Off-topic rant about a Goodyear tyre shop

A poster cross-posted an angry accusation of fraud against Goodyear after a local shop stripped his wheel lug nuts. Replies mocked the overreaction, suggested he deal with the shop directly, and pointed out that the post had nothing to do with racing sims.

F R A U D B Y G O O D Y E A R ! Whatever you do, DO NOT GO TO GOODYEAR! Several months ago, I had my tires changed and front-end aligned by Goodyear. I asked for and was assured that the lug-nuts and lock-nuts would be hand-tightened. Now, I am attempting to replace my brakes, and lo and behold, several bolts are stripped, one lock-nut is stuck in place, and my lock-key is ROUND. Apparantly, I was lied to! The ONLY way these could have been in this condition is if the mechanic used an air-wrench on everthing! I immediately called Goodyear and was told to bring in the car the first thing the next morning. After bringing the car in, they said it would take some time to do this. After an hour of waiting, I had to actually go outside the waiting room and ASK the attendant how much longer it would be before they even began to take a look at my car. He then said that I had to speak with the mechanic in the back because there was a problem. When I went into the back to talk to the mechanic, he said that they are not responsible for the lock-nut or the bolts, and that the ONLY thing that they would do is remove the one stuck lock-nut. They would not replace the damaged bolts or the lock-nuts. I then called out to the other mechanic and asked him if he really did say that the lock-nut was already round when he worked on it. He did not answer. I then stated that I had at least 2 witnesses that could testify that BEFORE I brought the car into Goodyear the lock-nut was in perfect condition and that all the lugs had always been hand-tightened. That mechanic said nothing, and the one that WAS talking to me re-asserted that they were not responsible for it. Well, I got my keys and lock-nut back and left. The attendant out front also did not give me the legal department information even after offering it to me. After he offered it, when I asked for it, he just sniffed at me and told me "good luck in proving anything". Now, when this goes to court, if my information and files are suddenly missing from Goodyear's records, I will know why! Somebody there will have removed them! After reaching home, I called the Goodyear main headquarters, the Better Business Bureau and the police. Goodyear and the BBB are closed for the holiday. The police are too busy to help me today. I will be contacting a lawyer and several local television stations next. According to a mechanic who looked at the wheel and the condition of the lugs and bolts he believes that the condition of everything is so bad, and was made bad by the mechanics at Goodyear using the air-wrench on the lugs and not hand-threading either, has caused a condition that can cause me to have a fatal accident in the car at any point in time. Due to all of this, the way I see it, Goodyear, the mechanics, and the attendants there can at least be charged with the following crimes: Attempted *** *** to commit *** Fraud Refusal to honor a contract / warranty / guarantee Breach of contract The specific Goodyear location is as follows: Goodyear Tires 9805 Jog Road Boynton Beach, FL 33437 Phone # 1-561-732-6664 The Goodyear corporate / general information number is: Phone # 1-800-321-2136 If anyone else has also had such an experience with Goodyear, and if there is a very good lawyer out there who is interested in getting JUSTICE done, I am hoping that a class-action lawsuit can be filed against Goodyear to prevent this kind of thing happening in the future! I do not believe that Goodyear should even be allowed to continue to operate anymore, do you? PLEASE E-MAIL ME AS I WOULD LIKE TO GET A NATIONWIDE BOYCOTT OF GOODYEAR GOING! THANK YOU! Send all e-mail to me at: And remember, whatever you do, DO NOT GO TO GOODYEAR!

Do you always drive around with hand-tightened lug nuts?

Several months ago, I had my tires [Whining about a bad auto service experience deleted...] So meanwhile, you take a case of bad shop management [independently owned?]. Open yourself up to liable by claiming it is an international *** to***you. And shout it for all to see all over the world. When at least I for one could care less about your stripped locknuts... Get a grip. As you go through life you are going to have many such minor disasters. If you can't get response from either the local owner/manager, call Goodyear, if you don't get satisfaction from Goodyear, file a small claims lawsuit - name the local owner and Goodyear. (this usually costs ~$35 and requires no lawyer) The local owner will probably make things right just by the threat of such an action...how would it look if the Goodyear corporation has to clean up after a nickle and dime case of bad auto service. Keep in mind, just flying a Goodyear legal representative to the small claims hearing would likely cost 10 x more than giving you new locknuts and new tires... Have you ever heard of the saying "good managers don't let sh** run uphill?" Just keep making noise and if you get stonewalled ask to speak to that persons manager, write down the name of each person you speak to...If it goes to court you will most likely win...ya just have to convince the judge, and yes...even judges have bad auto service experiences... gene -- /^\ + "Make things as simple as possible, but no simpler." + /___\ + - A. (endless sniveling snipped) You really think you're going to start a boycott because of a local shop's mistakes. If you're so paranoid about getting killed because of stripped lugnuts, why don't you take the hour or so and do your own brake jobs. Of course, then you wouldn't have anyone to sue, but you might actually learn something. -- Brian Fox Nass '96 BGN 'A' Driver The Fox Den: Nascar, ICR2, and (eventually) NFS at http://www.4w.com/pages/fox AND/OR http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/1238 _______________________/\/\_____ \_ /////// __ __'_--/ "Sly as a Fox" \-------/ / /\______/ / Speed doesn't always /_/ /_/ win the race! \\\\\\ // ||\\ // || \\\\\\\\\||_//\\\\\||_//___________________________________________________

Boy, Attempted ***? Doesn't one have to have a life in order for someone else to take it? :)
Maybe you should have watched them tighten the lugs, if this is the way you feel. Or better yet, put some new studs in and mark this up to experience and get of with life. Do you really think that people will boycott goodyear because a guy at a local shop didn't do his job right. Is there a problem with the product? If not boycott your local shop not the tire maker.
Called the police, what the hell for? Sounds like he's waisting everyone's time.

Given how irrational and ridiculous you can get over a screw-up of this minor magnitude, I can't help but wonder how you treat your customers, co-workers, or other people around you when YOU screw-up. You need to learn that human mistakes (and even the very human trait of covering up these mistakes) is part of life and should generally not require lawsuits to be filed. In fact, one of the reasons that prices are high and many people spend more time covering their ass than doing a good job is because of the wildly exagerated and frivolous lawsuit of the type you are advocating.

I think you are both over-reacting. Just take the car back to Goodyear and show them the problem. Be persistant and polite. Work your way up to the top guy at the place if necessary. If they will not accept responsibility, take photographs then have the problem repaired at a reputable dealer. Then gather your receipts and file in small claims court. THat's not frivolous. That's what it's there for. Chances are Goodyear will make good once they receive the small claims subpoena.

I was at work and didnt feel like discussing it further (boss over shoulder), just do the alignment,.....When I picked it up, paying 45 bucks, (big city prices)- I drove it approx. 2 blocks and brought it back, got the run around, they said they did an alignment----I knew that was bullshit....So I demanded they put it up on the lift and proceeded to show them all (mgr. mechanic, svc mgr. etc.) just where the alignment points were, tie rods, offsets on u-i control arms etc...and point to the original road dirt on all the bolts.....Never touched by a wrench in the recognizable past.... The mechanic got real mad and started throwing wrenches, lucky for him, I was ready....the manager fell silent and refunded my cash on the spot..... these days you gotta know more than the people you hire to do any job for you, or your ripped off....consumer ignorance is rampant.... I can work on the space shuttle if they wanted me to and do a good job too... I just think its a stitch about all the consumer ignorance about the things their very lives and income depend on.... Dear Gene; Just because some lazy mechanics tried to fool their manager by saying they did the work dosent mean all Goodyear dealers are BAD! As a matter of fact most try real hard to run a grass roots operation of honest, fair and good work by using better than avarage mechanics. The whole barell isnt bad because of a few.

The fact that the complainant is a total hysterical jerk does not eliminate one's responsability to do the right thing if a mistake has been made. However it would take a remarkable individual not to chase an over-reacting dithering idiot like you out the door with the biggest tire iron in the place. Being reasonable usually begets a reasonable response, being unreasonable begets resentment and reduced or no cooperation as you should have figured out by now. Don
I'm willing to bet he was refering to them being tightened with hand tools vs. air tools.

HEY I am tired of hear from you too. Let me know what your address is an I will send you some Wisconsin Cheese to go with your whine. You sound like the Electric Car People and I do not want to hear anything from either one of you. Your problem is not our problem and has nothing to do with the product it is the service that you did or did not receive from a local vendor. writes Nice idea, but I don't think he would read this NG. He posted to all the car related ones I read (even karting for Christs sake!), but I doubt he could be as intelligent to actually READ the replies. If you do, Mr. Bridgestone (I assume that is who you are), then I would gently request that you continue driving your car with dodgy wheelnuts.
