I have been running NASCAR under MS-DOS 6.22 environment, booting from my MS-DOS setup menu containing several configurations. I recently upgraded Windows 3.11 to WIN95. I have tried to run the game by booting up in Windows 95 and then shutting down and restarting in MS-DOS mode. My MS-DOS setup menu comes up and I select the appropriate configuration (menu choice) for running NASCAR the way I always have, but Windows95 starts. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to run NASCAR with a WIN95 operating system? Thanks for any help!! Mike Bruno JMB55

This question has been asked & answered many times. NASCAR 1.x is not supported under Win 95. It might work on a few systems but for the vast majority, it doesn't work. Ed Martin Producer, Series Director NASCAR Racing League Papyrus / Sierra On-Line, Inc.
I just Start-Shutdown-Reboot in Dos-mode, and run nascar. BTW, you don't need the boot menu from Dos 6.22 anymore. Each icon can have its own config.sys and autoexec.bat assigned, overriding the ones for windows. I use this method for EF2000 and Nascar cause they hate Windows or are RAM hogs. Most games like C&C though just run under Windows Dos-shell (ie in a window). Rick
To answer the question you asked..Press the F8 key when you see the line Booting Windows95... Select MS-DOS mode and then you can run Nascar without any problems. -- Lannie Schafroth

Ok Mike, here goes. I don't know exactly why you need multiple configurations so I will suggest forgetting them. The only exception might be for expanded memory but I won't get into that now. Win95 still uses config.sys and autoexec.bat as well as adding dosstart.bat which is in the Win95 directory. Dosstart.bat works the same as autoexec.bat except that it run when you Shutdown to MS-DOS mode instead of at bootup. I try to keep these files as simple as possible without having to leave out any drivers to save precious conventional memory. Here are my three files: Config.sys: DOS=HIGH,UMB Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys Device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems i=b000-b7ff i=e000-e7ff i=ee00-efff DEVICEHIGH=c:\cdrom\WCD.SYS /D:WP_CDROM Device=c:\plugplay\drivers\dos\dwcfgmg.sys DEVICEHIGH=C:\VIBRA16\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5 DEVICEHIGH=C:\VIBRA16\DRV\CTMMSYS.SYS FILES=40 SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP SET PROMPT=$p$g SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS SET SOUND=C:\VIBRA16 SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6 SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E PATH c:\windows;c:\windows\COMMAND C:\VIBRA16\DIAGNOSE /S C:\VIBRA16\MIXERSET /P /Q LH c:\windows\command\mscdex.exe /D:WP_CDROM /m:20 c:\msinput\mouse.exe rem LH C:\WINDOWS\SmartDrv As you can see I have no drivers loading from autoexec.bat, they all load from dosstart.bat. This improves boot speed and cuts down on driver conflicts with Win95 because the drivers don't load until after Win95 shuts down. The inclusions on the emm386 line free up some upper memory. You may want to try them. You will have to adapt this to you drivers. If you set you machine up this way you shouldn't need a multiple configuration and you can set up icons in Win95 to run any DOS program. Expanded memory can also be added from within the program's icon properties. I get 613,000+ bytes of free conventional mem with this setup, that should be enough for anything. I don't use smartdrive usually but you can if you want to. Once you get this working properly you will be much happier with Win95 for running dos stuff. Next step is to learn to create icons to automatically shutdown to DOS and run Nascar. That is much easier though. Dana Bailes

I call it RACE.BAT. It contains the line NASCAR -h. When I run this from WIN95 it doesn't bother shutting down, it just loads the game in it's own window with no problems. If I try to run it with the regular NASCAR -h command line, the system will always try to shutdown to dos and run it. -- Lannie Schafroth

Good info...2 items though... 1) If you create an ICON and right click, properties, Program, Advanced, select DOS mode, SPECIFY new MS-DOS mode settings then put the autoexec info in the autoexec.bat window and put config in the config window then info in DOSSTART.BAT is bypassed. DOSSTART is called upon only when you start in DOS mode by hitting f8 during boot. 2) Really..the only item you need in the CONFIG.sys is Device=C:\Windows\Himem.sys. That's it. EMM386 actually slows down Nascar a bit as it uses a DOS extender which provides all the conventional memory the game requires. This is assuming you're running the game off your hard drive(WHICH YOU SHOULD!!) and not your CD-Rom. Anytime you create custom DOS mode autoexec and config's, you should always load only what's necessary. Obivously, you don't need a mouse with Nascar..so don't load it. Run off a hard disk? then don't load the CD-Rom. KenH

Now the computer will operate just like it did before you put on Win95.. that is boot to DOS. Then you can use your alternate boot path menus without having to change them. Weyr

The instructions I gave were for a general purpose configuration which would work for 99% of programs. It was intended for a novice user trying to get programs working on Win95. My setup relieves the user from having to make a custom configuration for every DOS program he installs, and the two reboots involved with a custom configuration. DOSSTART.BAT is executed when you shut down to DOS or use the CURRENT MS-DOS configuration from the Advanced icon property screen, NOT when you hit F8 at boot. If you are using a custom configuration for a program you will have to combine the necessary elements of autoexec and dosstart required by that program. I find that to be a hassle and I know what I'm doing. Most programs require the soundcard drivers to be loaded by config.sys, Nascar is an exception. I'm not sure but a pnp driver may be required for certain sound cards. I assume the average user prefers ease of use over absolute performance. They can worry about that when they better understand what is going on. Dana Bailes

I'm not trying to get flamed or anything, but *WHY* would anyone run NASCAR under Win95, without at least shutting down to DOS to free up SOME memory?? Does it actually run SMOOTH on your computer in Win95? I do it because I hate having to reboot my computer. I run every single DOS game I have through Win95 and have had no trouble with any of them. I do run Nascar in regular VGA, but even back in DOS SVGA was too slow for my tastes (I have a p120 with 32megs RAM). It runs fine for me, and I like how I can easily ALT-TAB out of a game and check my e-mail or catch up with the newsgroup posts. -- Emory University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Nascar Setups Page: http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~ebusch/

I didn't do anything special to get it to work, I just set it up like I would any other DOS program. Every now and then it will lock up at the title screen, but most of the time it runs fine. I have never had trouble running DOS apps through Win95, perhaps I'm just lucky? -- Emory University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Nascar Setups Page: http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~ebusch/
So I can secretly run it while I should be doing other things! :) Anyways, it dosn't slow down enough to be noticable. -- Lannie Schafroth

You know, I hate it when people do this. Sure, we all made the mistake of upgrading to win95. We can't do jack about it, it's gonna take over sometime. So either give him an answer, or just don't say anything. You have to either hit f8 at your startup beep, and select command prompt only, or download the TweakUI powertoy at http://www.microsoft.com

The easiest way to run Nascar or ICR for Windows 95 is to creat an icon as normal and set it up to run in "DOS mode only". This will restart Windows in DOS mode and start Nascar or ICR and when you exit the game will automaticaly restart Win 95. I have it set up this way and it works perfect. Another benifet of doing this is that you can control the volume level better. Go into volume control you use (I use Audiostation)and turn the WAV control up or down depending on you taste. If anybody needs any help with getting them to run help the best I can (P.S. I love Windows 95) Skip Paret Business Computer Products V 904-947-4800 F 904-947-4865
