baseball and football. (Hmm.... Maybe MLB and the NFL knew something that Nascar
didn't?)
I also prefer Fox's Nascar coverage, but don't expect the situation to change any
time soon.

Why not vent to some people who care? Try rec.autos.sport.nascar .
This is SIMULATORS. Or why not NBC? I'm sure they'd love to hear from

Jimmie Johnson had a balanced race car for almost 1,000 miles at the
Pocono track. Now that is amazing.

IMHO, restricter plates != real racing. Besides, those turns are way
too tight for 3 wide. Every time it went 3 wide, someone had to let
off the throttle to avoid an accident. It would be nice to try the
small fuel cells on all the speedways for a better chance at having
more green-flag pit stops and also reduce fuel-mileage strategy.
It ain't Winston Cup/Fox any more :(

It's WAY behind the live action (8-12 seconds).
Plus to use it you really have to watch the race live, which is a problem
for me because I like to let it Tivo for an hour then start watching. You
can figure out why.
Finally, it requires RealPlayer, and I can't think of a company I despise
more.
