If you didn't get on the system yesterday, there's some exciting news. NASCAR has sanctioned a new divison for Papyrus MP NASCAR. The press release was a little short on details, but perhaps the Papyrus guys will be able to tell us more soon. Dave "davids" Sparks Sequoia Motorsports

It's true... NASCAR has sanctioned Papyrus/Sierra as the 13th NASCAR division - the NASCAR Racing League. Based on NASCAR Racing 2 -- coming out this Christmas, fans will be able to participate in fully sanctioned NASCAR events online. Hawaii is a prototype for NRL... it will not become NRL, however. The purpose of Hawaii is to get as much feedback as possible from the fans so we can make NRL the ultimate experience. Top priorities: playability issues in NCR 1.x online so we can make NCR 2/NRL awesome online; skill levels; point systems (coming soon to a Hawaii system near you); and a bunch of other things that we still can't talk about! :-) What will NRL have & what won't it have? Well, like I said, Hawaii is a prototype for NRL. The things you find on Hawaii will make their way into NRL... plus A LOT more. I'm sure the number 1 question is -- ya, like local access numbers, Ed??? That's what we intend to do. We're still not ready to announce everything yet, though. You'll still find pickup races & user created series in NRL, but you'll also find fully sanctioned NASCAR Racing League series -- officiated & sanctioned by NASCAR/NRL. Instead of core dumping here, I encourage everyone to take a look at the press release (available on the NASCAR Online site (www.nascar.com) and the Sierra site (www.sierra.com). For obvious reasons, things are getting a lot busier on this end of the wire, so my time on r.a.s. to answer questions might be limited, but I'll do my best. Finally, I know it's been suggested up here a number of times, and now might be the time for a new newsgroup to cover Hawaii & NRL. This is something that we (Papyrus/Sierra) can not do ourselves nor officially support, but I think the volume of postings might justify a new group. I leave it up to someone(s) out there to make the call. -- Ed Martin Papyrus Design Group

It should IMHO be a subgroup of this, such as rec.autos.simulators.multiplayer(.nrl) $0.02, and it's all yours for free.

Top priorities: playability issues in NCR 1.x Ed, Please don't forget the stand-alone play. The AI needs work for the computer cars. On-line is nice but not available all the time. Thanks, Jeff Haas
>Good nesw about NASCAR sanctioning snipped > Ed, Now that we have official NASCAR sanctioning and it is my understanding that Sierra's exclusive rights to the Daytona Track for the Daytona 500 game expire next year, does this mean we may see the Daytona track in both NASCAR 2 and Daytona 500? --- Frank ---

Realizing I must have be drunk or something yes, Sega owns Daytona 500. So now that I have that ouot of the way ... I understand that this is the last year of the licensing agreement between Sega and NASCAR. Have there been any signs that NASCAR would transfer this license over to Sierra for the new online league that THEY are sanctioning? --- Frank ---

That mark is owned by International Speedway Corp., not NASCAR. Obviously, we would be interested in trying to get Daytona into our products, but it is up to ISC & Sega at this point as to whether the exclusive licensing agreement will be extended. You must mean Daytona USA, right? The Daytona 500 is owned by Nascar.

No, the Daytona track is owned by ISC. Because ISC own it they can issue licensing rights to companies that want to use facimiles of the track, logo etc., on towels, in simulators, whatever. Daytona USA is not owned by NASCAR. It is the name of the Sega racing game. ISC sold Sega licensing rights to the Daytona name and track so that Sega could use both in their racing game. I think the confusion here is that ISC and NASCAR are both owned by Bill France. They are 2 separate entities however. --- Frank ---

Considering that Bill France owns both ISC and NASCAR I think we have a pretty good chance to get the licensing rights to Daytona, if we plead our case. IMHO NASCAR has more to gain with MP than they will with Sega machines sitting in the mall. If you need someone to go to Daytona with you to plead to Bill let me know. I'll be happy to go. Heck, Bill and I share the same birthday! <VBG> By the way Ed, what does NADCAR stand for? I've read all the press releases but don't remember seeing that term before. Then again, I do have a bad memory. <G> --- Frank ---

We're trying, but an agreement is an agreement. NASCAR & ISC are very honest & loyal. If Sega owns the license, then there is nothing that can be done. BTW, that is a 2-way street. I'm sure Sega enjoys their relationships with NASCAR/ISC as much as we do. They are really GREAT people. Sure, it would be great to have Daytona in our game, but all in all, it's better to be dealing with someone as upfront as NASCAR/ISC in the long term than it is to scam a single track in the short term. As for "NADCAR" that stood for "Ed didn't proof-read that note before he hit the send button". It's a rather obscure acronym. :-) As you can see, I fixed it. I'm not saying that Papy should attempt a scam or something. What I am saying is that when Sega's license comes up for renewal that ISC should consider a non-exclusive arrangement with Sega thereby allowing Papy to obtain a license also. There really is no reason for Sega to have an exclusive license to the track considering they apply it to an arcade game and Papy applies it to a PC simulator. Two different arenas - 2 different licenses. That makes sense to me. --- Frank ---
