DIVIDE THIS GROUP!!

It`s impossible to discuss other simulators because all the entries are about GP2 and your contribution will only stay in the group for about 1 day and thats not good. So, all in favour of dividing say I. http:/home.sol.no/noette/
: It`s impossible to discuss other simulators because all the entries : are about GP2 and your contribution will only stay in the group for : about 1 day and thats not good. : So, all in favour of dividing say I. : http:/home.sol.no/noette/ There is an official move a-foot to do just this. You need to subscribe to news.groups and contribute to the discussion going on there if this is what you want. Why is it hard to discuss something other than GP2? If you want to discuss NASCAR, post away. It would be helpful if you prefix your Subject Heading with "NASCAR: " so people can find it easily. There's no reason one can't discuss other sims, just cuz GP2 has all of the traffic at the moment. There haven't been many posts about the other sims for the last week. Just creating a separate newsgroup won't necessarily create more postings. If you want to discuss another sim, do it! I am a little confused as to what you meant by "contribution" only staying around for a day or so. Usually your ISP keeps newsgroup messages around for a couple of weeks. Once you read a message, your newsreader won't show it again. That's its job. Otherwise everytime you checked r.a.s. there would be 800-1000 messages. Most of which you have already read. A good newsreader will allow you to pull back all of the messages you have already read if you need them. -- **************************** Michael E. : It`s impossible to discuss other simulators because all the entries : are about GP2 and your contribution will only stay in the group for : about 1 day and thats not good. : So, all in favour of dividing say I. : http:/home.sol.no/noette/ First there is an official move to do just this. If you are truly interested in creating other r.a.s. sub-groups, you need to subscribe to the newsgroup news.groups. Here you can participate in the process. Secondly, I really should not be carrying on this discussion here, but since it sits here I will follow it up. However I invite others to continue this conversation in news.groups (where I will also post this response under a subject containing "rec.autos.simulators"). It's not difficult to discuss other sims in r.a.s., just do it. For the last week or 2 I will admit that GP2 has constituted the wealth of postings here in r.a.s. However, in the past this honor has been held by other sims (ICR2, NASCAR, HAWAII). One can't have a discussion if someone doesn't post something. There have been only a small handful of postings related to non-GP2 sims in the last few days. To help in posting about a sim in a multi-sim newsgroup, please prefix your Subject Heading with a code for the sim (ICR2:, NASCAR:, HAWAII:, NFS:, GP2, etc.) This way people who only wish to discuss or read about a particular sim can easily find what they are looking for. They can also avoid reading about a sim they don't care about. Not only does this help readers, it helps the poster. Especially if they are looking for information or an answer. Some people seem to have the misconception that simply creating a new sub-newsgroup will generate postings. This arguement sounds interesting in times such as this, when one sim is the hot topic because it just came out. But, in the long run this is a naive concept. If a sub-group does not generate lots of traffic, people will lose interest and it will wither on the vine. It also will not be an attractive newsgroup to new potential readers/posters. The other thing mentioned in this post (contributions only lasting a day or so). A poster's contribution stays for quite some time in the newsgroups. The length of time one can see it depends on how long your ISP keeps news around. I think mine keeps news for around 2 weeks. It's your newsreader that is not showing you old posts. This is to keep you from having to weed thru thousands of posts you've already read. A good newsreader will allow you to pull all posts stored in by your ISP. -- **************************** Michael E. You really should try and find a newsreader with killfiles, this will allow you to set it to ignore GP2 posts. I see that you posted that using Netscape, which is a great Web browser but a lousy newsreader. One great Windows95 newsreader with killfiles and subject filters is NewsXpress2.0 , the best part is that it does this even in the shareware version. Also has UUdecoding and jpeg viewing features plus a whole lot more. It can be found at: ftp://ftp.neosoft.com/pub/users/c/conrads/nx20b2.zip Or on: http://www.windows95.com/apps/news.html Personally I do most of my news reading on a UNIX shell account using 'trn'. I do think that a lot of people's problems with too many posts on here is because they use Netscape to read news, a function that it can do, but one which it is not very good at. As my old shop teacher used to say, "You can use a screwdriver as a chisel, but a chisel will work much better." Hope that helps you to not have to see "GP2 posts". <snipped> I took john's advise a fews days ago and switched to NewsXpress2.0. MAN what difference. Sure wish some more people would post about Nascar. There's not as many messages as I thought. Another thing to note is that the GP2 guys are pretty darn good about labeling thier messages with GP2. Something I (Nascar guy) haven't always been too good at. BTW It's better than Netscape in other areas too. Thanks again john, Mike Radler

Wow Mike, I'm glad to see it has made life easier on you, the Nascar2 talk should be picking up in a month or two, looking forward to it's release hopefully early fall. Also glad to help ;-) Cheers. --John -- ------------------- John (Joao) Silva http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jsilva Seattle, Washington USA.
