Flame warCART versus IRL argument after the 1996 Indy 500
A poster urged players to replace Indianapolis with Michigan in their sim seasons and insulted IRL driver Buddy Lazier, which drew angry replies defending Lazier for racing with a broken back. The thread became an argument about CART versus IRL, the crash at the US 500 start, and NASCAR versus F1 popularity. Several posters asked for it to move elsewhere.

This is why NASCAR Racing is now the premier form of automobile racing.
Sure, the old rip about never turning right might be applicable for almost
all of NASCAR's tracks, but you have to admit that the administration,
teams, sponsors and drivers know how to make a racing league work. NASCAR
is the only form of racing for me and everyone can feel confident that a
split will NEVER occur in NASCAR as long as the administration continues to
handle the league as well as it does.

Thats a pretty cold thing to say, sure he probably would not
have won if the CART guys were there but he would have
my admiration just for simply finishing a 500 mile race with
a fractured spine. Or perhaps Vasser & co. would of
wiped him out on the pace lap :>

> show those buttheads of the IRL who we really support! > CART rules. > Buzzy Lazier is a CRIPPLED 2nd rate driver! > Jimmy Vassar rules!: At least the IRL didn't have a crash BEFORE the green that took out
: over half of the field.
The IRL start was so strung-out that there was no chance ANYONE could
tagged the wall. Anyone with a brain woulda yellow-flagged that start
and had them come around again.
: They are all Wine and Cheese racers anyway. "Biff, give me a glass of
: Red wine, and air up the tires while I have a manicure.."
Something tells me that you'd never hear guys like Unser Jr. saying
that. You want to talk about wine and cheese drivers, look at Cheever in
the IRL--he's probably still loaded from his F1 days. Heck he lives/used
to live in Monaco, for heaven's sake. Alboreto, Velez, Jourdain, etc.

With a worldwide audience billions more than NASCAR, many F1 fans would
say you are mistaken there.

BUt he needed two cars to win the friggin race!

I didn't know the Monte Carlos that are driven in NASCAR were front wheel drive...

This is probably one argument that shouldn't take place here on this
newsgroup.

Did you see the phrase "BODY STYLE"????? Duh. Monte Carlos you buy in
the dealer don't have roof flaps, or Ford 9" rear-ends, or 10" wide
tires, or roll-bars, or.....
Mike
Strangely enough, that's one of the things I LIKE about F1 - who wants
to watch the same thing they driver everyday?
F1 is not popular only in Europe, actually in every country in the world
EXCEPT the United States would be more accurate. Brazil has a HUGE F1
following, and even Japan was the country where Senna had most fans
outside Brazil - that's why I said F1 is a much bigger sport than
NASCAR.
Not better, not more skillful - we can't prove either of those one way
or the other. But it is undoubtedly bigger which is what we were talking
about.
Cheers!
John

This is completely irrelevant in open-wheel racing. The brand makes a
huge difference in F1 but, in relative terms, it doesn't in IndyCar.
But as far as I know every NASCAR fan drives some sort of truck
or tractor, or so it seems, hence it is even more irrelevant
in USA's premier racing league. ;-)
I really wonder if "what wins on Sunday, sells on Monday" holds
true today. In F1 and IndyCar definetily not. And in NASCAR the
cars are almost identical in performance, except for Pontiac even
though they have improved, so what wins is due to the driver and
a lot less to the car. Given that I guess Dale Jarret dolls would
sell really well on Monday. :) The worst is that I think NASCAR
fans would buy them. Imagine a bunch of rednecks sitting on your
desk. Ouch!

Two cars - and another driver to intentionally cause a yellow flag to
put Vasser back in the lead lap...
I believe he said BODY STYLE not actual car.
