Cyrix Ok with GP2 ?

Hi all, I am considering getting a cyrix 150+ 686 motherboard, I'm curious whether it's been tested with GP2.. Anybody out there with both (GP2 and a cyrix product) ? Should I take the risk ? I heard there were some incompatibilities, but the price is right ! TIA ! Greg.

It's half the price of a P166 here...And use an Asus motherboard with it. Perfect combination. PS: It's no risk to buy other processors than Intel. There are more people in this world knowing how to create a processor. I use this system for 2 months now *without* any problems. Bye Robert

Well, I had problems with a Cyrix processor running a few games. Aces of the Deep was one, but I can't remember the other. I'm not too sure I *trust* a Cyrix chip... ...but that's just ME. ________ Eldred Pickett I am NOT paranoid. And why are you always watching me?!?

I have been running a cyrix 686-120 for a month or so and haven't had too many problems. I get freezes under X-windows in Linux, but I can't narrow that down to the processor as yet. As for quake, it runs flawlessly, though not as fast as I would like. I can't really play at any res above 320x200 without getting lag in the sound. The FPU performance on the cyrix isn't as good as the P rating that the CPU claims (ie. a 686-120 does NOT perform like a P5-150 when it comes to FP performance). It flies on NFS, though. If I can just get my paws on F1GP2, I could test it out, too. I think I'll call SH right now. Keith

I have the 6x86 P150 and it works perfectly (with GP2 too). here are my details: System: Windows NT 3.51 & Dos 6.2 Processor type and speed: Cyrix 6X86 P-150 (120 MHz) RAM: 24 Mb CACHE:256 Kb PBCache Video card: Diamond Stealth 64 PCI (3001 ? can't remember exactly) Video RAM: 1 Mb DRAM Detail in VGA: absolutely all on Frame rate in VGA: 21.3 Detail in SVGA: everything else on but sky texture Frame rate in SVGA: 16 (no good enough, must lose some datails. Get easily about 20 fps with still lots of details on) Input controller used: keyboard (old champion I am) Sound card: SB 16 Any brief comments on set-up: Greeting Toni
Cyrix do make nice processors at the moment, but time will tell if there is no risk. So far I have always gone with compatibility and stuck with Intel, but the price of Cyrix CPUs makes them attractive just now - let's see what Intel's forthcoming price cuts do to that. Since you haven't had any problems, can I assume you don't play Quake...? :) Cheers! That's bullshit. I run Quake at vid_mode 10, never had problems! I also use Aces of the Deep, without any problems. The Cyrix is 100% compatible with everything. But, if you want to pay twice as much, go ahead!!! Robert

Well, I tried Aces of the Deep, and it runs fine. Do you think they spent millions of dollars to create a new processor, without knowing what to do? Think again... Robert.

I play quake (just got the full version today!) on a Cyrix 6x86 P166+ parked on a Supermicro Triton II board and have no problems at all running quake in hi-res. Lower res than I could get on a pentium I am sure but a small price to pay for the improved performance in all my other apps (not to mention the cost savings). BTW prior to this board/processor I had an intel 90 MHz pentium and can now run Quake in a higher resolution with equal framerates. Take care, Chris

About 20 fps in SVGA with most details on, runs fine... Robert
One caveat about Cyrix 6x86 chips: their integer performance is great for the money, but stay away from them if you do any 3D rendering on your machine - Cyrix's FPU performance is lousy, and will be a performance downgrade from just about any Pentium. If you only play games on the machine, the Cyrix is a good chip (except for those games already noted). Rick

Lets keep a little perspective here. No, my 166+ doesnt run FPU intensive games such as quake as fast as an Intel 166, but that doesnt mean it runs badly. In fact, it runs great. ( well, the 1280x1024 mode runs like shit :-) ). There are some that say it wont run some applications that check for the intel trademark, such as Autocad, but this also is not true, i run acad 13 no problem. DOS stuff may be different, i havnt tried. The bottom line is, Intel has a 10~20% speed advantage in FPU operations, the cyrix 5~10% faster in everything else, including a full10% in "normal" graphics apps. You can look at prices and decide what kind of operation is more important to you. If there are incompatibilities, im gunna sue microsoft, since the win95 logo is stamped right on the dang cpu :-) ps.. If you buy a 6x86 make sure you get a GOOD fan/heatsink, this puppy runs twice as hot as a regular pentium

Mircoprose spent a lot of money on GP2, and THAT has bugs...<g> Do THEY know what to do? ________ Eldred Pickett I am NOT paranoid. And why are you always watching me?!?
The Cyrix isn't 5-10% faster in "everything" else, it executes certain non-FPU instructions faster than a Pentium, and certain ones slower. Whether it is faster or slower depends upon exactly what you are doing. There's no doubt though that at the price/performance point the chips slot into, they are VERY attractive at the moment. Let's see what Intel does about that on August 1st.... I may have my first Cyrix on Aug 2nd! :) Cheers! Well, you just got lucky. I had a guy from Sierra TECH SUPPORT tell me that Aces would NOT run on a Cyrix... But YOU may have an update that fixed the problem. ________ Eldred Pickett I am NOT paranoid. And why are you always watching me?!?

To save you a call.. here's a section of the FAQ that I will be posting in a few seconds: The hardware detection phase may incorrectly identify Pentium Pro, Cyrix 686 and Intel MMX machines as using an "Unknown" processor type. Simply ignore this message, continue with the installation and the game should run fine. Best, Gabriel/Spectrum HoloByte & MicroProse support Official GP2 page http://www.microprose.com/gp2/
