GARY CAR 28 Apr 1996#317154
This letter is to Ed Martin or anyone else at Papyrus. I probably speak on behalf of almost all of the owners of NASCAR Racing when I say that the Talladega Superspeedway needs to be re-designed. After watching the NASCAR race today, I have found that there are some BIG differences between the REAL track and the track in the game. The Tri-oval on the front stretch does not even come close to what it is in real life. It is almost impossible to go through it two wide without lifting off the gas or hitting the wall. In the race today, they were able to go through the tri-oval four and sometimes five wide without cracking the throttle. The tri-oval should be widened and also increased in length. Another difference on the front stretch is the pit road. In REAL life it's straight. In the game it's curved. The turns seem to be banked too high and turned too sharply. There is also a BIG difference in the transitions from the straights to the turns. On the real track there is a very smooth entrance into the turns and a smooth exit from the turns. In the game the turns seem to pop up all of the sudden. Another thing is the speed of the cars in the turns. In the game when two cars are side-by-side, the car on the bottom side has a faster speed than the car on top. It should be the other way around. On the real track, the car on the top side has a faster speed than the car on the bottom because the bottom car must turn more and bind the car up. The two cars stay side-by-side because the top car has a longer distance to travel. On the real track three cars can go into a turn side-by-side and come out of the same turn still side-by-side. After being on Multiplayer for one night, I have found that everybody likes to run right next to the grass in the turns. Thats right, at the very bottom of the apron at full speed. Although this is the fastest way to get around the track in the game, in real life it is far off from being possible as #28 showed in the race today when he was three wide going into turn three; he had to slow down and pull behind the two cars to his right so he wouldn't end up on the apron, spin out, and take out half of the field. When my Multiplayer race began, I drove through the turns with the left side of my car next to the white line like you are supposed to drive. Everyone else would swerve left and try to stay at the very bottom of the track, some would even go into the grass. I got left behind. This problem needs to be fixed by flattening the apron of the track right next to the white line so you would probably wreck if you tried to drive your whole car under the line. This is even more of a problem in turns three and four. I thank you for any replys on this subject and I would be even more thankful for a fix for this track. Josh Carr-IVGA Go #3!!!!!!!!!

I completely concur with the prior post. The cars in the simulation seem to take up a lot of room in the game track where they are dwarfed on the real track.

I must also concur the sim track is to narrow in the tri oval and also the apron should be flattened out. I also have another complaint the computer cars only stay single file on the back straight and do not go 2 or even 3 wide anywhere on the track. We need some type of patch. Hint hint !!! to the pits or anyone who knows how to change the AI actions on track

After watching the NASCAR race >today, I have found that there are some BIG differences between the REAL track and the >track in the game. I've been pushing for this ever since the sim was released. Let's make some noise about this! I don't know that it needs to be widened, but the radius is too tight. The tri-oval at Talladega has a much more gradual curvature. The Daytona tri-oval is a sharper turn than Talladega, but even it is not as sharp as the one in the sim! About the pit road--it's my understanding that this cannot be changed because of design limitations. I wish it could be changed, because I don't like curved pit roads, especially the one at C***te. You're right on target here, except maybe for the comment about running up high on the track. Papyrus DOES have it wrong, but, running up high doesn't necessarily speed up your car. It does free the engine up, but it's the long way around the track, and won't give you good lap times. Case and point--during qualifying, the cars will go out and run as close to the wall as they can on the warmup lap. This frees the engine up, allowing it to get up to speed faster, plus, they're taking the long way around the track, which gives them more time to get the engine up to speed. On the qualifying laps, they run with the car right down on the bottom. Absolutely. There is a whole lane under the white line, and this isn't correct. It should be flat, or at least banked less than the track itself. Some great points. Hope Papyrus is listening. Pat, Believe me Papyrus knows, we've been telling them for months :) Just have some patience....Yeah, that's me talking, the guy with absolutely no patience <G> (except on the track :) -- http://www.cris.com/~bms/index.htm Closed Beta Tester Hawaii Network - bsimpson online "It's Always Darkest before it goes totally Black"
I think you guys are exactly right. All of us have complained about the problems that there are with Talladega, especially the tri-oval. I think Papyrus should really look into this change because several recent occurrences at Papy could truly benefit from the change. First of all, now that the multiplayer network is out realism is a must. This is most important at a track like Dega. With 30 guys and gals out there without the convenience of AI that moves out of your way when you***up we need a track that allows us to race 2 and 3 wide like the real track allows for. The second reason and probably even more important is the whole Daytona deal. If I were the Daytona people, yes I would want my track in the best Nascar sim on the market. But, what if I look at tracks like Talladega or C***te that are far from realistic? I don't think I would want my track put out there on the market if it is not realistically simulated. Come on guys. How long would it really take to switch the design of the tri-oval? The benefits would far outweigh the the negatives of making the change. If I know Papy is willing to take some time to make, what is arguably, the most popular track in the sim right then I'm going to be much more inclined to purchase Daytona or other add-ons when and IF they are produced. Gary, I saw the real Tallagega for the first time today too, and I agree. I love Nascar and the Talladega track, but I'd like to drive on a more realistic one (actually I believe this is one of the prime motivations behind the "Daytona"-Talladega-mod Jed at the pits is working on). One things that I did notice is that accidents in Nascar (the simulation) are very well done - the way they somtimes come up so fast you can't get out of the way is very realistic. Joe
