Watching Belgian qualifying this afternoon, Villeneuve on pole, and Murray Walker reveals that Jacques has learnt the circuit on a computer game! GP2 or GP1? wonder what setup he uses, and what his fastest time is. Bet Geoff Crammond is pleased!

Not to***in the Cheerios, but Williams has their own sim, and it looks a helluva lot better than, say, my desk. They get to use old cars, which must give them a bit of an advantage as far as offering a realistic feel. Now imagine Patrick Head building his own PC-compatible steering wheel....mmmm.....velocity.....

I caught this too ... it was music to my ears, as last week I posted a note (subject: "Villeneuve: A quicker learner?") in which I specualated that Mr Villeneuve was using a sim t(at last?) which would explain his q quick mastery of the Hungaroring. (One reply said that it was only his getting hiss own way with car setup, but that wasn't my point!) So ... vindication for speculation? I am right so pitifully seldom..... I thought the same when he was in Indycar. One of the problems in Papyrus Indycar sim (original) is the stupidity of the drivers coming from behind and ramming your car at the running starts. The best way to avoid it and to get off to consistent good starts (from the pole of course) is to hold the field up with a very, very slow pace, then accelerating just before the green. Jacques used the same tactic whenever he was on the pole in Indycars. Lloyd

Well, Ville's exact words were 'I just checked a new video game out and the track on that was fairly close. It gave you a good idea of where you should be going.' and 'But I was only 18th on the grid in the game!' Tomorrows race should be a cracker - spa's my current favourite to race on in GP2. Shame i'm crap.

I can confirm you that it *WAS* GP2: I've read it this morning in an italian newspaper. (Now I want to see if someone still has the courage to say "GP2 is not good, not realistic, etc...") Marco

The Belgium track is one of the few GP2 tracks that I know well enough to hope for a decent result. I was amazed at how similar the real track was to the simulated track - I knew every corner, every gear change etc etc. My girlfriend got really irritated with my on going commentary ("Ah, well. When I take that corner I'm in third gear by then, which would have allowed me to take Damon Hill blah blah blah"). It doesn't suprise me in the least that Villeneuve is (possibly) using GP2 to learn the tracks. I suppose that from a nationalistic point of view I should be rooting for Hill for this season, but Villeneuve is soooo impressive, don't you think? Andrew

I read the same thing in the UK Sunday Times today and they quoted it to be GP2. And if he could only qualify 18th in GP2, what does that say about GP2's AI? Geoff C. must be overjoyed. I'd bet he's doing the Macarena to celebrate this free publicity!

according to the Sunday Edition of the Seattle Times Villeneuve stated that the useage of the computer game was "childlike and stupid"..does this mean that according to him that he is above playing games? well he did do good yes?...i wonder why he would say a thing like that?? i wonder if he knows that NASCAR AND INDYCAR sims are the best selling sims going..i think that they even passed simcity in all time sales..i could be wrong...

I believe Villeneuve said something like <<I know this might sound childish... but I learned the track from playing a new video game>> (or something like that). I highly doubt the "stupid" remark. You properly misread the article and attributed inaccurate quotations to Villeneuve (or the article's author did). In any event, it's well known that Villeneuve is a self-confessed computer buff. During a Rothman's publicity tour in Montreal earlier this year, the media showed Jacques surfing the internet. jl

from the london times: ... when he arrived at the post-qualifying press conference, the personification of grunge with his shoelaces dragging on the ground and wearing a T-shirt covered by a denim shirt open to the waist, he admitted sheepishly that his ability to outqualify Hill for the first time since the opening race of the season in Melbourne owed much to playing on a computer video game, the GP2, that recreates the contours and curves of every grand prix circuit. "It is going to sound childish and stupid," he said, "but I checked out the new video game and the tracks are fairly close to the real thing. It gives you a good idea of where you should be going. You know that after the start-finish line you are going to get to a hairpin and then you are going to be at Eau Rouge. I didn't get pole on the video game, though. I was 18th."
Max Galvi 31 Aug 1996#335625
Tom Kristiansen also took the same route to help him learn the track for his European F3000 race (supporting the GP). He said that it helped learn the flow of the track rather than specifics. Personally I can understand this as my problem on tracks (simulated and not simulated) is not knowing what is coming next, rather than having problems on the corner I'm on at the time. If you set the car wrong up on the exit it can lead to big problems entering the next corner. Absolutely, totally agree. Can you imagine the benefit that a program like this would have on circuits like the Old Nurburgring? -- Spencer Stevens
