GP2 vs Girlfriend/Wife

----------------------------------------- The sound of a highrevving V10 fills the room, then some fast downshifting and the sound of tires fighting for grip - he looses the rear and BANG there goes the left rear tire and some bodywork flies in the air. He: Shit, still too much oversteer....hmmm...hmmm..perhaps I should adjust the antiroll bars...or the front wing...I don't want to have too much rear wing - it will slow me down on the straights....hmmmm He goes out from the pits to have another try and in the middle of the first flying lap she enters the room. She: Are you still playing that game? Will you never stop? He quickly hits the pause-button. He: How many times have I told you not to talk to me when I am qualifying! Besides it is not a _game_! It is a _simulation_ - and that is a _big_ difference! She: It looks like a game to me. He: Well, it is not. And I have been waiting for this _simulation_ for a long time. And I have to learn how to use these new setup-options, you see. She: No, I don't. ------------------------------------------- And who can blame her? Anyone recognise the above situation? I think we should start sending in good tricks to make our girlfriends/wifes understand that we really have to race GP2. Tricks to keep them happy while we are racing all the time. The main issue here is that we can race non-stop and still not having to deal with a bad conscience (sp?) because of our partners being bored and so on. BTW, are there any female racers in this group? /Martin
On Fri, 2 Aug 1996 11:59:04 +0100, Martin Granberg <snip> Oh, have I been there. I usually don't get to reach the PAUSE button before I'm sliding off into the sand trap (I usually race with my wheel on my lap with the pedals under the desk). She knows now that if she comes in SHE hits the PAUSE button if she needs me (I went to headphones, too)! I showed my wife the screen. She kind of had that glazed "what am I supposed to look at" face. I unsuccessfully tried to get her to realize the technical lengths I was going to in order to run faster with the likes of Schumacher and Hill, but to no avail. I got my wife interested in IndyCar racing, and she actually follows the championship and can hold her own in a conversation with the "boys" when they talk racing. I'm so proud of her...:) She approves of ICR2 because it lets you drive backwards around the track and through the pits. Should I get her Destruction Derby for Xmas? ;) But F1? "Did Hill win again?" is about the only thing she says, but she DOES like Jacques and I think she is beginning to see how well he is doing his first year out and that, however slim, he has a shot at the championship (that is up for debate, but I'm glad she followed him from IndyCar to F1). Plus, the fact she knows who Damon Hill is means she is farther along than she'd like to admit! :) Kyle

I guess I'm fortunate in that I have an incredibly reasonable wife, who: A. Likes computers and computer games (we play quake and Duke3d all night sometimes--yes it does get pretty ***). B. Likes Racing (though she is starting to show signs of getting sick of ESPN2 and SPEEDVISION on 24hrs a day). She's raced Nascar w/ me, (I've got a few P133s w/ wheels), and likes ICR2. And she's done some racing w/ F1GP2. I think the key is to try and get your wife behind the wheel and give her encouragement. If she still doesn't approve, go out and get another one. <g>. Los

Will you never stop? | | He quickly hits the pause-button. :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) I've spoiled at least one terrific lap at Interlagos due to unexpected and sudden third-party/significant-other intervention. But I'm lucky, `my private property' in the house is the room on the top-level floor. As long as I'm not putting the equipment in the living room, we're both happy. My wife is having a hard time already when I'm watching real-life Formula 1 (qualifying, warm-up and race) on TV -- sometimes I plug in a headphone to the TV set. Marriage works out best if both partners continue their lifes to be just a little bit unmarried. --[ Edwin ]-- -- Dept. of Computer Science, Utrecht University, The Netherlands [WHOIS: ehk3] -------------------- http://www.cs.ruu.nl/people/edwin/ -----------------------
On Fri, 2 Aug 1996 11:59:04 +0100, Martin Granberg <snips> I'm in a slightly odd situation. I have _never_ learnt to drive a real car (yes, really), whilst my wife really likes driving (very, very fast!). I tried to get her interested in ICR but she didn't find my flight sim oriented yoke / pedal setup realistic enough (as it doesn't suit right foot breaking & there's not enough movement in the "wheel"). I'm considering getting a ECCI CDS or GP500. Problem is though, if I get something that realistic, she might never let me get on the game!! And yes, I also crash whenever she comes into the room. She just doesn't believe that I'm actually quite OK at ICR & GP2! Richard

I am lucky enough to have been to Monaco a couple of times for the GP. The only way I got my Girlfriend interested in the game was to take her on a virtual tour of the town (ie This is where I sit, thats a good bar on the left and they would not let me in the front door of that hotel etc) As a short term tactic it worked ok, but now she still can't stand the game, and she wants me to take her to Monaco next year! btw Has anybody used an MSC Multi System Wheel long term. I've just bought one and am not sure if will take the abuse! David

I was on my last lap leading at AI in a championship race, Schumaker about 6 seconds behind followed by Dammon Hill, Wife came home after shopping, turned on the ***y light, sprayed some bug spray at some ***roach, eyes started watering, light was bugging me, oh no to hard into the corner, spin off into the sand trap, back in 5th getting onto the track wham hit by another car, I think it was that jap bloke but then again unlikely he was that high up in the ranks but it ended my race, the engine puttered and puffed and stopped :( Oh well, least I know the circuit well now......another hour or so and I should be able to be back to where I was.... Jesus, YES! Right now I'm laughing behind my desk at work, remembering the incident that happened yesterday: I was driving in Interlagos, had loaded the game state for the Nth time :(. Finally I got it all right, I was on a FAST lap. When I came to the last curve before the start/end straight, my girlfriend asked me something...and off we went. Then cursing, smashing the keyboard etc the normal procedure. And then I had to use half an hour to convince my girlfriend that YES, YES it was necessery to act like that and YES, YES it is a matter of life and death to BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THOSE CC CARS. Ah, that felt good. To know I'm not alone, you know ;) Joonas : I think we should start sending in good tricks to make our girlfriends/wifes : understand that we really have to race GP2. Wow!! Where did you find your wife, at a race meeting!? Some of us aren't quite as lucky, maybe when I get a set of pedals and steering wheel I can convince my wife to do a few laps and help her understand that to get within a couple of seconds of those best times you need a lot of free time... :)

I found that a TV in the "simulation room" solved everything - she's happy watching that, and I'm happy with my sims (and headphones of course) :-)

No, can't be done unless you have more than one computer. My girlfriend at first didn't like computer games, but after I showed her a few games (MOO, Warlords2, etc.), she is instantly hooked. However, now she is playing with the ONLY computer at home so much that I end up having less time with my ICR2 practices. Philip

My girlfriend doesn't understand at all, even though she is a Formula One fan. Once a sphere of life has been transfered onto CDrom her eyes glaze over and that special spark of life leaves her carcass. I tried showing her Civ 2 saying, look, its intellectual and you can learn all about history, blah blah, but she wouldn't buy it. These days I get severely chastised if the computer is on and she is even in the house. The equation in her mind, after a year or so of putting up with me, is this: computer=trivial, time-wasting, dull. I wouldn't mind but, in an attempt to humour me, show willing, find some interest in my "hobby" as she so quaintly puts it, she decided that she liked Demolition Derby (of all things) and made me buy it for her, along with some crappy steering wheel set up. Has she played it? Has she ***y. I have never accepted the claim that people who play computer games are sad and have no social life, no partners, no spouses, etc. Loads of us have. How do the rest of you cope?
Bill Pierpo 10 Aug 1996#332847
Come on man you know you wanted that steering wheel. I divorced her and bought a new PC.
