Talladega good setup?

16 posts by 11 people · 15 May 1996 - 19 May 1996

With all this interest in Hawaii on r.a.simuators I thought I'd have another go at NASCAR which, to be honest, I never got on with and preferred Indycar. I tweaked the basic setup, and I've managed to achieve laps of 196 mph, max speed of around 204 when low on fuel. This setup beats all the computer cars, even when on 110% opponents. Have I lucked into a good setup or are the computer cars really that crap? Also, has anyone managed a setup that'll let you go though the start/finish line, without decelerating, turn without chewing up your tyres? - Richard Mundell

Richard, You certainly seem to have lucked out. I have been working on mine and still By the way my setup does not scrape the tires in the tri-oval. However I'd gladly do that to get more speed. Thanks...........................................................Dan

Sounds to me like you don't have the track pak, which includes an update to the sim that lowers the lap speed at 'dega. After you get the track pak, let us know how fast you are. I'm willing to bet that you'll be lucky to scrape out a 193mph lap speed. /===================================================\

With a good drafting partner (like the lead draft on Hawaii) I can turn regular 197's with a top lap of 197.7xx or so. I think I've topped out at 206 on the back stretch just prior to the entry into turn 3. -- Emory University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Nascar Setups Page: http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~ebusch/ Hawaii Network UserName: Buschwick (6)
That setup sounds incredible and could really run fast on Hawaii. I have a setup that runs through the tri-oval without skidding or lifting but Im usually only entering it around 190-192. My best laps are usually in the 194.5 range. What did you do to get that much speed? Also, what cars and tires are you using? Email me the setup if you care to share it. Thanks, M Roberts.

I have been working on mine and still I seem to remember back in 94 when I started using the game, that I was getting these kind of times at Talladega. I then upgraded to the patch last year (was it 1.2?) and suddenly my times at Talladega with the same setups was about 3-4 MPH slower!! Has anybody else noticed this too, and could it be that Richard is using the original version of Nascar? I've seen other people screaming at me, "Hey 193 MPH sucks! I can get 197 MPH!" Well, shoot, so did I 'til I loaded the patch. What gives? Rob Ryder

Before the patches, 200 mph plus speeds were obtainable. The speeds have indeed dropped 3-4 mph, but high 197s and even low 198s are still possible with a good drafting partner. On Hawaii, I have often run numerous 197 plus laps when running in the lead draft, with a top of 197.7. When solo on the track, it should be possible to run high 195s and low 196s with low fuel. It seems to me that the biggest thing at Talladega is the line you take more so than the setup you are using. -- Emory University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Nascar Setups Page: http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~ebusch/ Hawaii Network UserName: Buschwick (6)

Not to sound condescending, but if you are using version 1.1 of Nascar, you should easily be able go much faster. With that version, 200 mph laps are obtainable. My suggestion is to change your line to minimize any speed loss in the turns. The slowest speeds you should be getting in the turns should be about: Turns 1-2 187 , Turns 3-4 191 , and crossing S/F Line at 191. -- Emory University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Nascar Setups Page: http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~ebusch/ Hawaii Network UserName: Buschwick (6)

I don't have the track pack and I am unable to acheive average speeds over 192.5. I even am using a setup sent to me be one of you guys and have since tweaked it to get more MPH out of it. Dominic Tuso Vancouver, Washington, USA

NOT having the NASCAR Track Pack doesn't mean one is using NASCAR Racing v1.1. When I bought my copy of NASCAR Racing, it was already at v1.21 (CD-ROM SVGA version) Later, when I bought the Track Pack, the version it had was v1.20 - I just installed the Track Pack manually as I didn't want to downgrade to a lower version. -- -Jim

I'm not saying that. If you had noticed, this thread was started in response to someone who possibly had version 1.1 from the original CD ROM. I would say that most of us in this group who race Nascar still have the original version 1.1 on CD or Disk, which got upgraded to 1.2 when we purchased the Track Pack. We then downloaded the patch and have upgraded to 1.21. -- Emory University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Nascar Setups Page: http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~ebusch/ Hawaii Network UserName: Buschwick (6)
Simple, the patch added restrictors plates wich slows the car down. Just like in real Nascar.

Even in Papyrus' initial release of NASCAR Racing version 1.1 the restrictor plates were present. The change in version 1.2 represented a resurfacing of the track so to speak, which accounted for the slower speeds. -- Emory University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Nascar Setups Page: http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~ebusch/ Hawaii Network UserName: Buschwick (6)
