Saved Hawaii race replays freeze or show cars jumping

Several Hawaii racers found that saved online replays froze, which some linked to the .RPX driver-name file and low memory. Others saw cars disappearing and warping during playback. Charlie Heath of Papyrus explained that each client only receives data for nearby cars, so replays of large fields are incomplete, and suggested moving the RPX file as a workaround while he investigated.

I recently raced a race on Hawaii and wanted to save the replay of the race. Before I exited the race I saved the replay and thought everything was fine. But when I go to view it, it freezes up on my machine. Does anyone know what I did wrong, and has anyone saved hawaii replays succesfully? M. Roberts
I have saved multiple replays successfully with no problem. Wish I could give you more info, -

Been there, done that<g> Maybe it's a memory problem. How much (base/extended) memory do you have. Actually, check your hard drive space. I just remembered I had problems like that, and I discovered my HD was full...<BURP!> ________ Eldred Pickett I am NOT paranoid. And why are you always watching me?!?

Haven't had any trouble saving replays!

The "replay bug" started when Papyrus added the .RPX associated file, that links the saved replay to a file that links the names of the drivers that were in the saved On-line race. A quick fix is to upgrade to 32meg. Not a great solution but, it worked for me. I believe it has something to do with running out of memory space when saving the replay to the HD. Since upgrading to 32meg. I have saved all my HAL races that are 18% to 23% in length, from various tracks and have had no problems. Hmm, when did it change? I've only got 12MB (16 on my other system) and my replays saved fine... ________ Eldred Pickett I am NOT paranoid. And why are you always watching me?!?

I'll look into it. Hadn't seen it, but I've heard of several people having problems, so I suspect there's something broken. If the problem is with the .RPX file, you <might> be able to resolve it by moving the RPX file out of the track directory; if you do this, you won't have driver names and car numbers from the multiplayer race, but you might be able to load the replay. (I'd be interested in hearing about it if this is indeed the case). Charlie Heath Papyrus Design Group

I have a 24 meg machine on a P-133 and replays save fine, but the camera jumps from one car to another a lot, the cars disappear and re-appear, and some cars seem to be accessible for only parts of the race. What's going on? Randy

I've got 16 meg and it saves fine expect when playing back files. Cars disappear and reappear during replay. --- Frank ---
I have NFS and would like to use it without the CD Is there a way to do this, i have a Syquest 135 drive, so the space is not a problem. Thanks Gary H...

O.K., guys, ask yourself these questions about saving your replays: 1. How long was the race, you just saved? 2. How much memory do I have in my system? For a short race, a 16meg. system is fine. If your trying to grab a long race on a 16meg. system, you will usually "MAX" out the 8megs of 16megs your has avaivable for replays. This is where guys are having problems with their saved replays. 3. Not having enough Hard Drive space can be a problem, so, check your free H.D. space, BEFORE logging into the HAWAII system. Don't ya want that killer SERIES replay!! :) If the "camera" jumps around, was there MORE than 10 racers/clients within the race? If there was, yes, the camera will jump around. This is because of the limitation on the Hawaii race server, only able to send YOU, the closest 10-11 racers around you. Small sized races have VERY good saved replays!!! -- Terry L. What's going on is that in multiplayer, you don't have information on the full field, just the cars which are nearby, so the replay also has limited information. You should have a pretty accurate replay for those cars which are close to yours, but for large field races, you'll see a lot of jumping around unless you keep focused on your own car. I've never used Hawaii, but wouldn't it be possible for Papyrus to store entire replays for each race on their server for a period of, say, a week after each race? People could then download entire replays via modem, or selectively watch replays direct from the server. This would get around the problem of cars "jumping", as I presume that the server stores position vectors for the whole field. As Hawaii progresses and serious racing series arise on it, I'm sure many people would be interested in watching replays of important or particularly exciting races, even if they didn't compete in them themselves. It is a little annoying to be watching a replay and have the car disappear on one frame, you advance a frame and then step through the cars to find it again. It would be nice if the replay engine would remember which car you were focused on and return to that car. Dave "davids" Sparks Sequoia Motorsports
