Greetings, I bought Electronics Arts: The Need for Speed Special Edition yesterday and got the game installed under Win95 and then used the Joystick configuration utility.... I have a GUS Max soundcard which is where the joystick gameport is and have a CH FlightStick plugged into it. However, when I played the game, I can only use the keyboard or mouse, what am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any help. Vince

I had the same problem, I have a Lxycon (Soundblaster compatible) sound card with a joystick port. Windows 95 needs to recognize your joystick. Look under Control Panel to see if you have a Joystick Icon, if so try to configure it there first. I was never able to get Win/95 to recognize my joystick port so I settled for the DOS version. I think you have the option for full or partial install. I used the partial install, so I need the CD in to play, I don't know about full. Does you joystick work under NFSSE JCU? If if does, once you start the game, go into options and configure controller. If that doesn't work, I am out of ideas. Robert

I have a GUS Max soundcard which is : where the joystick gameport is and have a CH FlightStick plugged into it. : However, when I played the game, I can only use the keyboard or mouse, : what am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any help. This took me forever to figure out since the instructions with the original version of the game didn't detail this. However, just go to configure and highlight steering. Then press your spacebar. That should help you out.

It seems JCU would lock up when it's exiting if you run it from Win95 but I fixed the problem when I went to Win95 DOS Bootup mode and ran JCU... Anyways, how well can you steer in the game with a joystick or what's the best solution besides getting that steering wheel thing.... Thanks for your suggestion though since that was a problem but I figured it out... Also, on my FlightStick, there is a throttle wheel, is that any use in the game? Hi all, I've been having some joystick (T1) trouble with NFSSE too. It works under Win95, no problem there. For a direct link race I wanted a better frame rate so I changed to dos. I can calibrate the T1 more or less (after turning/pushing it to the extremes it doesn't return to center + what the hell are those bars on the right supposed to be?). In the game I can set the controls and steer the car but it doesn't react to throttle or brake control. I've tried everything including changing the speed setting on my ACM. I've done some measurements on the T1 and have decided to try to extend the range of the throttle/brake axis electronically. I'll let you know if that works out. Meanwhile all comments and suggestions are appreciated. Jan.
Can anyone tell me is NFS SE is better than the original and if the editors available for changing the tracks in NFS work on SE's tracks. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It's just as fast as the original. I played the demo of the first NFS, and the full NFS SE. They both ran smoothly on my P-100/16 with full detail in SVGA. The only place it gets a bit choppy is the dark forest on the Coastal track. Paul

The only place it gets a bit choppy is the dark forest : on the Coastal track. I have both the original nfs, and nfsse. On my P133/32/mach 64 2meg Vram, NFS classic was perfectly smooth on all tracks at all times, not limited by the computer at all. nfsse is ever so slightly limited at times. I can tell a slight frame rate drop. A friend who has a 486 DX5133 cannot run SE except in interlaced mode, but could run NFS with most detail settings to high, in high detail SVGA. I am very picky about driving games being absolutely smooth, with no choppyness whatsoever. I am sure you can run it like you do, but it would not run acceptably fast for my taste, and the original NFS would run better. -- __________________________________________________________ '56 Ford F-100 __________________________________________________________

Yes its better. Two more tracks, one is pretty good the other sucks. Heaps of new music, a few alterations in the menus. If you've got the first one think about it. If you have heaps of money get it anyway because this game rules!!! Oh, and i didn't know anything about editing tracks! Do you? Please tell me how to get such a thing . Bret. P.S. -> And your fastest times are?

Just to add my own $.02: I have found the NFS SE runs just as well as the original on my P133/32/Stealth 64/6x CD Fortunately, though, for anyone who is concerned about speed or the game in general is that Electronic Arts has announced, OFFICIALLY, that there WILL be an NFS 2 John

Hi, I recently tried to get the SE for Win95 to load on my machine at home and work. It would not load. It just stopped after clicking on the "DirectX installed" button. The EA web site says that it needs the latest DirectX drivers. I had already loaded them from the Monster Truck Madness Trial demo (which worked perfectly) so EA was no help on that matter. I did load it under DOS and everything worked fine. The extra tracks and other options doesn't make the upgrade from the original NFS worth it. They do offer you a $15 dollar rebate, but you have to send them the original's CD. The one thing I did like was that the warrior car and extra tracks (rally and mirror mode) appear in the selection windows after you apply the "patch". No, the tracks from the original NFS will not work in SE because they are compressed now (Maybe that's why it runs a little slower). I would not buy SE as an upgrade, but if I had the extra money laying around (ha! ha!) I would buy SE and keep the original, also. John
