Did anyone else see Richard Petty playing NASCAR Racing last night on ESPN 2 at the Daytona USA grand opening. He was on the Daytona track, looks like there is an official one out there but not for us, at least for now.

I saw that one too. Makes you wonder how THAT happened... Maybe Mr. France could tell us... --Spyder

I had noticed it also in the current edition of Sierras INTERACTION mag. Did'nt anybody else see the huge blueprint one of the developers was holding , it was clearly an architect rendering of DAYTONA. I didnt want to FIRE this place up so I never mentioned it , but now its out and I must say I do not believe that we will ever race on the track without going to Daytona USA and doing it there. It just seems to finally make sense of why the Daytona folks were not willing to release the license to PAPY. They had plans for it all along , please remember that PAPY has known about this as well , and they never said a word the whole time all of the pleas were coming for the track. Now that it has been seen by the general puplic we get this "OH Yes by the way there is a Daytona track". Exuse me if I sound miffed , because , well I am miffed. I am not very happy at all with all of the recent passing of events. Sega my Foot!! James

James, You couldn't be more wrong. I'm sorry you're miffed, but it's misguided. We are working very closely with NASCAR. We also worked closely with ISC to do the Daytona USA exhibit. The truth of the matter is that THEY appoached US to do the exhibit & the track. Does this mean that we have the rights to use it in the game? No. Sega has the license until April '97. Does this mean that we would like to get it? Certainly we want to get it. And we're trying. The fact that we don't have it in the game now has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that Sega has the exclusive license, and NOTHING to do with any incorrect thought that ISC doesn't want the track in the Papyrus game. I mean, come on... what you're suggesting is that ISC is trying to capitalize on the excitiment/hype of the Sega/Daytona issue in order to get more people to visit the new theme park? You really think ISC needs any help in getting people to go there? As for you comment that Papyrus knew about the Daytona USA pavillion & we never said anything about it here on r.a.s.. 1) Of course we knew... we wrote the thing. 2) For P/R reasons, nothing was said about ANY of the pavillions at Daytona USA before the opening. That's pretty much standard practice when you're opening something that big. You don't hear us up here talking about our product plans a year from now either, do you? Excuse me for going off on this a little... it's nothing personal, James. But I don't want this type of incorrect informaton to get out of hand. Ed Martin Producer, Series Director NASCAR Racing League Papyrus / Sierra On-Line, Inc.
writes Hi James So Papyrus should come along and say "Guess what guys? We've got DAYTONA!!!!! No, course you can't have it" - they'd be ***ed! Look at the hassle Jed got. So now Papyrus have given Daytona a version of NASCAR Racing, including the Daytona track - by the admission of everyone who's seen it, it looks VERY nice. So Daytona are grateful to Papyrus. So Daytona can see what excellent work Papyrus do. So Daytona can see that just perhaps it would be a good idea to license this track to Papyrus / NRL / Hawaii. Rome wasn't built in a day, but it's there now - give them time, I can't see that Papyrus have done anything wrong here, it's a shrewd move. Cheers! man, just where do you get your information, anyway? you're just plain wrong. do you *really* think that we would withhold the Daytona track if we had the rights to distribute it with NASCAR Racing all this time? do you *really* think that we've just been pulling the wool over your eyes? is that what we get for being forthright and honest about the whole thing? we didn't even have to say as much as we did. sheesh. "exclusive agreement" means exclusive. everyone else is "excluded". the time trials project is a special, separate attraction. Steven Travers Associate Producer Papyrus Design Group

Ed, I've been trying to put this point across a thousand times but not many seem to get it. All, in this whole Daytona track thing, including mine, ISC are not the bad guys at all. They are very keen to work with Papyrus on the Daytona project and Ed has proved that by stating that ISC came to them. Now, can everybody understand why Andrew Gurtis as ISC asked me not to release my patch? Its pretty obvious that ISC want to allow Papyrus to create Daytona, they just don't want to upset and applecarts before the time comes. After dialouge with ISC I was aware what was going on and decided to play the game. Its just a political thing. Ed, good luck with the whole Daytona thing. I hope you get the gig and that The Pits and my little project doesn't***anything up. Jed The Pits [link lost in import] [link lost in import]

Believe me, Bill France and the NASCAR execs want nothing more than to extend the reach of this great racing series into the future. And they are masters of MARKETING ! Anything that will bring more fans into the sport, they will try and do. So Daytona will come, just be patient. -

Papyrus is now showcasing their product to the powers that be and now that they have a foot in the door, this can make getting the license for Daytona easier. Papyrus knows we want Daytona real bad. I'm sure we'll see it someday. It's frustrating when it's LEGAL ***holding down progress.

Ed, thank you very much for the reply. I feel better now and appreciate the time you took to write your reply. Next time I will take a few breaths and calm down before spewing anymore hate and discontent. James

said... >>I agree, Ed what is the status of Indy for Nascar??? >We are also working on getting Indy, but nothing to report yet. Knowing Tony George (president of Indianapolis Motor Speedway), he probably won't give Papyrus the rights to do Indy for NASCAR unless Papyrus promises that ICR3 will have IRL cars and tracks instead of CART cars and tracks. :-) (?) -- +------------------+--------------------------------------------+ | G.
