<<Charging $54 for 2 tracks and Time of Day racing is a CROCK! Maybe you should have offered it to regged owners of the original for $10 or maybe $15. Even with your $15 rebate I'm still BURNED for $40 plus the $52 I paid for the original so I have $90 wrapped up in your game and you MADE me send in my old NFS CD to get the refund so I cannot even sell that copy to ease the hurt!>> Weeelll... EA has an offer for registered owners of NFS to get NFS SE for $24.95 by calling their (800) number. That was how I got it. If you still have the receipt for NFS SE, you can use the voucher supplied with it, send back your original NFS and end up with an investment of $10.95 additional. All you have to do is read. I was a bit hesitant to get NFS SE after reading all the complaints but I did anyway. Sure enough - I experienced the same problems that everyone was complaining about - namely the T1/T2 wheel not working correctly. What EA has done if actually FIX the problem that forced us T1/T2 users to have to obtain the adapter to play the first NFS. NFS SE now supports dual joystick inputs OR joystick/pedal combo. This means you can either REMOVE the adapter you had to use for NFS or You can run the JCU.EXE program that EA was so nice to include and choose the T1/T2 input device and DISABLE the X and R axis options from the table. If you disable those then the game runs fine with the adapater in place. By running the JCU program you will create a CFG file which NFS will then read and use for calibration. Without this CFG file you will see the shifter AND the 2 vertical bar graphics (brake/gas) which all need to be configured. HEY EA - if you are reading this.... Charging $54 for 2 tracks and Time of Day racing is a CROCK! Maybe you should have offered it to regged owners of the original for $10 or maybe $15. Even with your $15 rebate I'm still BURNED for $40 plus the $52 I paid for the original so I have $90 wrapped up in your game and you MADE me send in my old NFS CD to get the refund so I cannot even sell that copy to ease the hurt!

Hi I think it is better to buy the NFS-SE at $24.95 from EA. Then sell your original to someone and don't use that $15 rebate. I just sold my NFS original for $30 :)
> If > you still have the receipt for NFS SE, you can use the voucher supplied > with it, send back your original NFS and end up with an investment of > $10.95 additional. All you have to do is read. If I want to be VERY sarcastic, I'd say "all you have to do is read": "This offer is not valid with any other offer from Electronic Arts." These are not the exact words, but You get the idea. Since You have already accepted the $24.95 offer from EA, you can pretty much forget about the $15 voucher. READ WHAT!?!?! Yes - it would have been nice if EA had MAILED me something since I took the time to mail them my reg card for the first game. I didn't even know the game was out until I saw it on the shelf. At least ACCESS software tells me when new stuff is coming out and they are having special offers/promos. I should be able to expect the same from a company 10x larger than ACCESS. or maybe not.... oh well - its only money...what else am I gonna do with it except spend it...

<<READ WHAT!?!?!>> <<Yes - it would have been nice if EA had MAILED me something since I took the time to mail them my reg card for the first game.>> Apparently they got one over on you then or "misfiled" a few people. I, and a few others, received a postcard in the mail giving notification that registered users get the $24.95 "upgrade" price, which they actually sent me the entire version of the game. Yeah sure but what about us living in countries like Australia? Assume they have distributor here how long is it going to take for you to mail your copy of NFS to them and get your money back? In Australia they didn't mention any cash back offers on the box. I am think about buying NFS SE but I hate to open the box and see no cash back vouchers. Anyone in Australia bought NFS SE? --Ray

Ray In Australia (Brisbane) it ONLY costs $49.95 (AUS). Now for someone who doesn't own the original (I have the PSX version) this is a bargain! Wayne

What I did (since I LOVE my adapter) is to run JCU and make sure Z and R were disable and save my settings. This creates a control.cfg file which is then read into NFS and you can then calibrate correctly. With R and Z disabled you will NOT see the 2 green bar graphics to the side of the shifter.

buttons don't work, not allowing me to complete calibration under NFSSE. Also, if yours works under Win95, what are your Joystick settings under Control Panel (I'm set for Custom/2 axis/4 button). Thanks, Randy Pascarella
Mark Smi 12 Jul 1996#325624
<snip> I don't play from Win95 - I reboot to DOS and load UNIVBE 5.2 for incredible frame rates (better than Windows will give you using DirectX) I don't (and never have) used the buttons for NFS or NFS SE. I use them for reverse in ICR and NASCAR. Leave em alone and it should all work. The shifter is button 1/2 on joystick 1 and requires no setup - you must define it in the controls section if you choose manual shifting though...

Did you send the registration card for NFS to EA? I did. I received an offer in the mail for NFSSE for 24.95 and 4.00 for S and H. and I got to keep the NFS.

I know I'm opening up the proverbial "can of worms", but what don't you like about NFS SE? I have the original, don't touch it much, but was wondering what differences there were and if it was the same game with a new name. Kyle P.S. Please don't say that it "sux", "sucks", etc. I really am looking for a decent response. :)

I have the original, don't touch it much, but ?was wondering what differences there were and if it was the same game ?with a new name. One of the biggest differences you will find is that once you win the tournament twice, each track will now have 3 modes: normal, mirrored, and rally. The 'mirror mode' does not consist in racing the track backwards, per se, but mirrors the turns so that what used to be a left, is now a right, etc.. These changes are just enough to render your knowledge of the track useless, and provides a whole new challenge (effectively doubling the number of courses). Perhaps the original poster had not discovered this welcome feature, but to my mind, this alone makes NFS SE worth purchasing. Another, equally notable difference is the addition of 2 new tracks, both of which are fantastic. Further, there are the options to race at different times of day (read: in different light), as well new, improved music which may now be played while racing. Lastly, 8-player network play has been added, the menus have been improved, the tournament format has been changed for the better, and both Win95 *and* DOS executables are included, as is a great joystick configuration utility. I'm sure there are other improvements I'm overlooking, but I think that should be a sufficient rebuttal to the unsupported notion that NFS SE is a "lemon"... --Evan -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- -.- - = Internet Top 100 Video Games Charts ? = - New U.S. mirror! http://www.tiac.net/users/top100/vidgames.html ***Just e-mail me for the latest Top 100 Chart!***

I also purchased NFSse for the extra two tracks and night driving mostly. Buying it for $35 at Best Buy and after a $15 rebate that sounded pretty reasonable (better if you sold NFS for $25!). Anyway, after TRYING to load NFSse I could not get past the LOAD DIRECTX screen without having to reboot. I have Close Combat which I believe also uses DirectX and it runs fine. Cirrus Logic tech support is looking into it for me (driver update?)So if you do upgrade be SURE there is a return policy!

<snip> How does it suck......let me count the ways.... Substnatial fps loss compared to the original. Modem HEAD to HEAD impossible to play (2 seconds per frame) SINGLE RACE modem play so jerky that I continually bounce from side to side like a damn pinball. A nice 3 second lag from the time I turn my T2 wheel to the time my car decides to actually turn. You are FORCED to HANG UP and RECONNECT if I want to quit any race before crossing the finish line. All my USER tracks are now non-playable. And there are probably more but I gave up and burned a copy of the original NFS CD and am now back to normal. Oh yeah - I have a NFS SE for sale - $25 takes this CD home... email me if you are a glutton for punishment....
><snip> >> What exactly is wrong with NFS SE? >How does it suck......let me count the ways.... > Substnatial fps loss compared to the original. Yep. No doubt about it. Haven't tried this. But I don't doubt it. Hmmm. Mine isn't that bad but certainly worse than the original. As long as I disable the music (song) I get almost as good as the original on the original tracks, but the two new ones are worse. [other stuff deleted]. My machine is an IBM Thinkpad 760CD (P90), 24M of memory 4xCD drive. Runs the original great, but SE just doesn't cut it. One of the main reaosns I bought it was because of the night/day drving touted on the box. But I'll be ***ed if I can see how to turn it on/off in the manual or the options screens. Anybody know how ? Or is it the Australian/NZ version just doesn't have this feature (even though it's written on the ***ing box) ? As well, once I get past the DirectX installation for Win95, the PC dies and requires a power cycle. We tried this on 2 thinkpads, same problem. DOS mode installation shit itself too in the same manner, until I disable my EMM386 from loading (I since found a small note in the book about not using emm managers !). The original didn't mind it at all. To summarise: 1) Worse performance. 2) Can't install in Win95. 3) Difficult install in DOS. 4) No sign of day/night driving mode. 5) Race music too soft to hear when it's turned on (and at full volume). 6) Select a song of NONE, you get no music at all even in menus. So, all in all, a waste of $49 (aus) bucks. And a pity, since I loved the original. Pete
Ray Spea 01 Aug 1996#330885
I hope this will help you. In order to turn night and day on/off, you must be in the track viewing mode. When in this mode, you will see time of day at the bottom of the screen (just after number of lapes). Just use the enter or space bar to change the time of day. Ray
