Forza previews spark console versus PC sim debate
Previews of Forza Motorsport led David G Fisher to predict the next consoles would end PC racing sims, a view shared by some and mocked by others who cited CART Precision Racing's failure and gamepad limitations. Posters noted Logitech and Microsoft Xbox wheels were coming and debated whether Microsoft's shared Xbox-PC development would blend the markets.

That's what they all--including me--said abt. CART Precision Racing. (The
Forza screenies ARE fabulous, tho....)

hehe...true
Sounds and looks fantastic. I think the next versions of the X-Box and PS2
will mark the official end of PC racing sims. I won't miss all the hassle
either (and I've actually been very lucky with computer sims).

now if the XBOX just had a decent wheel, like the Logitech the PS2 has, it
is awesome and I only use it for the PC

I read, through a link from the Forza article, that MS has a wheel on the
way for Forza and other racing sims. Didn't give a date for release.

Really? I didn't see any images of '60s F1 cars in those screen shots :)

I'm going to go with no. The "best" console racer doesn't even have damage
modeling.

I tend to agree with David. The fact that two decent SIMs are out on
platforms marks the start of a paradigm shift in the market for higher end
products aimed at enthusiast adults as well as kids.
This is a good thread to mark in your diary for review in a couple of years
to see which way things went. I expect by then that a fully network virtual
sky full of flight simulators will be available on the x-box and competing
platform devices.
I should mention that I have never owned a gaming console (except for a pong
game in the 70s), as until now I have relied on high end PCs for my gaming
requirements.
The following facts I believe weigh the scales in favour of consoles in the
future:
1. The next round of console hardware will have native HDTV support - this
translates in up to 1920 x 1080 resolution, so kills the argument that PCs
offer superior graphics
2. There is an increasing gulf between the CPU/GPU requirements for gaming,
and most other functions except for video editing. We know the the "avalon"
3D interface for "longhorn" (next version of Windows client) and other 3D
interfaces for open source clients will drive the GPU requirements up to the
similar levels for high end games on PCs, however a lot of the bleeding edge
(read:expensive) 3D rendering is gaming specific.
3. High end video cards are now costing much more than a complete console
system, and more that complete low end PC systems.
Let's see what happens.

er...no
I'm sorry, but how much attention to "realizm" is there necessary to produce
a so called life like sim, that is controlled by a @#$% joypad?

True - any Xbox driving sim is bound to fall short 'cuz of the controller
issues. There is no decent wheel for the Xbox...is there? The PS2 rules
AFAIC 'cuz you can use almost any PC/USB wheel...at least w. GT3
and--soon--GT4.

Agreed but the stock Xbox controller is far superior to the stock PS2
controller for precision braking/throttle in racing games. It should be -
they pretty much stole the idea from Sega with their Dreamcast controller
which was designed with racing games like F355 Challenge in mind. Actually,
so did Nintendo with the Gamecube controller.

Do you mean that it has shoulder triggers vs a single stick for
throttle/brake? Or does it actually have a greater number of bits
for increased resolution? Seems like steering in PGR2 still has
relatively too few levels of output. My steering there tends to
be closer to PWM than analog. Still, it works.

Two...decent... sims! omg stop the press everybody. I'm sorry but it'll be
DECADES until we see not a shift, but a blend of both market. Look at every
high-end product for non-mainstream games, look at the niche markets, etc...
There's a reason Microsoft doesn't have FS2004 for their X-Box. Or that
there's no Falcon 3 neither <G> "Mommy, why does it take 15 minutes of
pressing buttons before I take off ".

That one, and lotsa other DGF-inducted threads tehehe.
It's not the PC that will become consoles, it's the consoles who will become
PC's.

High end video cards are not only for gaming.

Disagree. MS's initiatives will mean it'll be easier to develop sims
simultaneously for the Xbox and PCs, so Sony will have to follow suit. The
demographics of consoles are trending upward into PC territory. Console and
PC "entertainment" s/w sales are abt. equal (50 mil/yr.), but developers
spend roughly 10 as much on consoles. PCs will become a niche market,
consoles will co-opt PC games, and brainless console games (e.g., side
scrollers) will migrate to cell phones. In fact, it's already happening.
