DX486/100? P90? Anyone check out Microprose site lately? Can you believe
this shit. Well there goes most of their market. What do they think people
will do ? Go out ( or should I say RUN out ) and buy the latest greatest
processor? What do they think we are IDIOTS. We have to pick up where they
have left off, their lazy shoddy coding means we have to decrease our bank
accounts? I THINK NOT!!!!!!

You're a bit late, but yes, the requirements did change a while back.
Better then than afterwards, since the complaints would be about how
misleading the minimum requirements were and how could SH-MPS do that
to us because its totally unplayable on a 286 with 640K... ya da da ya
da da...
Anyway, I doubt we'll ever see everyone happy in either case, but it
is definitely the software entertainment industry that is driving and
pushing the requirements for the personal computer marketplace. That,
I'm afraid, is your future as well as the same fate for the rest of
us.

It's all ***I have a Cyrix 686 150+ and my two friends have P166's
with all the good stuff fast g cards edo ram etc. And it's still chunky
on all our machines I think it was coded in basic!.
What do you want? Some stripped down version? This game is going to be
like ICR2 and Nascar and ..... We will be playing it for a long time. And
you will have to upgrade eventually. When Nascar came out, I was running
on an old 486-33 (non-local bus). Yes, I was mad when Nascar came out and
I couldn't run it...and ICR for that matter too. But, now I am happy.
With these programs. I had to get a new computer because everything
wasn't running on it by then. It never ends. You will never have a fast
enough computer. The programs get bigger and better. Otherwise, we all
would still be playing Indianapolis.
A computer becomes obsolete when you take it out of the box.

Well, it's one of the main reasons I'm intending to upgrade.
I would point out that real-time high quality 3D modelling is one of
the most processor intensive tasks that computers do these days.

I'm running P90 24mg Diamond 3240 2mg Vram $4000.00 CDN latter and Nascar
still won't run with full graphics? You tell me. Is this right? Why should
we pay for someone else's sloppy coding?

Full SVGA graphics with a fast frame rate (with all details on,
640x480) for a texture-mapped, 3D game requires about the equivalent
power to a 200Mhz Pentium. I have a P133 and still have to turn some
details off (for Nascar, Indycar, and I'm sure for GP2 when it comes
out).
Now before you panic and think you'll have to spend *another* grand or
two, think 3D cards. The Rendition card is coming out this summer, and
it looks great. For a few hundred dollars you will be able to upgrade
your Pentium to have that "200Mhz Pentium" performance you need.
None of this is Papyrus fault. If anyone's, it's IBMs for designing
the original PC graphics architecture so poorly.
Joe
I have seen a pre-release version of the game (dont know if its legal
or whatever) on a friends-friends computer, ie pentium75, 16ram and
the game was playable in vga with a lot of the detail turned off at
about 23.1 frames, hopefully the full release will have fixed up some
of the slow frame performance.
Besides, computer hardware is so damm cheap these days!.!
Go out and get ya self a pentium motherboard/cpu, ya deserve it..
Hi
I've read the test in a magazine. A DX266 will be enough to run the game
in VGA with few details, but with a correct animation
Thus confirming for sure that you haven't actually seen a legit version
of the game.
We tested it extensively at Sim Racing News, and it is very playable in
SVGA on even a P-100 - on a P-166 and P-200 it absolutely flies (as it
should do!). You wouldn't have been visiting the "warez" groups and
downloading v0.1a, the totally unoptimised and full of bugs early
version would you? ;)
Cheers!
John

But that will ONLY help you if the game utilizes then 3D acceleration
features of the card. If it is not especially programmed that way, the
card won't make it any faster. As long there is no standard for 3D cards,
I won't buy one.
The modern cards have not that much in common with the "original PC
graphics architecture" (wouldn't that be Hercules? or even worse?). One
could say that there is no "PC graphics architecture" as such, as you can
use different cards. Instead, we have the choice of using the graphics
card we like. And today most people will buy PCI cards. The PCI bus is not
an IBM development, it's from Intel.

Tjark Kalow

Do you program ??
Do you realise how hard it is to do 3D texture maping fast in SVGA and how many
hours it takes .. no mind the light source etc..etc..
I probely guess not!

I agree, lets just wait to see how they run. I have a p133 with 16mb and
a DS 3240...crossing my fingers.

Hi !
An Italian magazine reviewed the localized version of GP2 on a P90 with
16MB of RAM. In VGA full details they got an average frame rate of
17 fps (which is not bad, after all). In SVGA (on the same machine)
with most of the details turned off they got near 15 fps; when they
tried to add all the details (still in SVGA) the frame rate dropped
to 8 fps (sky & asphalt textures were on).
I'm sorry but no other additional details about the machine on which
the game was running were included in the review.
Best,
Roberto
