A sad day indeed in the RAS world.

I've been frequenting RAS for over six years and never in my wildest fantasies would I have thought that the day would arrive when the most talked-about and anticipated simulation would be that relating to rallying. Is this what the world of motor-racing sims has sunk to? Is there such a dearth of quality racing-simulation programs either out or being developed (forgetting West's Greatest Con Of All Time) that the denizens of RAS have nothing better to drool over than a bloody *rally* game?!!! As Sylvester's little son would say as he hangs his oversized head..."Oh, the shame!" Bruce

You're not going to get off that easy, Bruce. Please enlighten us. What's so wrong with rallying? I would have thought being from Australia (where rally driving is fairly popular) and also being a fairly historic form of motorsport that you would enjoy it. Are the Japanese cars not traditional enough for you?
I love it.. it's a sad day because a good rally game finally came out!! Why wasn't any of the days BEFORE the release of RBR one of the sad days? I guess I could get into a whole thing about what makes a certain kind of racing more important than the other, but that whole arguement is too obvious. I think that the reason RBR has gotten so much attention is that its physics model and level of realism are the likes of which we haven't seen since GPL. Hopefully when GTR comes out it will be just as good in the realism area -- I hope it is because rallying isn't my favorite type of racing but it is definitely a challenge. You have to get used to concentrating on finesse, steering/throttle balance, turning before you actually reach the corner, etc. in order to get a good time rather than all-out speed. It's a very different type of racing and I am enjoying it very much. -- __________________________________ Todd Walker __________________________________
Totally tongue-in-cheek, Steve. Nothing wrong with rallying at all.....it's just that it's the first time that a rallying program has received so much attention here in RAS. The reason can only be that there's no other racing sim worth discussing! :) Bruce. Whenever an available (meaning it can be purchased or downloaded) sim is discussed in length and in depth here on RAS, for me it's a sure sign of top notch quality, even if some people (like myself) have problems getting their exotic controllers to work with it at first. Also, with GTR and LFS on the horizon, I think simracing hasn't been in such a good shape for a long long time. Don't forget rFactor Uwe. It's by ISI, and GTR uses the rFactor game engine (probably not the complete game engine actually). I think GTR will be excellent, but the problem with it for me is it's just one series, while rFactor can be anything. By far, my favorite sim car to drive is the modern F1 cars. The faster it is, the better. The GTR cars will bore me after awhile. With rFactor, I'll eventually have the ultimate modern F1 sim, and many other series which while sloooooow and sloppy (compared to the F1 cars), will give me more variety and seat time than GTR. -- David G Fisher

Well Bruce, the group's called rec.autos.simulators and, as I understand it, RBR fits that description. Haven't got it yet myself, but from all the discussions here, I surely will very soon. Not sure if my system will be able to cope though and that's what's delayed me. Have seen it advertised for the PC at play.com in the UK for just £19.99, which includes postage, so no other reason not to buy it. Anyway, don't worry to much. I'm sure there are a few 'proper' sims just around the corner (pun very much intended :).

I think GTR will be I've seen it mentioned here a couple of times, but thought of it as some obscure xbox title. Thanks for the heads up, Dave, I'll check it out once a demo is available. Here's the web site. http://www.rfactor.net/ -- David G Fisher
> Here's the web site. http://www.rfactor.net/ Sounds like a fantastic physics/graphics (and dare I say it multiplayer) engine for modders, but I find it hard to get excited about fantasy cars. I'm sure there'll be some good mods but I can't see them stacking up to the likes of GTR where they have such excellent access to all of the technical data. That's the problem with simulating F1 too - it's virtually impossible to get your hands on really good data for the cars.

Sims appear with time. Developpers release games. Sometimes they are related to open-wheels, other times to stock-cars, or endurance-based racing. This time, it's simply Rally Racing. It's natural Bruce, I don't see any problem here? <reads the other posts in this thread> Darnit you old fart! ;-D Anyway, RC2000 had lots of talk back in the days. DGF was always quite defensive over the accuracy of the physics. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- This announcement is brought to you by the Shimago-Dominguez Corporation - helping America into the New World...

N2003 had access to loads of data from NASCAR, but the performance of the cars on track is absolutely not what I see on television. Even if the data is 100% accurate, sims need to be intentionally fudged a bit in order to get realistic performance. It makes some guys here feel better to think they are driving a sim with 100% accurate data plugged into the game engine, but I've yet to see a sim where it then translated to a 100% accurate simulation experience for the simmer. The track surfaces and weather would also have to be modeled perfectly. Most importantly, too much real world feedback is missing to just rely on accurate data to give you a realistic overall driving experience. They are all approximations. :-) -- David G Fisher

Bruce. The following message is posted on belalf of those newer posters to whom your acidic wit is new territory. They need to be educated in traditional comebacks so... Get Stuffed ;-) MS Good to see you still in the land of the living old timer.
