I'd like to know how fast games like ICR2 run on a Pentium 166. I don't
want to invest in a new computer at least until it can run a game like
ICR2 or GP2 with full detail, hi-res graphics running at a smooth
(15+ fps) frame rate.
If you are using a P166, what are these games like at hi-res, full
detail? What do you think the framerate is? Are you completely
satisfied with it's performance?
Thanks, Casey Hudson
Pentium 166 frame rates in ICR2 and NASCAR
A prospective buyer asked how ICR2 and GP2 would run on a Pentium 166. Owners reported about 28–30 fps in SVGA with full detail, especially with cards like the Matrox Millennium, and there was some discussion of the Cyrix 6x86. Rick Genter clarified that NASCAR Racing and IndyCar Racing II are fully 32-bit applications.

I don't know the answer, but I saw an interesting post on this subject
on Compuserve today:
==================================================
Marc,
>...Intel in a way has lucked out, though until now it has probably been holding its breath waiting for the other shoe to drop...<
It just dropped, and it's call the Cyrix 6x86. The 133Mhz version
(which Cyrix has dubbed the P166+) is kicking the hell out of the
166Mhz Pentium on all current benchmarks (see the latest issue of PC
Magazine for more details).
I just picked up one yesterday (the P166+ model), and it's the
fastest damn thing I've ever worked with. Out of order execution,
superpiplining, superscalar/speculative execution - it's more like a
P6 in P5 clothing, but without the 16-bit performance hit of the
Pentium Pro.
Better yet, the 6x86 is completely pin-compatible with existing
Pentium PGA sockets. I've got mine installed in a board designed
specifically for genuine Intel CPUs (all the way up to the as yet
unreleased P5/180), and yet here I am flying along at speeds faster
than anything Intel can offer for this very same board. Truly Amazing!
Imagine what will happen when Cyrix starts to really crank up the
clock speed (note: the P166+ is only running at 133Mhz, even though it
delivers better-than-P5/166 performance - hence the P166+ moniker).
Intel *should* be concerned...

I use a P90 with 2 Mb DRAM Diamond Stealth and have to turn off most
detail in NASCAR Racing but can have all detail on for ICR2.
Used a friend's P166 with 4 Mb Video Card and with NASCAR Racing could
have all the details on, including asphalt. WAAAAAA. Sob Sob.
I would buy one if I had the money.
Cheers,
Craig.

I have a P166-16mb-Matrox Millenium with Thrustmaster T1. Indycar 2
runs full detail svga at 28fps with 28 cars. Nascar 32 cars, SVGA,
all detail except grass texture at 28fps. Need For Speed-perfect!
Enjoy it!

I have this issue of PC Magazine in which you refer. I agree the Cyrix
chip did real well overall, better the fastest P166 in most tests. But
the P166's look like they do better on the CPUmark-16 test. My
understanding of these tests is that the CPUmark-16 test is the most
applicable to computer games including auto racing simulators.
What do you think?
Also, how expsensive is the Cyrix chip versus a P166?

I don''t know about that - Intel's P166 doesn't do a thing for 16-bit
code - it's no faster than a P133. The Cyrix chip apparently doesn't
have the same limitation. I would imagine that most games would be
16-bit so as to be as highly optimized as possible, but I could be
wrong about that.

Both NASCAR Racing and IndyCar Racing II are full 32-bit applications.
Most games that use the DOS/4GW 32-bit DOS extender are full 32-bit
applications as well.

Thanks for the correction, Rick. That's good to know, that means they
should really rock on the P166 (and up).

Not exactly.. p44 of April 23 Pc Mag shows following:
SAG STF 166 (Pentium 166) CPUMark32 - 339
Sys Perf C166+ (Cyrix 166+) CPUMark32 - 305
Average Pentium 166 CPUMark32 - 309

But what are the settings on the graphics? SVGA? Each graphic item set to ON
or AUTO? Someone posted earlier that at MIS they got only 25-26 frames/second
using a certain methodology. I don't see how a P166 colud beat their system:
a P6-200 w/Matrox MGA.
Personally, I ran the test on my system and found I could get 19-20
frames/second. I have a P-166, Matrox MGA Millenium (4MB), 64MB main memory.
I've benchmarked my system a system benchmark web site and found that my
graphics are extremely fast. I don't see how EDO memory could make an 11
frame/second difference.
