Flame warOff-topic argument over Irvan and Earnhardt Talladega crash

A poster blamed Ernie Irvan for the Talladega crash that sent Dale Earnhardt into the wall. Others defended Irvan as a racing incident, and the original poster replied with a string of capitalised rants. Many regulars told him the topic belonged in rec.autos.sport.nascar.

Who here thinks that Ernie Irvan (a NASCAR Winston Cup Driver) drove into the back of Sreling Marlin at Talladega. He said that it was Sterlings fault. Then Sterling crashed into Dale Earnhardt and sent him FLYING into the wall practically head on, then D.E. FLIPPED once onto his side then got hit by 4 MORE CARS! Swervin denied the WHOLE thing. He said it was Sterlings fault! Can you beleive that, I mean at least admit to it that you made a mistake! His Crew Cheif said that Sterling had Ernie all the way down onto the apron in the Tri-oval. That's a bunce of BULL-SH!T! He drove down there all by himself! He didn't get much of any damage and walked away as once again "SWERVIN IRVAN" the HELL RAISER! Erine Irvan is STILL Swervin Irvan to me and I think he needs MORE medical attention TOO! What do you all think?? I will await ALL you replys. And I'm sure I'll get PLENTY! Well, first off, I will tell you I am a fan of the #28 car (and the #2 and the #88). Secondly, I have went to your page and can certainly tell that you are an Earnhardt fan, which would substantiate your obvious bias in the situation. Earnhardt (which of all the chevy drivers I respect the most) himself said the incident was "just racing". This same thread ran its course on Compuserve two weeks ago, starting the same way as this one. DE himself has done the same type of thing before (remember when he got together with Rusty and sent him flying?) which, in my opinion, was also just part of racing. These drivers hang it out on the edge every race, especially when they are at Talladega, where the cars got 200 mph just inches apart. I concur with Earnhardt that the incident was just racing and let it go at that. Kevin

Like I've been saying, Well now from the looks of it I should be thanking CBS Portland, OR. Got to see the whole race with just updates on the reg scheduled golf tourney after the last wreck. BTW: personal opinion, it looked to me (as well as could tell from cruddy camera angles) like Ernie drifted up at his right front at the same time as Sterling drifted down into corner and voila, 14 cars ala la'machine!! As the real pros would say, It was just one of those racing things. I personaly think that we need to keep the bigger picture in mind and be thankful that there were no career ending/life threatening injuries. I for one couldn't believe it when Dale was able to walk to the ambulance after watching his car roll over and get tagged 3 more times, once in the roof. It says a lot for how the sport has advanced in saftey and building tech when you can see 14 cars involved in something like that and everyone lives. Not to long ago they'd of hauled at least one driver out in the heli if not the coroners van. I could sit here and howl about who did what but my feeling is that while everyone has a favorite driver, the sport is about the race itself, not the petty bickering about laying blame. After all, at 200+ shit happens and that's the whole story. Does anyone see the teams which had mega $ worth of car destroyed talking the kind of sadly pitiful crud that has flown around here lately? Have any of the flamers against driver A or B ever driven a car at Taladega? I don't know but I doubt it, lets not lose the big picture here folks and just be thankful we even have a sport like this to watch. Maybe this will draw flames, maybe not, I hope and like to think we are mature enough to be beyond that. I try to remain objective and simply enjoy the sport without laying blame when "my" driver is knocked out or when "my" driver does the knocking. YES I'M A 100% DE FAN, AND PROUD OF IT! True DE did hit RW in 1994, BUT at least he admitted to it and whet to go see if he was alright after the wreck! EI didn't even think he had ANY FAULT! I mean ADMIT that you made a mistake and thats that! Even his ccrew cheif wouldn't admit up to EI making a POSSIBLY mistake, he said that it was SM fault! WRONG. I'll wait to hear from ya. I admit Irvan and his crew chief could have handled it better, and from what I could see from the replays, it looks like he did drift up to hit Marlin's rear end. I just wonder how things would have turned out if it were someone like Gordon or T. Labonte was in Irvan's position and the accident occured with similar results? I bet you bowtie fans wouldn't have said anything except what Earnhardt had already said, "It's just racing," and let it go at that. Kevin

If you'll watch the replay real close, you'll see just before the touch, Ernie was forced down onto the apron. Unlike in the sim, when you do this in a real car, you will slip up the track. Maybe he should have backed off, but would you (or that "Take'em out if they wont move" guy Dale). Mike

It was just racin'. Marlin came down a little and squeezed Ervan down onto the apron. Once he got the two left side tires on the apron, the car came back up the track, as it will when that happens. With no where else to go, he drifted into Marlin. That was certainly nothing like Earnhardt taking out Hamilton earlier in the year :). Adam Papyrus

Yea, most people hate a driver that comes along and kicks their drivers ass out of the #1 spotlight. You might as well get used to it, Dale will never win a championship again. Mike
: Who here thinks that Ernie Irvan (a NASCAR Winston Cup Driver) drove : into the back of Sreling Marlin at Talladega. He said that it was Much BS Cut : Sterlings fault. Then Sterling crashed into Dale Earnhardt and sent : IRVAN" the HELL RAISER! Erine Irvan is STILL Swervin Irvan to me and I : think he needs MORE medical attention TOO! What do you all think?? I : will await ALL you replys. And I'm sure I'll get PLENTY! : Well, once again a DE fan lets their mouth get in the way of what little brains they have. I have always been a Ford fan and am a Ernie Irvan fan but I still like to see races when Earnhardt and Labonte and all the other Chevy guys are running with the Fords, simply because it is more interesting. Heck I even like some Chevy drivers and I would even like Earnhardt BUT thanks to "fans" like Tom I really have trouble liking DE. Anyone who watched the interview "objectively" with Ernie Irvan saw that he "did not take the blame for the wreck" but he did give a rational excuse and no hid "did not" blame the wreck on Sterling. He did say Sterling came down but he also mentioned that Jarrett was on his bumper which caused him to slide up. Guess some people missed that part of the interview. Anybody with a brain can watch the replay and see that Ernie's car clearly went up the track and into Marlin. But it takes someone with a brain that works to realize that this type of stuff happens and when cars are cutting through the air at 190 even the smallest bobble can cause a 14 car pileup. All I'm trying to say is this stuff happens all of the time and as long as they run with restrictor plates it will continue to happen. Yes it was partially Ernie's fault but it certainly wasn't intentional. I mean what idiot would turn into another driver at the front of the field at Talladega on purpose!? If people would get off of their high horse just because they cheer for "The Champ" and let him drive like the great driver he is then I'm sure several other people out there would admit respecting DE more than they do today. Hell, when Darrel Waltrip hit Davey Allison at Pocono and almost killed him I sure didn't see anyone griping at DW. As usual when a popular driver causes a wreck it was"just one of those racing deals." Of course when a popular driver is in a wreck caused by someone else then it is obviously a lack of talent on the transgressor's part. Can't we all just enjoy the races instead of pointing fingers? Listen. I JUST got my Agent working and have been meaning to post things for a LONG sime now and I got carried away with it. SORRY! Tom Wardell http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/2171
Don't forget that Irvan got his nickname while he was in a Bowtie. It doesn't matter what he drives. I like Irvan, but he did come up into Marlin. That's it. Now lets drop it all and get back to racing. BTW...this belongs in RASN. -- http://www.netins.net/showcase/mpete Nascar..Weather..OnNetCameras..Oddities..and more.. Stop on by, what can it hurt?
-- Joey W. Isaacs | Well, once again a DE fan lets their mouth get in the way of what little | brains they have. I have always been a Ford fan and am a Ernie Irvan fan | but I still like to see races when Earnhardt and Labonte and all the other | Chevy guys are running with the Fords, simply because it is more interesting. Heck I even like some Chevy drivers and I would even like Earnhardt BUT thanks to "fans" like Tom I really have trouble liking DE. Anyone who watched the | interview "objectively" with Ernie Irvan saw that he "did not take the | blame for the wreck" but he did give a rational excuse and no hid "did not" | blame the wreck on Sterling. He did say Sterling came down but he also | mentioned that Jarrett was on his bumper which caused him to slide up. | Guess some people missed that part of the interview. Anybody with a brain | can watch the replay and see that Ernie's car clearly went up the track and | into Marlin. But it takes someone with a brain that works to realize that | this type of stuff happens and when cars are cutting through the air at | 190 even the smallest bobble can cause a 14 car pileup. Right On! Yes I am a fan of Dale Earnhardt! No I don't like Ernie Irvan! No I don't like Jeff (Wonderboy) Gordon! Yes I like Rusty Wallace! (that should stop the Chevy/Ford ideas) But as stated above, Ernie said the his car was getting lose, Jarret was on and off the gas behind and that caused him to get looser. When he tried to control the car, he did appear to overcorrect his steering, causing him to drop onto the apron. (Who at this point wouldn't have jerked the wheel a little?) At that point in the turn, the cars have a natural tendency to drift up a little anyways. Maybe I'm rambling.... Don't mean to! After Bud at the Glen however, when Ernie stayed out after spraying trans fluid onto the course (why didn't NASCAR black flag him anyways?) and caused Rusty to slide into the tire barricade, I have dropped quite a bit of respect for Ernie and his team.... I'm not trying to upset anyone, just throwing in my 2 cents worth.... But hey! If Dales happy and content with "Thats just racing" then so am I! sorry not pertinent to the group.... But I just had to spit it out!
: sorry not pertinent to the group.... But I just had to spit it out! It's okay, venting accepted. Just don't make it a habit, or we'll have to ask you to got to rec.autos.sport.nascar ;-) And if you persist, we will force you to take such posts to rec.autos.sport.indy where you will be flamed eternally for your heresay!
