I downloaded this patch this morning. It recommends deleteing and
reinstalling icr2 before patching. Ok no big deal. I reinstall the
game and then the patch takes about about 1/2 hour to install, Ok no
big deal. The intro and intro screen have changed to a pretty cool
set. I went to put my Driver info back in and it says "unable to
write driver info" even if I don't change anytthing. I stopped at
that point and tried to play the game. Hey it actually works but I
doubt that the only problem is the driver info stuff. If I found a
bug within 5 minutes, I wonder how many others??????????

Notable threadICR2 1.00 to 1.02 patch appears on Hawaii
A user reported that the long-awaited IndyCar Racing II 1.00 to 1.02 DOS patch had been posted on Papyrus's Hawaii server, and others complained it was not on a website. Readers mirrored it via FTP and web pages until Sierra put it up officially a few days later. Early users found the patch made driver files read-only, fixable with attrib, and reported some install errors.

I would suggest to check the file attributes. I'll bet that they are read

Anyone who has downloaded this file and has ftp capabilities you can ftp
the file anonymously to my IPS site. Just send me some e-mail telling
you have done so and I will move it over to a publicly accessable
address is plastered all over this post :-)).
"put" the file at ftp.teleport.com in the in.coming directory. And to
state the obvious, don't forget to switch to "binary" before "putting".
Everybody thanks you in advance.....

for some reason it makes the drivers2.txt in the cars95 directory a
read only file, just attrib -r it and it will be ok.

Tim, if you've read r.a.s. much recently, you'd know that the Sierra website is
a pile of ***whose webmaster sleeps at the keyboard all day.
Well, us DOS v1.0.0 guys have been waiting for Sierra to release the DOS v1.0.1
patch for almost a month now (it's been available since the DOS
v1.0.1/Win95/Mac version came out in stores). Sierra never did (the rumor is
that Sierra wanted to get as many DOS v1.0.0 owners to break down and pay full
price for the new version at the stores).
Maybe Papyrus finally got miffed at Sierra's lack of customer service and
decided to post v1.0.2 on their own BBS (hey, it's over at Papyrus HQ, so it's
tough for Sierra to police them from Bellevue, WA) to make us loyal Papyrus
customers wax nostalgic on the days when Papyrus was their own company who
prided themselves on helping the customer out ASAP (unlike Sierra in recent
months).
*sigh*...the good ol' days... :-)

The drivers2.txt file becomes read only. You need to turn the read only

<...>
I think you are on to something here. The fact is, they renigged on
Rick Genter's promise (supported by the comments of one other old-days
Papyrus guy, if I heard correctly), that the new CD would be available
to us for a mailing fee. Now Sierra supposedly wants $15 dollars AND
the old CD. I don't want to give up my old CD: >>>I don't trust the
new one!!!!<<<! It may be worse than the old one, as is apparently
worse that the patched DOS version 1.0.2. And $15 dollars isn't a
mailing fee- it is the going price for most of Sierra's products in
the Sierra Bargain bins at Walden Software and CompUSA, you know, the
older stuff sold without the manuals or packaging. $5 and the front
cover of the manual should be plenty for sierra to keep the promise.
What do they care. I imagine they'll care a whole lot more about
looking better with NASCAR2, since NASCAR is probably the reason they
bought the Papyrus to begin with. ICR2 is a drop in the bucket, for
those relatively few of us that love that sort of racing too.
This is a rational reason for why it may have been released on Hawaii.
My first impulse was/is to think that is was just another way to wring
a few cents out of us, insult-to-injury, but I suppose it is possible
that it is a rebellious kick from tethered but formerly great company.
I don't blame Papyrus, they'd proved themselves for many years, and
even ICR2, for all of it's head and heart- aches, shows lots and lots
of loving, intense effort at something they believed in.
From what I understand, even Sierra doesn't own Sierra- my local
software store guy says they got bought by a local CT company, one in
which the CEO didn't even know how to run a game on a computer, had to
be shown after-the-takeover what the product actually is.
The "Driver Info" is easily fixed by changing the file attributes from
Read Only. I had the same "problem." I don't think that qualifies as a
bug, if I can fix it. :)

That is, fortunately, a bug you can completely repair yourself. Just
do a "attrib -r cars95.dat" at the DOS prompt in the directory with
your cars (icr2\cars\cars95\). I think that is the command. Point is,
your cars95.dat file was made "read only" by the patch, so you need to
make it writeable.
Minor flaw- other than that, I think the patch is a winner.
Took forever to apply the patch on my system too- in retrospect, it
might have been better to use smartdrv before doing the patch- I don't
know for sure, but it sure seems the patch was written with lousy
disk-buffering. Hey, it is done, we have the patch.
I downloaded the patch yesterday with much jiy. When I got home last
night, I set it running, and hit problems. 1st of all, it wouldn't
install the new qualifiying setups, because it couldn't find the oold
ones to delete (qualace, qualfast, qualeasy), and it then stopped with an
error message. So I thoiught I would try playing anyway. At first all
seemed fine I could drive around NAzereth without the backend flying
round, the little re light worked, and the rev counter didn't mess up. I
reaslised however that univbe hadn't been installed, so I went back to
setup, installe dunivbe, and went back to the game. I noticed straight
away that the rev light was on constantly. Then the rev coubter started
glitching, and then the rev light started flickering. At that point I
swore very loudly, and deleted ICR2 from my hard drive, I suspect it
could be monts before it goes back.
I'm not convinced this is the patch we have all been after, as there was
no file which listed the changes, and Rick said the patch was going to be
1.0.1, and this says 1.0.2. I think we need more info from Papy.
Chris FIsher
you lot test it first, I'm not wasting another 30 quid on a buggy program.
The patch looked familiar to me when I ran it.... sure enough. It is the same
utility that DESCENT v1.4 used when it passed out an upgrade in the same manner.
Yes, Smartdrv will greatly increase the speed at which it does it's work.
BTW, you can't blame Sierra or Papyrus too much for this one. It doesn't look like
they wrote the utility. They just used it and decided not to "re-invent the wheel"
Aren't you glad? It would have taken 3 more months to get to us......
I haven't tried HUGE smartdrv caches, but didn't notice much improvement between
2MB and 6MB cache when I tested the Descent version.
Just don't run it with NO cache.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
From the Software Company's view, there is a big plus to using it: You only need
to send out the code that requires changing instead of whole files.
+ It lets you guarantee the program is already installed before applying the patch.
+ No one can get the patch and manipulate it into a running program.
+ The patch can fit on one floppy instead of "fixed" files taking up 3 to 4...

I guess I was hit harder than I thought by the HandOfGod at Cleveland.
I coulda swore I updated my website to include the real patch
(icr100_2.zip). Apparently I did not get the correct file updated on my

Since Sierra On-Line finally put the patch out on the internet my
webpage now points directly to the "official" 1.00 -> 1.02 patch. Since
I was running out of disk space at my ISP, I have removed the file that
was reached by the direct ftp URL. The last time I checked Sierra's web
page could not successfully access their own file. Here are the direct
ftp URL's for the official patch:
ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/sierra/patches/sports-sim/icr100_2.exe
ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/sierra/patches/sports-sim/icr101_2.exe
The 1st URL is for the 1.00->1.02 patch and the 2nd is for those who
want to patch the latest DOS/Win95 release.
Again, I am sorry for any trouble I may have caused by my earlier
"brain-fade".

: Thanks for all your efforts, and please let us know what you mean

: be a possible "wrong patch" out there.
Until the real patch surfaced on Hawaii, there was a "quick" fix
floating about. This included actual files for about 4 version 1.01
files (INDYCAR.EXE, OBJECTS.DAT, ROLS.DAT, ???). When Cie made the
patch available at this site, I could have swore I updated my site to
include the "real" patch icr100_2.zip, however a couple of days later I
checked and it still pointed to the "quick" fix. The icr100_2.zip or
icr100_2.exe actually requires a full installation from the CD-ROM and
patches many files, including many track files and the cars95 files. If
you went through this last process, then you have the real patch.
BTW: Do you have a valid e-mail address? All replies to the above
always bounce as undeliverable?

Can someone help clear up something for me? Last week (7/13/96) Cie Phillips posted
the URL to his web page for the 1.02 patch to ICR2 (that he copied from Hawaii). The file name is icr100_2.zip.
I downloaded it and hadn't gotten around to installing it at home, then I saw that the
patch was on Sierra's site. When I downloaded that version I noticed that the file
name was icr100_2.exe.
What's the difference between these two files. Is the .exe version just a
self-extracting file?
What gives? What did I miss?

To the best of my knowledge (based on reports from others), the only
difference is that the Sierra .exe version is self-extracting and
includes a README.BAT which will display the readme file that comes in
both versions.
