These questions are perhaps embarassingly basic, but my main
simulation experience is with air combat sims.
(I am just beginning to get the rythm of driving down relative to the
track.) First, what's the best way to maneuver to pass AI cars?
What's the best way of keeping them from zooming into the turns
braking later and coming out ahead, or worse rear ending you?
Second, if I quick race and place myself in the middle of the starting
grid on Monza, how do I avoid yielding 5 positions going into the
first turn or getting my car crumpled into a beer can as all the cars
converge?
Thanks.

Get beeing them on straights to get a tow and when youre closing up
just steer a little and pass them.
Other way is to outbrake them, with a little practice you'll find
that you can sometimes reduce the braking length a lot.
I try to keep the inside line to block em...dont brake hard in their
faces....
Dont try to win the race on the first turn...place yourself in a good
position (not too much in the inside) and drive as slow as them
and keep your line

these are my little advide, i'm no expert but I hope it helps
see ya! :)

I will agree that the GP2 AI is very forgiving, if you let them. Don't
stop dead on the track and they won't hit you. They seem to have better
mirrors than my car in GP2!, but maybe that's because they can hear my
car coming! ;-) Howver, the are dumber than ______, if I spin out in
the middle of the track. If this is near the start, I can't get out of
the way until all of the traffic goes by. But it won't go by! They
just keep plowing into me, trying to bulldoze me off the course. They
won't backup, turn around, etc.

Upside out, or inside down...False alarm the only game in town.

Never had that happen to me. I am usually *WAY* ahead at that point :-)
I have noticed that just like in GP1, if you do not give them a line, they
do not try to pass. I suggest making your car wider :-) I have held up
traffic at spa quite alot. Since I never give a good opening for a pass,
I am always in front of the train...

I generally agree- I am impressed with them too. They can be
incredibly bold at times, and the contrast to the wise conservatism
they show when they know they are beaten is very impressive.
Man, I know what you are talking about. But let;s face it, in F1, one
you spin, it is all over anyway! This certainly leaves a bad taste in
the mouth tho- I've quit racing many times after getting knocked
around repeatedly like a hockey puck until I'm 26th and 9 seconds
behind anybody.
I've located one place where AI guys are truly idiots- at Spa, in the
final chicane before the curve toward the start/finish. AI guys will
hit you very fast and hard if you are stuck in a line of traffic
there. I ask myself- why are all the AI guys stuck ahead of me just
fine, and it is always the AI guy behind ME that wipes us all out? ;>
Also, AI guys seem to love to pass there. I tend to think in real life
most drivers would have a sort of unspoken agreement to keep some
space in there; if you tangle, both of you are out. But the AI guys
just dive in over the first curb to pass me, and it is a pure game of
"chicken" after that. 9 times out of 10 we're both out of the race.
Best to let them go.

Hmm, didn't happen to me, yet...
But at the start they're even worse, start from last grid position,
get on the right side and blast through to the first corner.
Usually you'll be in the top ten at that time...
That should be considered a bug, I think.
...bye, Niels

The car in GP2, the one that you are driving is top-of-the-bill...
It's like putting a Williams on the back row... It'll fly right by the
minardi's and stuff... that's for sure :-)
