Simulating a modem connection across the ethernet (for games)

Hello all, (apols for the bizarre crossposting) I'm trying to use a couple of games (Grand Prix 2, Indycar) supporting modem / null-modem play to play between two machines with ethernet connections to the internet. Firstly, I'm surprised that I haven't found any description of this having already been attempted - and if it has been done successfully, I'd be very interested to hear! I've tried two similar strategies to doing this. The first was to use net14.exe, supplied with NCSA telnet. It diverts calls to the INT14 software interrupt (for serial communications) to the ethernet card. You can get net14 connected via telnet to a particular IP address by passing it ^B1.2.3.4^C. We can both make connections to UNIX hosts using this method, and log in using kermit sending direct to INT14, which is then diverted to telnet. Having logged in, running IHHD (internet head-to-head daemon) means we can set the connection up so that everything sent from A goes to B and vice versa. The problems happen when we actually use a game (e.g. GP2). Having set up the connection (above), and pushed from kermit, attemting a modem connection in GP2 somehow seems to reset the internet connection. (Just running GP2, exiting, and returning to kermit does not). We've tried the same thing with tnglass, a telnet which can take input from INT14, with the same results. We suspect that the process of initialising the modem in the game is causing all the problems...any ideas for a solution? If anyone has successfully managed to do this for any game or situation requiring an ethernet connection to emulate a modem, I'd love to know. This might sound stupid ...but have you tried choosing the option (or is the option available) "already connected" like in some modem games (i've never tried GP2) instead of dial or wait for call???
