Hawaii crashes and Papyrus's 'no Windows 95' stance
A user reported crashes in the Hawaii multiplayer client while running it under Windows. Ed Martin of Papyrus replied in capitals that the beta did not support Windows 95 and must be run in DOS. Some posters criticised his tone and others defended him, and the thread also discussed letting drivers pick permanent car numbers, which Martin said involved technical and licensing issues.

Hmm, try using it in dos as you should. I've never had one problem
with the system itself. Had a few minor problems with some features,
and have let their tech people know.
Run it from DOS as it should, and not WINDOWS. This should fix your
problem if you wish to continue with Hawaii.

Nascar is not a windows game. If you look at the files you got with your
Hawaii software, you will find this very nice user guide. You may want to read it,
before posting anymore "bugs".

Yes, I am yelling...
WE DO NOT SUPPORT WINDOWS 95 IN THIS BETA RELEASE. PERIOD.
Some people might be able to get it to work, but plain & simple, NASCAR
Racing 1.x came out before Win 95, it was never intended to run with Win
95, we do not support the standlone game in Win 95 and we do not support
multiplayer under Win 95.
This is clearly spelled out in the User's Guide.

It appears that you would be the "major bug." =) Here's a
sample from the first page of Hawaii's readme.txt....you might want to
start troubleshooting there:
**** Windows 95 ****
We do not support Windows 95 at this time. If you are a Windows 95
user, you should run multiplayer and/or NASCAR Racing in MS-DOS
exclusive mode.

Hawaii isn't perfect, but until you read the Guide, save your posts:
"We do not support Windows 95 at this time. If you are a Windows 95 user, you
should run multiplayer and/or NASCAR Racing in MS-DOS exclusive mode."
Sean
It is in 'beta' remember that ... report any such incidents to Papyrus as
explained in the hawaii.doc you got as part of the hawaii.exe. Papy has a ton
of new 'programming challanges' to work out here now that there are so many
people up online.

Mr. Martin is just being honest. User's Guide is just that - a guide
for the user. Those who ask a zillion questions without first
checking the guide they are bound to be found on the high end of the
universial moronic scale.
Don't be so uptight, rock some instead!

John, there is a way. Before (or while) the sim is loading, hold
down the gas for example. This brings it out of the calibrated center
and the computer thinks it needs to be recalibrated. Happened to me
once when I was playin' with my pedals before the game was loaded.

How about allowing users to assign a permanent car in her files? First

We're looking at a lot of ways to allow users to get preferred cars.
It's going to be a little while though. The issues are both technical &
legal. We're dealing with a lot of licensed properties, and even though
the multicar car set is artificial, people are going to want to exchange
cars... some of them real. We're working on it!

Let me get this straight. Some moron is too lazy to read
the readme.txt, but decides to come in here ranting about "major" bugs
instead. Ed Martin, understandably exasperated, politely but firmly
corrects the error, and he's the bad guy? No wonder there aren't more
company reps on-line. Sheesh......Ed was a lot more composed than I
would have been. =)

One other thing that could be easy, is to be able to start your engine before you
race, just allow the user to program a button, either on the keyboard or joystick
to start the engine after a voice over sends the command, maybe nit pickin here, but I
think it would be cool, quiet until the command is given, then you hear em fire up!
Thanks Papyrus for bringing Nascar to the "rest" of us, keep up the great work!

Todd

Good idea, but I think you just might be underestimating a bit the
amount of work involved to implement something like that. <G>

No, I happen to be a software engineer. I know exactly what kind of code that Papyrus is
using to implement the assignment of cars. The function that is called to produce a random
number between 1 and 32 could be replaced by a subroutine that gets a number between 1 and 32
from the driver. It checks to makes sure noone else is using it. If noone is then it assigns
that number to that driver. This doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is driving different
cars. It is possible for everyone to drive the same car. You say how? Well, if everyone has
a different car set where, say Terry Labontes car has been moved to occupy different spots in
each car set, then a random selection could find Terry Labontes car several times. If each
driver were asked what car they were driving and if there were more than 1 #5 Kelloggs car on
the track, the answers could include more than 1 #5 for the first question, but the answer to
the second question would never be 'yes'.
In a series, everyone should be using the same car set. Thus no two drivers would be driving
the same car. I'm not sure about the legalities of trading carsets. It is done every day of
the week. Noone denies it. Heck, Tony Johns makes quite an effort at making sure the world
has the latest paintjobs for more than 1 NASCAR Series. He does a great job of it and I don't
think anyone has suggested that he has broken any laws. Noone is making any money off of this
except Papyrus and the LD companies, but they aren't making any money from the trading and
distribution of carsets. Besides, the simulator doesn't even know what the actual paintjobs
look like. Only the local user does.
Papyrus has mentioned that they are working on this aspect of the project for use with series
racing.

Wow. Mike, let's hire him!
The idea is of course, good... and has been requested for some time. I'm sorry,
but I just have to respond to your "it could be implemented in 5 minutes".
How do you know this? You are familiar with Papy's schedule, code, process, and
implementation details? Sorry.. I hate to nit, but I just find this kind of
comment, well.. badgering and uninformed. As if thier lack of responding to you
is an admittance of incompetence. Pleeeaaasssse.

I agree that you are doing your best to support your product. I don't
think that that was ever in question. 3 posts on this thread in the last
day supports that.
People aren't necesarily asking you how to do it. This is a public
newsgroup and people can ask what they want.
Anyone who reads deep enough to see that someone is having problems
running under win95 will also see that it is not supported. That is fine.
But if someone does get it to work and lends advise... I don't see that
hurting you in the long run. Maybe a little customer service orientation
is in order... especially that part about "belittling the customer". When
someone else replies to a thread, they are just "joe shmoe" and are to be
taken as such. When a representative of Papyrus replies, he should be
acting as a representative of the company.
